[Football] Summer 2009 transfer thread

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he will not make any further signings during the summer.

United have brought in Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia and Bordeaux's Gabriel Obertan to replace departed forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

Ferguson revealed he had bid for Karim Benzema, who joined Real Madrid, but insisted he had no further targets.

"It is the end of our business," he said. "Stories about who we are supposed to be getting - forget it."

United pocketed ?80m from Ronaldo's world record transfer to Real Madrid and the Old Trafford club had been expected to spend a sizeable proportion of the funds on new players.

Among those to be linked with a move to the Premier League champions are Brazilian forward Douglas Costa, French playmaker Franck Ribery, and Spain striker David Villa.

But Ferguson feels the market is now over-inflated and he does not want to pay over the odds for players.

Real Madrid, for example, have spent in excess of ?170m this summer in capturing Kaka from AC Milan, Benzema from Lyon and Ronaldo.

And Ferguson added: "There are some amazing numbers being talked about, not all of them realistic. It is very difficult to get value now.

"In a way we benefited through the sale of Cristiano, although that figure was non-negotiable.

"But I feel we have a good squad, which meant there was no need for knee-jerk reactions.

"We asked about Benzema and we had a value for him. Lyon have done well because they got 42m euros but I think we took a sensible view."

Instead, Valencia has arrived from Wigan, 20-year-old winger Obertan has been recruited and Owen was signed on a free transfer after his contract with Newcastle expired.

And the England striker has been handed the number seven shirt - the shirt vacated by Ronaldo.

Owen will add extra experience to an attack that still boasts plenty of established talent in Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, plus youngsters Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda.

Sky Sports Sources understand Manchester City are in talks with Arsenal over the possible signing of striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Adebayor has been linked with a move away from Arsenal this summer, with a number of European clubs said to be interested in his services.

But the Togo international's future looked to be settled after his agent recently stated he would be staying at Emirates Stadium.

However, it is understood talks between affluent club City and their Premier League rivals Arsenal over a possible deal have begun.

The 25-year-old signed for the Gunners from Monaco in 2006 and has scored 62 goals in 142 appearances for the North London club.

Reports have suggested Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could turn to Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh as a replacement for Adebayor.

City have already signed Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz from Aston Villa and Manchester City since the end of last season.

Mark Hughes is also believed to be lining up a swoop for former Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez, while Chelsea captain John Terry is a known target.

Manager Hughes is keen to build a side capable of breaking up the so-called 'big four', and the potential captures of Tevez and Adebayor would demonstrate real intent.

Manchester City and Arsenal have both stated they will not comment on transfer speculation.

Sir Alex looks to be talking a bit of a porky, because he doesn't rule out spending entirely. If you read his interview and Gill's you'll see that Sir Alex is directing the 'spending' at the 'big money' signings, and Gill said as at the end of his interview:

I?m sure there?ll be some player activity going on while we?re over there (referring to the Asia tour)

I'm fair sure Fergie won't just splash the cash now, but I'm certain one or two other signings will come through towards the end of the window. I've seen some saying that the press conference statement was just to decrease the valuations of certain players *cough* Aguero *cough*. Anyways whatever happens, I'm sure he knows what he's d:)ng. :)

Manchester City have agreed a five-year deal to sign former West Ham and Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez.

The 25-year-old Argentine forward, who left Old Trafford last month, will complete his move subject to a medical.

"It's terrific news," City boss Mark Hughes said. "He is an international of the highest class who possesses all the attributes to help drive us forward.

"This is yet another deal that shows the commitment of the owner to make this club the very best it can be."

Tevez, who will wear the number 32 shirt at Eastlands, spent a season with West Ham before joining United on an extended loan deal in 2007.

He started 99 league and cup matches for Sir Alex Ferguson's team and scored 34 goals, but decided to leave despite being offered a permanent contract.

Time to show off the west ham transfers....wait we haven't made any big ones :( :p

And there won't be any, since it looks like we're going bust again! :(

But don't disregard Jimenez and apparently Mancini, also from Inter, is on the way with the same deal.

Told you Tevez was going to City ;)

The delay has been because of his holiday.

Really? From his reasons behind leaving man utd, I assumed it was because he wanted a chance to sit down and thoroughly investigate the area, to see if Manchester is a place he would like to move to, and raise a family there, apparently the change of location will do him some good, as the City benches are said to be more comfortable.

City are getting rediculous now. Bellamy, Santa Cruz, Robinho, Tevez, Caceido, Benjani, Bojinov and (probably) Adebayor.

They have Ched Evans as well ;)

It looks like AS, Marca and some Liverpool insiders are confirming that an agreement concerning Xabi Alonso has been concluded between Real Madrid and the english club. The player will join La Casa Blanca on 19th July for 37M euros (26M?).

Barcelona have confirmed on their official website they have reached an agreement in principle with Inter Milan to sign Maxwell for ?4,5 million, with the possibility of a ?500,000 increase.

The Catalan side state that a deal could be closed in a matter of hours and that Maxwell is expected to sign a three-year contract with the club.

Juventus have completed the signing of reported Arsenal target Felipe Melo.

The Turin giants have paid ?20.5million (?17.6m) to land the Fiorentina midfielder on a five-year contract.

Melo, who starred in this summer's Confederations Cup for Brazil, was thought to have been high on Gunners boss Arsene Wenger's wish-list.

He has, though, elected to stay in Italy having agreed personal terms with the Old Lady.

"I believe a lot in this side. It has been reinforced and can rival any team as we target all the trophies in Italy and Europe," Melo told the Juventus channel.

He recently signed a contract extension with Fiorentina but a release clause was inserted, which Juve have triggered with their offer.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta and director of football Txiki Begiristain are in Milan with the view of negotiating a deal with Inter for their ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swedish international has never fully committed his future to the Milanese giants and Laporta is attempting to prise the former Juventus star to his treble winning side.

After negotiations for Valencia hitman David Villa reportedly broke down, the Blaugrana patron claimed the club would be exploring other options and it seems one of them could be 'Ibracadabra'.

Earlier in the summer, reports also emerged that a swap deal between the two clubs that would see the ex-Ajax player move to the Catalan club and Samuel Eto'o move in the opposite direction was in place, but the transfer never materialised.

The two club's have been involved in a fair bit of activity with one another lately, as Barcelona have already confirmed they will be signing Inter left-back Maxwell for approximately ?5 million and on Thursday stories emerged that the Serie A outfit were on the verge of taking Aliaksandr Hleb on-loan.

UPDATE: 00:30 CET: Inter president Massimo Moratti has admitted that he has met with Laporta to talk about a swap deal involving Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto'o.

"I have met Laporta. We spoke about Eto'o and Ibrahimovic," the oil tycoon stated.

swap deal on the cards there

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
