Windows 7 Build 7100 RC (Changes/Bugs/Tweaks) Discussion

Recommended Posts

Hi does anyone have a idea when the rc1 build 7100 will expire and stop workig

Thank You

Timebomb on pre-release builds is usually 365 days

I can't play any mkv files, the video stops and media player dies after 2 sec . I installed only the mkv specific codecs with K lite codec pack. Any idea or codec pack recommendation ?

KL codec pack (apart from containing pirated releases of Real and Quicktime) has some broken filters, and probably interferes with the default filters. I would recommend using the Windows 7 version of the Vista Codec Pack from here:

I apologise, someone appears to have screwed up the word filter to a point where it won't even let us link to codec packs that are legitimate FOSS packs, so go onto google, search for "Shark 007", go to the top link, and click the Windows 7 Codecs part

Still dies. I'll install VLC.

The KL codec pack probably broke the default filters, I would suggest you re-install Windows to restore them to their normal functionality

The superbar/taksbar/wtf ever its called, lol......still has the damn blur when you place it at the top of the screen. Not an issue at the bottom. You have to be chittin me, not one single tester at ms likes the superbar at the top? really? you serious? lol

I would rant, but this is beta. I love it too. Fast fast fast. Hammer out the bugs MS.

Use CCCP and install Media Player Homecinema Classic

(it comes included with the latest beta build of CCCP - http://www.cccp-project.net/beta/)

WMP12 is pretty hit/miss with HD content, it lags and stutters sometimes for me and even crashes, and I have a powerful system.

I recomended Media Player Classic + FFDShow codecs

Why is it that 7077 had more features and was more stable.......for example, my internet was not working when it prepared my desktop for the first time and also when IE8 crashed in 7077, itd come up with a window asking me to reopen the crashed tab or just close IE. That's not availible in 7100 and the taskbar glow is gone....why would they remove it after one build? They also removed my native resolution (1440x900) and i had to add it manually. 7100 doesn't even have send feedback or a new desktop wallpaper...whats the dealio...

The Windows Media Center startup sound needs to be changed too, because it's just terrible. Why would anybody choose that? Why would anybody even make it?

I actually like it. It's as pompous as national anthems. :D

It is a little bit too long (the final drum beats should conclude before the menu items pop up, not right after they pop up).

Anyone elses volume "VERY" low? I've tried updating the drivers (hd audio).

Does it happen when you open certain applications or games? Sometimes you get the volume going from 100% all the way to 20%. If this is the case, open up the Sounds applet, go to the Communications tab, and set the option to 'do nothing.'

I think build 7100 will not be RC build to be released on May 5th for the public mainly because it doesn't have Send Feedback option and this build looks like some sort of internal build.
There aren't send feedback buttons on RC builds I don't believe.

In this case, with the Windows 7 development teams attitude so far, I'm willing to bet there will be. Feedback, or so they certainly claim, has been instrumental to them so far. I doubt that's just gonna change in the blink of an eye. Besides, why turn down the opportunity to gather a huge amount of helpful data?

It's still in there, just not on the windows. You've gotta look around for it.

Is it just me, or in 7100 Aero Snap activates not when your mouse hits the edge of the screen with a window, but when you drag it close to the edge, like 20px? I actually preferred the previous version, as i like to have my windows close to edges but not maximized.. Now whenever I drag a window and the cursor is 20px from the edge it offers me to snap the window. Is there any reg. tweak or other way to change when the snap is invoked?

That shouldn't have changed. Snap won't activate until the cursor actually hits the side. What graphics chip and driver do you have? Any window management utilities (Stardock stuff or what not) that might be messing with it?

I don't know if it's what he means, but if you resize until the mouse hits the top and then make it smaller again, it adds a massive margin. Slightly annoying if you want the window close to the edge and accidentally touch the edge.

    • Microsoft kills AI-powered history search feature in Edge by Usama Jawad In June 2025, Microsoft began rolling out AI-powered history search functionality with Edge 138. The idea was simple: allow customers to use natural language phrases and synonyms to find their desired history items rather than matching keywords exactly. Although the company had already rolled out this capability in a phased manner, it has now decided to cancel it. In an update on its Microsoft 365 Roadmap, Microsoft has announced that it has decided not to move forward with AI-powered history search. The company has not detailed the exact reasoning behind this move, but it has apologized to customers for the inconvenience. The move is rather interesting as it seemingly could have improved user productivity. Edge users wouldn't have to worry about typos or exact keywords, and just focus on what they were trying to locate in their browser history. Microsoft had also assured users that an on-device AI model would be leveraged for this functionality, and no data would be sent to the cloud. IT admins also had the ability to control its availability through the EdgeHistoryAISearchEnabled policy. When the feature began rolling out last year, many of our readers called it creepy, noting that they couldn't trust Microsoft to keep their data on their device. Others also questioned its usefulness, saying that it's simply a way for Microsoft to insert more AI bloat into its products. Although the Redmond tech giant had stated that it will be more mindful about surfacing Copilot features in Windows 11 apps, we later discussed how this is mostly a rebranding exercise rather than an actual axing of AI functionalities. Indeed, a Microsoft executive later emphasized how they want to reshape Windows for the agentic AI era. That said, it does seem like at least AI-powered Edge history search isn't a part of that vision.

    • Not likely, of course, that we will see routine citizenship checks as they only involve compliance with existing federal voting laws already on the books for decades. This seems a non-issue entirely. Only fools would have the government rush headlong into an AI program few can understand or predict, or even debug...
