Forthcoming changes on Bans & Moderations

Recommended Posts

Honestly, I found the best way to not be concerned about the Mods or the warning/ban system is to just keep your opinions to yourself for the most part. Well, OK, I fail at that with my 20% warning level. But, I'm due for a reduction sooner than later. :)

Members who have increased from a 0% to 20% warn since the time this thread started should not get the automatic 20% reduction that will occur just before this new system comes into effect. It could encourage members with no warn to break the rules while they can, knowing that they will go back down to 0% warn very shortly.

Just a thought....

I really cannot believe the amount of retaliation that this thread has created, I believe these new additions and changes are rather positive for the community. The fact that when you have 40% it would show publicly is a good way to keep people in their right minds before posting ridiculously stupid posts or insulting posts, and that is why Neobond said that they will be reducing everyone's levels by 20% so that everyone is in the clear and if they do happen to do something stupid again then that is their fault.

While I do believe this system is great, I think sometimes we should be able to argue whether the warning was called for. If we do not feel that the staff member who issued it is reasonable then we should be able to take it up to the next level of staff.

Keep it up staff ;)!

A system for this does already exist as has been said in this thread before.

In the first instance, POLITELY take it up with the moderator who issued the warn and try and put your point across. If this doesn't get you anywhere, you can take it up with a Supervisor or Administrator who will have the final say on the matter.

I stress the word politely here because you'd not believe the number of PM's that fly around along the lines of "**** you dude, I didn't deserve that. You talk **** and you don't ******* know what you're ******* doing you piece of ****". PM's like that are NOT going to get the response that people want ;)

I'm a little bit of a latecomer to this thread but I do have a few questions/statements that could possibly be answered/acknowledged by posters here.

1) I never realized there were any other communities like Neowin on the internet. It seems to be the only real tech forum I know that isn't specifically questions and answers versus a big group of pals and not-so-pals.

2)I do believe people can/are/will be embarassed by their warning levels because I know I would care. I care what I post and what people say to it, just like in the real world, because really I believe this is just another segment of the real world.

3)I'm not much of a poster but when something intrigues me or I have a question OR I have an answer I do post, I try to keep my ego out of it but how come for a place where people supposedly shouldn't care what other people say, posters still decide to be less than congenial to each other? If people didn't really care then all you would have would be straight support rather than an actual community

4)What ARE the restricted status' and what are the differences between GMods, FMods, supervisors, etc?

5)Is there going to be a buffet table if we stick around?

First sorry so long to reply, life events.

Ha, you'd end up with all the mods chums and who they agree with on gold stars ;-)

I registered in 2005, and only being warned in the last 3 months, due to having enough of people who come into a news story just to cause trouble, they have no interest in the topic so why be there?

And its always the same people, do they get warned or banned? No.

As you just said that goes on already. So it's a non issue as far as my suggestion goes. I doubt it would make it worse.

Good behaviour comes as standard :p

Your reward is your posting rights :shiftyninja:

I understand what you're getting at, but I don't really think it's necessary?

Infact the MVC award fits this category (people who have behaved and contributed well over a time period) anyway IMO (Y)

After thinking more about it.. you are right it is unnecessary but not because of the MVC award. It's just not really necessary.

The fact that when you have 40% it would show publicly is a good way to keep people in their right minds before posting ridiculously stupid posts or insulting posts...

I disagree. We currently have our warning levels next to our posts as it is and some people don't heed them. Its not going to make a difference if someone else knows either IMO. If anything this move will get people unfairly judged. There will be a time where someone with a very high warning will post something and someone will go "I think ill take the advice of someone who isn't 60% warned thank you :)". Currently when someone posts the only thing which seems to effect "matters" is their post count. I've seen it in threads where someone with 2/3 posts has had their opinion discounted. But someone with 10k+? Pay attention.

My opinion is, if anything, the post count should be removed and the warns stay hidden. But yea, that's my E-Pinion. ;)

And those who do that are being silly and only "hurting" their experience.

