Apple Safari to be released for the Windows Platform!

Recommended Posts

Wow, I'm very unimpressed. My complaints:

1. The window behavior isn't correct. Minimizing the window then restoring it should return it to the maximized state I had it at before minimizing. Instead, it opens to a non maximized size.

2. Fonts look butchered on a lot of sites, including mine. Look at the screenshot comparison:

3. Overall, it feels sluggish like Quicktime always was.

They are. Like that other dude said, they're releasing Safari for Windows so that more people can develop widget/apps for iPhone (hardware). So, yeah, they're sneakily supporting iPhone through Safari for Winders.

No, they arnt. Jobs recently said they are a software company. Its not the hardware that matters anymore. Its the software thats ON the hardware.

Apple is a hardware company

Microsoft sells primarily software.

Apple sells primarily hardware.

Two very different business models.

Apple only produces software like OS X, iLife, iWorks, etc., to promote sales of Macs. They have no interest in allowing OS X to run on other hardware.

Apple produces iTunes to promote sales of iPods. That's the only reason they make it available (free) for PCs.

First of all, you guys need to shut the hell up with your "im not impressed" comments because just saying that is incredibly stupid.

It's a browser ported from Mac to Windows! What did you expect its first incarnation to be like? It's not going to bring people from Firefox this week, this month, and likely not this year.

Think of it as when Firefox was called Phoenix. (and subsequently Firebird) Lots of people were "unimpressed" with the 0.6 version when it was stable enough for public release, and now what? You have it right on your desktops, extremely happy and loyal to a fault, because it improved drastically with time and dedication.

By this time next year, most of these issues will go away, and we'll have another good browser to choose from, and thats what's important: a full range of options which help satisfy more segments of the browsing public.

We're not supposed to comment on a piece of software? I'm not impressed and I'm more than comfortable and within my right to say so. The font rendering completely butchers the font on a lot of sites, including my own and the application itself doesn't adhere to standard window behaviors within Windows.

Watch his like 2 week old interview with Bill gates, he states that Apple is a software company.

Steve Jobs - May 30, 2007: And so the big secret about Apple, of course?not-so-big secret maybe?is that Apple views itself as a software company and there aren?t very many software companies left, and Microsoft is a software company.

I don't think I would call the fonts "butchered", they are just rendered differently. As I am typing this, the font looks pretty awesome. Although I enjoy this browser and like what they are trying to do, this will not become my default browser, I mean heck, it's using 330mb of ram! I just hope that all the bugs are fixed by the time it is released...it feels like I am scrolling through iTunes, slow!

Faster than IE is a bold claim. One I'd like to see the evidence for. It ran like crap on my machine, just like iTunes does. The pages didn't finish loading and the fonts were fugly. Still, at least now I can test my websites in Safari easier. :p

I'm surprised that a mod and web dev like yourself doesn't seem to realize that there's a lot of work to be done to port a browser from one OS to another. I'm not saying you're not supposed to comment, as thats what I made this thread for, but even you have to admit that "not being impressed" with a browser's first incarnation on a completely new platform is just silly. I mean, what did you expect? For it to be spectacularly quick, act just like a Windows browser, and render at an acceptable level for you considering the circumstances? A lot of people here are sounding like noobs here, including you, with these silly comments. I mean, from your post count, I can tell you aren't a novice here, so why make such a noobish statement? Leave your "im not impressed" for when this app has a fighting chance, not when its barely out of the womb. :|

    • No thanks! WebView trash is unacceptable. I only use software that's native.
    • The way the human race is going it will die out long before then and it will be the human race fault. They will either die out due to a nuclear war or climate change will kill them off. I say Nuclear war myself and I don't think it will be that long before it happens
