Many PS3 owners complain of Firmware 2.40 freezes

Recommended Posts

FW version shouldn't have anything to do with the game version, so on-line game play should not be affected.

what might become an issue is if people who are still on 2.36 update SSHD for the trophy support... that might break more stuff too

http://www.ps3news.com/PlayStation3/sony-c...magic-who-knew/

a very nice article which actually calms me down when i cant see all the features in ps3 that i wanted.

a quote from that article:

"When it comes to developing firmware updates such as 2.40, the development team at Sony will need to consider how much memory they can allocate to the system software while still leaving enough for video games to use. This is, I’m guessing, why features such as the in-game Xross Media Bar take so long to develop and eventually deploy into the public domain; it’s not as easy as simply mapping the XMB to the PS button mid-game so that players can access all of their PS3’s features in the middle of PixelJunk Monsters, or (as many had hoped) while watching I Am Legend on Blu-Ray. A lot of work will have gone into working out which features would be possible to insert into an in-game version of the PS3’s menu without compromising the game you’re playing and causing it to crash, and without swamping the system’s resources completely.

I believe this is why the features that accompany 2.40’s in-game menu additions are very limited; very much aware of their consumer base’s want for such a feature in their system software, Sony have released the closest thing they can get to a complete in-game menu for the time being with as many features as they could cram in. Although this has meant no in-game XMB while watching movies, no voice chat or video reconfiguration and limited custom soundtrack support, the fans who have begged for the inclusion of this feature should be relatively happy since they’ve finally got what they wanted, right? IIRC one SPE on the cell is devoted 100% of the time to the OS and the XMB.

Nearly forgot, after updating did anyone elses PS3 rebuild the HDD database? mine did and all was fine except some of my groups I'd set up for my games had been removed?

did it do it automatically or you did it manually?

mine did not do such a thing.

No offence, but what's with all the signups with real life names in here (Sony section)

2 people banned in the past 2 days with Jeremy Clarkson, then there was another real life name before it was changed to "Audioboxers Mother".

Sorry but I can't help be suspicious :pinch:

to be honest i saw Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond few days ago. And it was funny as hell. and gave me the idea of choosing a real life name. What else should i choose but not George Bush. Also sorry about Audioboxers mother. I did not see that name but that is not even funny in deed childish.

I came home from university a bit late and enjoying my vacation with sun and ps3. been following this forum for sometime. I learned one or two things about my ps3 so far which i did not know before.

Thanks Neowin.

If you're legit, I truly am sorry.

But two signups in two days with real life names/avatars both banned, and now you're the 3rd in the 3rd day to enter this section with your first string of posts.

I must admit, I did find "Audioboxers Mother" quite amusing, if a little uncalled for. God I am so childish.

Um thanks, maybe if you read the PM that member had sent me prior to changing their name you wouldn't of found it very funny...

my roommate in college uses neowin actually. Though i dont know his exact name since its name and numbers. When i had questions he did not know he would post them here for me and give me the answers. Now as a senior in college, i better do things myself...

though i admit, hammond and clarkson made me want to have a real life name. so funny in my opinion.

is having real life name against the neowin policy? if so how can i change it?

opps these are all off topic... :( sorry.

Sorry, but lol @"Audioboxers Mother" . Who the hell was that anyway?

Looks like many people got banned overnight, I guess things got nasty over here.

---

I still haven't update mine (not that I have a choice now anyway), let's hope for a quick fix.

Well back on topic.....

No problems so far here for me on 2.40. I have just purchased SSHD and downloading now, looking forward to building my Trophy collection and seeing if they get displayed in my HOME SPACE :D

other than the somewhat bizarre HDD database rebuild, no complaints.

Just a thought, I bought my 60GB EU unit in late march/early april last year, it has now past its 1 year warranty period. Should a firmware update fail am I still entitled to a free repair/replacement?

Isn't it 2 years warranty in the UK?

Isn't it 2 years warranty in the UK?

All I know is that by law all electrical products have to be covered for 1 year against failure. I'm interested to see if a mandatory firmware update on anything out of warranty still leaves sony liable?

i read somewhere just 1 hour ago that a customer without warranty called sony told the problem and sony asked 150 US dollars for repair.

But this was before that this mistake became common throughout other people.

also here it says

According to our member boonflop, Sony insisted on charging him, once his PS3 bricked after updating to 2.40. Hopefully Sony they will change their tune after this debacle, and fix these consoles for free.

Um thanks, maybe if you read the PM that member had sent me prior to changing their name you wouldn't of found it very funny...

Seriously? Sorry to hear that. That's pretty low. I think if you've got something to say, then you should stand up and say it in front of everybody.

Thinking you can hide behind a PM is pretty dumb too.

It's crazy how things get so out of hand in here.

