Windows 7 Build 7100 RC (Changes/Bugs/Tweaks) Discussion

I don't think this is a bug. If your checking the box that says you do not want windows to remember your password, then why would you want it to remember the password for the current site? If you click No then the box shouldn't come up again and offer to remember passwords of any sites.

Ticking the box stops the dialog from appearing every time you log into a website for the first time. It doesn't stop IE from remembering the log in details you enter unless you clicked No in the dialog box.

The text next to the box is the same as "Don't show this dialog box again".

Could someone please explain, what's up with saving network passwords in 7?

In XP, when i access some network resource (\\server for example) i get a prompt with username and password and an option to remember this. And thats it. XP remembers it, and never asks it again.

Now with Vista, there was also a checkbox for saving credentials, but... it never worked. After logoff, the password prompt was back. So the way to fix this, was to use "control userpasswords2" and just save the machine/username/password manually. It worked!

In 7 we now have this new Windows Vault, and i just can't get it to work, as i want.

I can see my saved credentials, but after logoff it remembers the username, but always asks the password.

I have tried to add the creds. manually or checked the 'remember' box, but for some reason it never remembers the passwords.

Further more - for rdp connections it seems to remember nothing. Even the username will be blank when connecting. In the mean time- Windows Vault happily shows me the saved TERMSRV entries and RDP window says "Saved credentials will be used..." But..its..just..not..working.

Any thoughts on whats going on here?

I did a clean install of 7100 x64 last night and I'm pretty impressed with it so far. Performance is improved from what I can tell. 7077 was already a fast and relatively stable build but 7100 feels even more stable and a bit faster than 7077. 7100 no longer asks me to reboot after connecting additional SATA after a fresh install. In 7077 I had to reboot after connecting my 2nd SATA drive after a format. Avast updates manually now which was sort of broken for me in all the past builds. The most dramatic change for me was GTA IV on 7100. It runs so much smoother on 7100 than it did on any of the past builds. I used to get the odd micro stutter in 7077 and those little hiccups are gone in 7100.

i have build 7000 installed. should i install rc? are there major performance improvement between two builds?

If you are still using 7000, upgrading to 7100 is a must. Performance-wise, "major" improvement is an understatement. There is an enormous difference and the build is much more stable.

I am having a fit deciding whether to drop my new 7100 dvd burn in there or not. I know the official RC is near and I can't decide if its worth it, lol. Is there any chance the official RC will be a different version from 7100?

running 7077 x86 btw, lol

apologies if somebody mentioned this already. I did a clean install of 64bit and I can't install either the 9-3 or 9-4 ATI win7 64bit drivers. I had no problems under 7077 64bit. As soon as the installation starts searching for old and installing the new drivers it BSODs. The native MS drivers seem to be updated and fine, so it's not a very big deal. My gfx card is a ATI HD 3870 500Mb. it bsods with a plug and play error...

hopefully this will go away soon

edit1: and it went away soon, hehe. I previously tried to install the suite. This time I downloaded the driver package only and it worked - go figure.

edit 2: was able to install ccc as well without problems. 9-4 control center did not work for under 7077, seems to be fixed with 7100.

I would say unlikely. First of all, they've said that the build number 7100 is reserved for the RC. Second, this build has the shorter build string, just like the beta so it is indeed intended for public release (if not, it's very close). The only exception I can think of is if they decide to recompile it without changing the build number (like they can do for public releases). However from what I've read, this build was already sent out to TAP etc. so I would say that's also a strong indication that it's legit. :)

No chance IMO. I also waited for the official beta first time around and it was pointless and you'd save yourself the hassle on hoping MS doesn't have any server issues when they open their pipes.

I have an old program that opens a DOS like window as it checks for updates before it launches itself

It worked in 7077, does not work at all in 7100... Compatibility mode doesn't help at all... Disappointing and frustrating

Also, 7100 overall is running slower for me

64 bit user here

Edit: Still seems "slow", but my program seems to be working... the installation for the program appears to have been ****ed up, so that's good that I can hopefully get it working

I assume Windows 7 has to do all its indexing and stuff like that before my computer starts feeling as fast as it did with 7077

Finally got Windows 7 RC up and running. Everything works great, however, when I try to play a .mov file in Windows Media Player it gives me a C00D11B1 "Windows Media Player encountered a problem trying to play this file." Does anyone else get this?

I can't play any mkv files, the video stops and media player dies after 2 sec . I installed only the mkv specific codecs with K lite codec pack. Any idea or codec pack recommendation ?

