New Socom: Confrontation Beta Patch Coming Soon

by: Mark Fajardo

As we all know the Socom: Confrontation beta can be quite the pain. Having to wait 10 minutes to get started is about as awesome as watching paint dry. The Socom team is aware of this problem and are working around the clock to get it fixed and bring us all a better beta experience

As of right now, The Socom Team is focusing in fixing these problems:

  • Abnormally long network synchronization issues when some users in a game have a poor network connection. This issue causes 4-7 minute (or longer) load times when late joining a game.
  • An issue where respawn game late joiners were sometimes stuck in spectator mode and could not respawn into the game.
  • Remove the latency detection network test which is causing some users with poor network connections to receive the network latency icon (red X).

There is currently no announcement for the patch’s release date but we’re hoping next week!

Just want to point people's attention to one small detail..

zomg, NAT issues!

/is a networking god  :p

"poor network connections to receive the network latency icon (red X)."

I don't have a poor network connection :(

See, while I only have a 2MB connection its not that bad.

I mean, While I cant host more than a 4 player game on Warhawk, I can host a Burnout Paradise session for 8 people and have no lag, and don't come across lag playing other games with far more people.

So 2mb isn't great, but it shouldn't be a problem at all for playing this game.

Funny you should bump this thread. Read a few times over at both the EU and US forums that previous saved profiles have a tendency to mess with the game. So I deleted all my saved profiles and settings earlier but want to test this in a closed environment. So I was planning on starting up a server sometime ( From now and until Sunday ) to see if it had any effect.

So, if you are up for some testing soon, let me know :p

I will be.

New patch in a day or two but? No?

Larry by the way, I read Qore beta users get their codes tomorrow! Probably means you can give your code to someone you know :)

I have already given up on this game and bought Warhammer Online instead

I don't have much faith in developers like that, now everyone can moan about it being a Multiplayer Demo ( ... ) / Beta-but-they-don't-really-say-it-is. Never seen such a flawed game in all of my years of gaming, even the beta tests I've been in, this is miserable. I lost so much when they release a patch which made everything 200% worse, I haven't been able to play since monday.

So now I don't care when patches are released, I'll give them one more chance with this patch and then I'll just hop on the Warhammer bandwagon for good.

The game was delayed from 2007 to 2008 and this is what they've come up with? Feels like a cheap game with a production time of 2 months.

It is a beta for a reason, it's an incomplete and free product right now. No one's paying for this "on the shelf".

If it ships in this state, then you can slate the developers to hell and back.

But yeah, they do have a fair bit of work to do (Y)

It's not a Beta. This has been advertised to the Europeans as a Multiplayer Demo, the European community representative calls it a Multiplayer Demo. When you log into the game it even says Multiplayer Demo - So I see this as a Multiplayer Demo and I will judge it like one.

I can usually look past bugs, flaws and technical issues in a Demo/"Beta" and I have never, ever been on the verge on giving up on a game I really like. Gameplay itself did not disappoint, but the entire technical aspect of the game did - everything!

The game has been in production for a long time. They don't have to worry about a single-player part to the game, all they have to worry about now is 7 maps and the multiplayer aspect. Yet, every single part of the game is broken or flawed in some way or another.

Just the menu takes ages to navigate through, how much confidence can you have in developers who can't even create a proper menu? Then we had loading issues pre-patch and not much else, a few freezes. They release a patch which corrects very few of the bugs reported and major flaws posted on the forums - This gave me and tons of other players: Freezing In-game, huge connection problems, missing sound, FPS under 10, freezing PS3's etc. etc.

And I say again, the game is about 1 month away from release ... ONE month and it feels like a VERY early alpha-build.

As I said, I will give them another chance with the patch - But when you are supposed to play this demo or test this not-Beta, when you spent more time resetting the PS3 and navigating menus than actually playing? 2 days ago it took me 20!!!! minutes to get in a game but was never allowed to respawn, so I sat in spectator for around 15 minutes through 4 rounds until I decided to press "Quit game" which resulted in a frozen PS3 AGAIN!!!!!.

As I said, these are maaaaajooorrr technical flaws and isn't even close to being beta stage bugs, these are things you'd see in an alpha build.

Being nitpicky over what it's called is a little pointless.

Whether or not they're calling it a demo or beta, it's being tested by selected users before release date - Why? Clearly to help them pick up on flaws and bugs. I mean no developer really decides to chuck out a free month or two of their game for no reason other than to let people play.

We're "breaking" it on purpose so to speak, essentially to help the developers.

I know there is a lot of issues, but while it's not gold there is always time to improve.

I'll wait to see how it ships, but obviously as I'm testing I'll check out each patch to see if anything is getting better.

Yet, every single part of the game is broken or flawed in some way or another.

While the list of issues certainly isn't small, I think that's a little far fetched. When I got a good 20-25mins in without issues/minor issues, I definitely had some fun.

So no server then? LOL

And FTR, when I downloaded it on my end, it said "Socom Confrontation Multiplayer Beta"

And I also am %110 with AB on this, we are playing it to hopefully avoid any of these issues when it comes out in well over a month.

The only reason we are even playing is to get it right. (Hopefully)

I thought I just imagined sound disappearing  Glad I'm not going mad after all!

I actually think they should delay the game again. Offering a demo/beta a month before release is absolutely pointless in its current condition. It really is broken, no ifs or buts about it. In comparison, I'd say this game is probably worse than the Red Faction Guerilla beta, and that game isn't released until Q1 2009. At least they will have time on their hands to make changes if they put the time and effort into it. God knows how SOCOM will end up with less than a month to go or w/e it is.