If someone offers me sound advice and has 80% warning, I won't care, the warnings could be for anything daft like losing their temper once or twice/ect, but that doesn't mean they can't tell me how to install program y, or tweak product x.

Those who run around senselessly judging are going to do that anyway in life, so let them be close minded and who cares really cares? Their loss if they miss out on good advice that would help them because of their "over the top" judgemental attitude.

With this system you can check why members were warned I guess. So even if you had doubts about their advice, you check their warns and if it's something like "supplied newbie with incorrect advice that led to newbies PC blowing up and house burning down", then yeah maybe think again about trusting the 80% warned user on their advice with building your PC :p

My warn is currently 60% and I was even banned once...do my posts mean less now that i just told everyone?

If anyone disregards advice or answers on the basis of someones warn level then they are being stupid. The person didn't get the warnings for giving out wrong information or bad advice.

5)Is there going to be a buffet table if we stick around?

1. Other forums tend to be more of a private club than a true community. That is why I like Neowin. I didn't know anybody here in real life when I joined as a member or when I became staff.

2. Some will be embarrassed but not everyone.

3. Different personalities is what makes this a community. A collection of robots would be rather dull.

4. Some people might get restricted from certain forums, some people may not be able to post for several days, some people may not be able to edit their profile, some may not be allowed on the IRC channel. Blue Fmods (or just moderators) and Green Gmods (global moderators) are responsible for moderating either the forums, the front page comments or both. Supervisors are responsible for solving the day-to-day problems that come up. Admins usually concern themselves with coding, advertising or other long-term issues. If you have a problem with a moderator/global moderator then you can take it to a supervisor. If you have a problem with a Supervisor then you can take it to an admin. If you have a problem with an Admin then, well, you've got problems.

5. Rumours are, however, that there will be a cash bar.

Nooooooooo my post count is my world *hugs it* :D

These Admins and Supervisors, do they have day Jobs or is this there job?

We do not get paid. There may be some money found to solve some critical development issues but, for the most part, all Neowin staff are volunteers.

These Admins and Supervisors, do they have day Jobs or is this there job?

I find it amusing how you keep coming back. That weak attempt at wit was delivered with what intent? To make staff members feel awkward or embarrassed? It definitely wasn't to make a point since there's none to be found.

At the end of the day, be a man and own up to your mistakes, that's all. You act like a warning is the end of the world or some great injustice placed upon your already overburdened shoulders. It's not. It simply means you hit submit before fully thinking out your post or you thought it out and decided to act foolishly, anyway.

This is an internet forum and we're simply trying to accommodate discussion that's a sliver better than what you find every where else on the web. If you want what every other site has to offer and hate that Neowin will not allow it, well, you can surely log out of here and have your pick of the litter with the rest of the web. It's really not difficult or heart breaking to either party.

I'm sorry but I think it's funny of how people are reacting.

Its like this, if you have a good post and your warning level is high, you still have a good post. If people are biased with your level, its their problem for being ingorant of neglecting a good post.

If you are so scared of what people will think about you since you have a high warning level, shouldnt you have thought of that when you posted? For dont say something on the boards you wouldnt to a person on the streets. In real life you would get hit and on the boards you get a warning. Use Judgment.

I'm not the type of person that judges an admin, fourm member, or even a one post wonder any different. Just relax guys, they know what they are doing.

One common theme I see people complaining about is the word idiot.

Yes, if you call someone an idiot, you should be warned.

This is a place to help and inform people.

Not everyone knows as much as you do and has a right to ask a silly question.

If someone intentionally causes trouble in a thread or does something wrong, you still shouldn't call them an idiot.

It brings you straight down to thier level.

This place sure has changed since I've joined.

I'm not an "active member" but I do visit and browse the site daily and some of you can be so childish.

Act your age, not your shoe size.

    • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!