Uninstall all codec packs and just install haali media splitter. All the ncessary codecs are in win7 by default. Although u might want to install ac3filter as well since it has dts audio codec which win7 does not.

Depends on what's inside. If it's H.264 + AAC, it should work fine. If has SVQ3 or something, then it won't work out of the box.

WOW .. less than 20 minutes install (from the moment i click on Clean Install to the first screen of the desktop) from my POS Laptop (1.6ghz Dual Core P4 with a 120gig 5400RPM Drive) from a HDD USB install (i always do that). This is the fastest W7 install on my machine so far..

Still dies. I'll install VLC.

I always figured the checkbox meant you don't want it to remember passwords at all, but it seems they changed the wording. I didn't notice.

This is why I like Firefox better.

I have one important question. Will Thinstalled/Thinapped programs run in this build? I really depend on portable apps. Right now Thinstall/Thinapp incompatibility and the WiFi bugs are the only things keeping me from using Windows 7 as my main OS instead of Vista.

Played around a bit more with network passwords and actually found smth interesting: network passwords will only be remembered, if the target machine is accessed by ip adress. If i save the creds. by machine name, its password will be lost after logoff. Weid stuff...

Also, in credential manager, there's a new line called Persistence. It's Enterprise for my networked XP machines, but Home Server will be saved as Logon Session (and the creds. will then be lost after logoff) Manual entry gives me Enterprise and works ok.

This Credential Manager is confusing as hell...

    • I and many others did not vote to get out of the E.u because of Putin or Farage, we did so for our own reasons. You don't have to tel me what my own did or did not do when it comes to the E.U. The EEC is or was the European Economic Community, a different beast to what the E.U is now.The EEC was a mainly about trading, the E.U have gone far beyond that and as I have said before, is now more of a United States of Europe. The U.K did not vote to join a United States of Europe. Anyway, they did not want us in there in the first place, Charles de Gaulle stopped us joining as he claimed we didn’t agree with the core ideas of integration. He was not wrong and that is why we voted out of the E.U when the time came. I was not old enough to vote the first time. My only regret is that we did not have the referendum years ago and got out years ago. If we rejoined, we would have to agree to join the Euro and no doubt Schengen, agree with freedom of movement, we have enough problem with people coming over here as it is. i have no problem with people coming over here if they work and don't try to push their way of life onto us. The E.U has a currency, freedom of movement, an anthem a flag, a parliament, well they are there, not sure if they do anything. Don't sound like something that is just for trading. Oh yeah, also wanted a euro Army. How many stupid rules have the E.U made that we had to follow? I doubt I will see the Uk rejoin the E.U, which suits me. Oh yeah, my partner is Polish, she came over here before Poland joined the E.U and she got fed up of people just coming over here with ease, while she had to struggle. She is now a British citizen and have been for a fair few years

    • Screamer is 50% off on Steam, making it £24.99 here in the UK: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2814990/Screamer/ You might remember the series from the mid 90s / early 2000s, this new game is also by Milestone who created the older games.
    • U.S. partially reverses Anthropic AI ban for Mythos but keeps Fable 5 off the market by Karthik Mudaliar Anthropic says that the U.S. government has finally allowed it to restore Claude Mythos 5. But of course, there's a catch. The rollout is again for a limited set of U.S. organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure. The company announced this in a post on X (formerly Twitter). This does not mean that Anthropic's latest frontier models are back to normal availability. Fable 5, which was a tuned version of Mythos 5 for public release, remains unavailable. Anthropic said that it is still working with the government to expand Mythos 5 access and make Fable 5 available again, but there's no timeline. Reports from Bloomberg and Reuters say that this decision actually came through a letter from the U.S. Commerce Department. According to Reuters, this would allow more than 100 companies and institutions access to Mythos 5. Reuters also reported that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s letter removes the need for export licenses for approved companies’ non-US citizen employees, as well as Anthropic’s own non-US citizen employees, while restrictions remain for organizations outside the approved list. Anthropic isn't alone with this kind of controlled rollout. OpenAI's newest model family, GPT 5.6, was announced just yesterday, but isn't available for everyone yet. In its announcement, OpenAI also said that access to these models is initially limited to a select group of trusted partners and organizations, with broader access planned later this year. Both of these cases show that frontier AI launches are no longer just ordinary product releases and more like slow and vetted deployments shaped heavily by the U.S. government.
