Many PS3 owners complain of Firmware 2.40 freezes

Recommended Posts

Ok well it doesn't look like anything is bricking at least. Just freezes if anything.

I know NeoGAF isn't the source of PS3s for the whole world, but they have a lengthy and growing thread asking people if 2.4 bricked - http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=324089

Don't think anyone has said yes.

Hope this is just a quick stability fix then, and we're sorted for good.

As I said no issues myself, but if people are reporting freezing on a wide enough scale, better to be safe than sorry and pull the update.

Frustrating though for anyone wanting 2.4, who hasn't updated yet. Hope this is resolved tomorrow (Y)

TBH I think they pulled it down because people were using custom themes and it froze on them, because the XML the XMB uses for themes is probably different. My guess is that they are fixing that issue as well as the slight 0.5 second lag on the ingame xmb that most people have noticed.

I hope if they do release 2.41 that they allow us the option to turn off the clock, not that it bothers me, but more options are better than none.

Fair guess actually, maybe themes, while appearing to work as many people said, are actually causing issues.

I hope it's something as simple/easily overlooked as that.

What I can say is I noticed no real lag using the XMB over SSHD and F@H (just a second or two for icons below each section to load). Maybe that's just because I didn't use it in a full retail title though.

Mine seems to be working OK with 2.40. Original UK launch 60GB here. One question though. Can you turn off the damn clock in the top right of the XMB? When you check the battery level of the controllers the clock doesn't disappear when the battery level appears overlaid on top of the clock. Looks messy.

Yeah it's kind of slow, but not enough for anyone to complain. The undercover highlight of this update is the video upscaling, I didn't notice till I started watching a video and one of the options was full screen, before it was just original, normal and then zoom.

As a preventive measure i started backing up game saves and I checked Kotaku and it said Sony pulled the update. Hopefully it will be an easy fix, I was kinda wanting to update and play some tonite. Oh well. I'm glad they pulled it if it was causing that much problems.

Hmmm... The only issue I'm having actually is Pain keeps wanting to update, it's stuck in an update loop  does anybody have that?

you just got to let it update. It did that to me. it takes a few mins. :) No 2.40 problems here :)

I'll take a video tonight of what it does, I have tried deleting the game and re-downloading it, but nothing.

It just keeps updating. It's been updating for the past 3 hours, lol!

So the PS3 does have its weakness, could this be considered a RROD firmware :)

TBH, no.

It was most likely a simple mistake due to custom themes. About 5% of people have freezing issues.

You can fix the freezing problem anyways by taking out the HDD and formatting it to FAT32 and putting it back in.

has sony stopped making the update available ? I've tried to update all afternoon up until now and i doesnt show an update available. I'm currently running 2.36

Sorry guys checked sony's site. here's what they say....

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We?ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We?ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

I'm happy the clock is there :p but I agree, it was somewhat stupid that the battery indicator goes right on top of it. At the very least Sony should move either the clock or battery indicator so they don't obscure each other.

I haven't had any problems on my 40GB PS3 UK. One thing I did notice was that when you get a message in the game it's a bit long winded to go:

PS Button > Scroll to friends > Scroll to friend that sent you the message > Triangle > Go to message view > Find the message that was sent > Read message

They could easily narrow this down to

PS button > Scroll to friends > Scroll to the friend > Press right and it goes to the most recent message first > Read message

My PS3 updated and was able to boot OK. I have been playing MGS4 tonight, and earlier my roommates were playing Oblivion, Lego Indiana Jones, and Rockband. I have noticed that the in-game XMB was a little slower than it is without a game running. I am using a theme by Kol and a wallpaper from the game Flow. So far so good other than the slight slowdowns.

I'd rather reformat a disk than brick an entire console. It sucks for those who have had problems and my fingers are crossed for mine as well. The PS3 seems to be a lot more stable than the 360 is when it comes to hardware reliability and software glitches are easily fixed with a reformat as a last resort. I don't have a swapped HDD in my system, everything is stock so far. Guess it wouldn't hurt to have a spare freshly formatted HDD with the saves backed up just in case something crappy happens lol.

What a mature comment

Shame to hear the big 2.40 FW has been pulled but I am sure they will fix it soon enough so everyone can enjoy it without any problems!

I can see how that came accross, but I am truly unhappy that randomnut got banned.

Anyway, I think I'm gonna start backing up my PS3 before I do any updates in the future. I'd be so ****ed extremely upset, if I had to format it.

lol, I've been reading some of the comments about the testing. I do user level testing as my day job, some of you believe everything can be tested, you are incorrect. If you were to even attempt to test everything the product would never see release, when a bug is fixed everything has to be re-tested to make sure that fix has not impacted anything else. testing is a long, boring process and you cannot possibly cover every user environment.

wow... just wow...

I leave this place for about 8 hours and and everyone starts to break their PS3 :p

I did feel that the in-game XMB was pretty lagy... but never thought it would actually cause lock-ups

anyways... I glad to see that Sony took down the update in less than 24h of the issue being reported. I am, how ever, a bit disappointed that this incident happened

as a developer I totally understand that you simply can not test for every possible situation when it comes to consumer-level software, but at the same time these kind of incidents a simply tragic and a bit saddening. All I can do at this point is hope that Sony can patch the issue asap and re-release the FW. I would also be expecting some sort of blog post (at least) apologizing for the FW issue and giving at least a general explanation of what had to be fixed.

Oh, and just for the record... FW 2.4 works just fine (last time I checked) on my PS3. I haven't used it since 7am yesterday... since I'm currently attending a family event for he 4th of July, but once I get back home I'm definitely gonna backup my data/saves in case something goes wrong at some point down the line.

edit:

just read this from the official Sony blog (haven't seen it posted here)

so they do plan to re-release the FW, and it seems like the issues was caused by the in-game XMB or at least that's sort of what I get from the post.

Sony is usually pretty fast, so we may be seeing another update by Friday

since some users have 2.36 installed and cant get their hands on 2.40 just yet. how will they be able to play online games where majority of people have 2.40 as their firmwares?

poor people. I would be very upset if my ps3 got screwed up or only have 2.36 and can not use the good features of 2.40 yet.