I've read comments the past week from other forums and we're definitely not the only ones experiencing problems, so it's not even a small majority effected. Everyone has been ripping this game to shreds.

In all honesty, I believe it deserves it too, this is their 8th game in the series and they have made so many mistakes it's really worrying.

Nitpicky? You pointed it it was a Beta yourself when it's actually advertised as a multiplayer demo. That is a huge difference because it changes to way you should look at the game.

The game has been in, are you ready, closed beta for over a month prior to this and the game is still this flawed? Another sign in my book of developers you can have little confidence in. I talked to a few people who had been in the closed test, they even said many of the reported bugs hadn't been corrected, most "fixes" were just Slant Six ideas.

I don't mind other people cutting them more slack but as I said, this is from a technical standpoint, the worst multiplayer demo / "Beta" I have tried in my almost 15 years of gaming and that says a thing or two. So where as I had tons of expectations, I just lost them all. Now instead of me giving them chances, they have to prove themselves before I start caring about the game again.

But let's see if they can pull something out of their sleeves ...

Oh by the way, in the latest patch-notes, I like how they blame the users for all the problems instead of themselves

And Larry, as I said a few times now - It's being advertised as a Demo in EU and Beta in US. Still up for the server though, would love to see if pre-patch profiles could mess up the game.

Problem is, it isn't Zipper Interactive developing any more, so this is still new grounds to Slant Six.

It's a pre-release test of a product. Essentially no matter what on earth they call it, you're beta testing/testing an incomplete build.

I seriously scratch my head at people getting uptight over the naming to the point where they are saying it changes things/how you look at the game. It's an incomplete game being tested by selected people.

The main aim clearly to unroot issues through stress testing, and testing with large numbers of people.

Oh by the way, in the latest patch-notes, I like how they blame the users for all the problems instead of themselves

I'd say some of the problems definitely will be created through large numbers of people entering to play.

Up till now I doubt they've had the amount of people online they now do.

I wouldn't be surprised if they successfully fix the networking issues, a lot of the freezing/lag will disappear.

I hope anyway (Y)

If personally feel if they get rid of the connection issues, which has been the root cause to the only major problems I have had myself, then this game is a great game. When I have played, and played with no issues, I love the game. Plain and simple. That is me though I guess.

Okay, so who is starting the server and what is the name? That is all I care about. LOL

If not I am forced to go play Mercs 2 on the 360.

Yeah, but the difference between a "Demo" and a "Beta" is, a Demo is close to the retail product and is the sort of "Demonstration". You try out a "Demo" to see if you like the game and if you'd be willing to shell out ?30-40.

A beta is purely to test the game and can be changed in many ways, you can judge the game of a Beta but isn't really fair.

That is a huge difference in my book and saying it doesn't matter is just daft. And I have been in so many Beta tests for various console and PC games throughout my life, I have even tested a rather large Danish title In-house in various builds up until release.

What I'm talking about here is confidence in the developers. The game is flawed beyond a stage I can't take serious and the general support seems really lacking, specially with the small amount of work they have to put in the game compared to other larger developers. The game has even been in development for quite some time plus a huge delay.

My complaint is all about confidence in the developers and seeing how the game progresses. I can't even remember the last time a "Beta" was completely destroyed for so many players by a single patch? Yes, had it been only the freezing, only the lag problems, only the sound disappearing or only the huge constant drop in FPS I could say "This will be fixed" but all of these problems, ALL of them were introduced in one single patch and in the first patch-notes they release, they blame each user for slow connections as the root of the problem. So a Danish buddy hosting a game on a 10/10 connection, me and 5 other people are join on connections ranging from 10/2 to 50/50 MBit all with correct open ports are the cause of the huge lag? No, they are just blaming users in general for a flaw they introduced in a patch, NOBODY had the problem pre-1.10.

Well, we can argue this all day - I just have little confidence in Slant Six, specially this being new territory for them and start blaming others for their mistakes.

Larry>: I'll give you the info in 10 minutes.

Fair enough, we'll see what they can do, this arguing about "demo/beta" really isn't going to get anyone anywhere, as only Slant Six can make an impact with patches.

I would not say this is close to the retail product at all but, unless they plan on shipping a technically flawed game. Content wise, yeah, what's there is probably final. It's time for polishing the actual mechanics/technical side of things now. Which we're apparently helping do by showing up flaws.

Sony are focusing quite heavily on allowing people to beta test games right now - MGO/Socom/LBP/KZ2/R2. They're obviously wanting to try the approach of getting general PS3 owners in early (month(s)/week(s)) to get feedback and test the games.

I'm quite liking it actually, I'm sure it will lead to better games, and of course, you can't complain about getting your hands on things early :p Unless jumping in early and seeing a game you're anticipating maybe being a little rougher than you want, puts you off. I just say keep positive till nearer release, and if it still blows then, well, the reviews will start showing that up

Yup in 5-10, just gotta make a phone call first.

I still have no PS3 mic, but it's cool, you can all just pwn/smack talk me anyway, I suck at Socom

    • The site is pretty sparse on features / tech specs. Can I plug it into a PC/hone/Switch via USB-C and use it as an external display? If so, what's the virtual resolution of the screen, the refresh rate, PPI of the image etc? Is the text crisp enough to use for coding at say 12pt? Is it good enough for playing dark games, like say Path of Exile 2? How about fast games like car racing games? Just how do they expect anyone to order this thing without giving out all this info?
    • I call complete bs on this - no way your average joe / jane is using AI.