On topic: Being charged for a repair relating to this update is totally unacceptable in my book. You broke it, you fix it.

    • TeraCopy 4.0 Build 28 by Razvan Serea TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed, also providing you with a lot of features. Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives. Pause and resume transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click. Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer. Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files. Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual. TeraCopy is free for non-commercial use only. For commercial use you need to buy a license. The paid version of the program includes the following features: Copy/move to your favorite folders. Save reports as HTML and CSV files. Select files with the same extension/folder. Remove the selected files from the copy queue. Features added since version 3.17: Enhanced speed graph. New multi-threaded copy engine. Support for copying to multiple targets. Queue system for managing multiple copy operations. Support for receiving files via the LocalSend protocol. TeraCopy entry in the modern Windows Explorer context menu. Integrated toolbar in the title bar. Why receive LocalSend transfers with TeraCopy? Handle file conflicts: Skip, overwrite, or rename files when a file with the same name already exists. LocalSend always creates another copy, which can waste time and disk space, especially when resuming an interrupted transfer. Filter unwanted files: Apply ignore lists or remove files manually before accepting a transfer, so unnecessary files are not downloaded. Better performance on fast networks: In tests over a 10 Gbps connection, TeraCopy received files several times faster than the standard LocalSend app on Windows. TeraCopy 4.0 Build 28 changelog: Fixed a bug where Overwrite behaved as Overwrite All during same-drive move operations. AdvancedInstaller fixed the installer’s security vulnerability: EXE Bootstrapper resolved the %appdata% location incorrectly for the System account. • New AMD graphics driver fixes install issues and FSR 4.1 crashes on RX 7000 GPUs by Taras Buria AMD is rolling out yet another graphics driver. Version 26.6.4 is now available for download, bringing two important fixes. One is for those still using Windows 10 and having trouble installing driver 26.6.2. In fact, this patch is coming from the recently released hotfix, so it is not new if you are already running version 26.6.3. The second fix is for RX 7000 owners. AMD recently brought FSR 4.1 support to the previous-gen graphics cards, but there was a bug with certain games crashing when using FSR 4.1. I experienced this issue with Forza Horizon 6, so today's driver should take care of that. Here is the official changelog: Intermittent install issue seen when installing AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.6.2 on Windows® 10 systems for Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Intermittent application crash may be observed in some games with AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 enabled on Radeon™ RX 7000 series graphics products. Known issues include the following: Intermittent application crash or driver timeout may be observed while playing Battlefield™ 6 on AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. AMD is actively working on a resolution with the developer to be released as soon as possible. Texture flickering or corruption may appear while playing Battlefield™ 6 with AMD Record and Stream on some AMD graphics products. AMD FSR Upscaling and AMD FSR Frame Generation may show as inactive in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition while playing Battlefield™ 6 when enabled on Radeon™ RX 9000 series graphics products. Failure to install may be observed while installing AI Bundle components in some regions with limited access to HuggingFace and GitHub. Model flickering or rendering failure may be observed in Maxon Cinema 4D and Blender on Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.3.1. Intermittent application crash may be observed on some models while running Blender on Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.3.1. You can download the AMD Radeon driver 26.6.4 from the official website here. • Amazon may use OpenAI and Nova models after Anthropic reportedly raises costs by Karthik Mudaliar Amazon is reportedly considering to use OpenAI models and even its own Nova family of AI models after Anthropic raised the cost of using Claude inside Amazon services. According to a report from The Information, Amazon is weighing its options to reduce costs under a new arrangement with Anthropic. But back in April, Amazon said it would invest $5 billion more in Anthropic, with the possibility of adding up to another $20 billion if certain commercial milestones are met. That investment actually came on top of another $8 billion Amazon had already put into the Claude maker. Anthropic, meanwhile, committed to spend more than $100 billion over 10 years on AWS technologies, including Amazon’s Trainium chips. Amazon isn't just a customer of Anthropic but also one of the most important backers and cloud partners. This is why it makes it interesting that Amazon is considering other alternatives to handle its internal workloads. Although Amazon has been building its own options for a while now. Its Nova family of AI models was announced in late 2024 for Amazon Bedrock, with models aimed at text, image, and video tasks. Amazon pitched the model around cost and latency at that time. With that said, OpenAI has also become a more realistic option recently for AWS customers as well as for Amazon itself. Earlier this year, OpenAI brought its latest models and Codex coding agent to Amazon Bedrock, after changes to its previously more restrictive Microsoft cloud arrangement. This allowed AWS to serve even those customers who wanted other alternatives from Claude, without having to move workloads out of Amazon's cloud. Evaluating alternatives could also be due to commercial pressure and not necessarily a sign of a damaged partnership between Amazon and Anthropic. Whether or not Amazon is actually considering switching entirely to OpenAI's models or its own Nova models remains unknown at this moment.
