Windows 7 Build 7100 RC (Changes/Bugs/Tweaks) Discussion

Recommended Posts

I keep all setup files in an install folder ready to go. Followed by that all music/pictures/data is on a second drive.

I have Mesh, keeping a online backup of data as well that is stored on drive c. (Such as Mozilla profile directory, Foobar config directory etc.)

I also use Office 2007 Student edition and have installed it 20+ times.

I see what you are saying. Unfortunately, backing up just the set-up files won't help with all of the configurations I would have to make to every program, especially my IDEs and setting the path variables.

I will still consider a clean install, though, but it's just going to be extremely annoying when I have to do one come RTM.

So will Office 2007 definitely install over 3 times then? I find that very odd as it says you can only use it on 3 computers, maximum. Surely the only way it can police this is by not allowing you to use the license key more than 3 times?

RTM won't be out for a long time yet. I personally cannot seeing it being RTMd before October this year.

Never had am issue reinstalling Office. Then again mine is Ultimate that was $75 bucks as a student deal last year.

I have been using 7 and enjoying it since it was available.

I just updated to the RC and am now having problems with DNS.

I have a Linksys N router connected to Cox cable modem. Wifi connections work fine. The problem is with the wired connection to the main computer. I can ping an IP but not a name. I actually got it to work by unchecking all the boxes in the network card's properties window, restarting, then rechecking the boxes. Everything else short of that did nothing.

Since my last restart, I am back to no internet connection and the above trick did not work this time.

I tried tracerrt and opendns. Again, I can ping an IP but not a name.

I am re-updating now. Not sure if a clean install would fix this.

It looks like there is a problem with DNS as far as I can tell. I reinstalled the network card and that also did not help.

Any ideas? I cannot find any answers elsewhere.

Thanks in advance!

Even after 100+ posts in a dozen forums about the internet loss bug in every build since 7022, it continues into the RC.

This is the bug that affects both wired and wireless connections, drops connection, defies troubleshooting, hangs upon restart requiring hard shutdown, then resets upon startup. More than two dozen users reported it in a thread on Neowin for 7077.

I have started a new thread "7100: Lose Internet Yet?" Maybe someone from MS will see it this time.

I never had any connection drops, neither now in 7100 x64, nor in any other build before.

I'm using Realtek onboard Lan on my Gigabyte X48 DQ6 mainboard with the Realtek Vista x64 drivers.

Can the RC be activated with one of those keys from the Beta (Build 7000)?

Yes, works fine

And has anyone had any experience upgrading from the beta to 7100?

You'll need to change the cversion.ini in the .iso if you want to do that.

The only problem I have run across in this build is a anti-virus detection issue with VirusScan Enterprise + AntiSpyware Enterprise 8.7.0i in Windows Security Center.

That's nothing new, it has already been reported in 7068.

This is the fastest clean install I have ever done, from the moment I inserted the CD and started setup to the moment I was on my new desktop took exactly 16 minutes! it also recognized all my devices such as controllers, hi-def audio, modem etc, that impressed me.

Second thing that has impressed me in this build is memory usage, I used to to start the computer at %25 with just my gadgets and auto start programs, now with the same programs and gadgets after a bootup it's only using %18 RAM, that's quite an improvement IMHO.

Currently the only problem I have is that despite regonizing my Logitech Pro 9000 quick cam and installing drivers for it after plugging it it, I'm being unable to install Logitech's software for the camera, so Im unable to record HD video etc, but no biggy.

I've already noticed that same memory optimisation in 7106.

If you are still using 7000, upgrading to 7100 is a must. Performance-wise, "major" improvement is an understatement. There is an enormous difference and the build is much more stable.

VERY much improved in the stability department is 7100 x64 (over both 7077 x64 and 7000 x64).

The biggest surprise is that every application I've run so far is *faster* in 7100 x64 than in Vista Ultimate x64, despite the hard drive (not partition) 7100 is installed on being considerably *slower* (40 GB PATA for 7100 vs. 200 GB SATA-150 for Vista Ultimate). Same hardware. Same applications. Except for the sound card, the same drivers (in the case of the graphics card, quite literally the same drivers; AMD Catalyst 9.4 is a Vista/7 unified driver set, so instead of downloading the drivers over again, I simply upgraded the drivers in 7100 from the Vista drive).

Vista will likely be replaced by 7 as soon as is feasible.

.......

What about my Firefox installation? Is there an easy way to back-up my profile so all of the extensions and themes I have are still in tact as well as my bookmarks and all of their tags? The bookmarks and tags are vital and I can't lose them.

......

Download and install FEBE extension for Firefox. It will do a comprehensive backup of everything in a few seconds and it's free.

That doesn't happen with me. Make sure it's set to send files to the recycle bin and just not delete them outright.

Aaaaaaaammmm

Kevin.. really need ur help.. every setting is perfect as it should be.

it dun delete it rite away.. but it just asks do u want to permanently delete it ???

it dun say delete to recycle bin..

but if i delete anything from drive c or e.. then it says delete to recycle bin....

what could b going wrong here?? any help??

Very impressive for a RC built- stable, fast, and minimal to non exsistent spinning circles... Audio, Network and the correct default resolution for multiple monitors working 100% on first install without additional drivers.

I wonder how Vista users who paid a hefty premium are going to feel when the final version is released. This is what Vista should of been. I think all the people who paid for Vista should get Windows 7 for free!

BUG still unfixed: Thinapp'ed portables applications still crashing.

Is the MFST team ever going to fix this? :

98vdr4.png

It's in Vista also.

wow its still in there.

its a strange bug, when i installed build 7077 there was a icon there but just the other day the icon went missing and i have no idea why

everything installed and running..

well i came from build 7057 and all i wana say is..

i dont feel or c anything different or new... its not faster its exactly the same..

instead my boottime is 4 sec slower...

it was 55sec from pressin the power button.. now its 59....

it dun matter.. but the main problem i had with every build is still there. . my display driver file crashes.. and that file comes with windows.. not my drivers..

What about my copy of Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student? It says I am only able to use the license key 3 times. I'm unsure what would happen if I clean-installed the Windows 7 release candidate and tried to install my copy of Office again? I don't think I should risk trying that at least until university is over for this year.

Apparently they don't care how many times you install Office 2007, as long as it's the same machine. They probably generate a hash of your BIOS or something related and store it for a few months on the activation servers, which get wiped every now and then. The 3 times is probably the maximum number of computers you can install Office on within a, say half year window (could be more, could be less, this is just a guess) without it making you ring up MS to get it activated.

im all done settin up my PC...

there is one problem..

I have a creative soundblaster and use the kX drivers..

well whenever i restart computer..

the settings are reverted ..

as in the rear front speakers switched..

when i toggle then off.. it dun save it for the next start...

so i have to do it everytime windows starts.. :(

nebody help??

    • Simple answer is yes, you will still get the Windows updates and as long as browser is up to date, you will be good. Only thing secure boot does is protect you against boot level threats and make it harder to install other OS's. I've been looking into this pretty thoroughly lately myself as wifes computer has secure boot disabled plus my other, older computers that run Linux, don't have secure boot enabled. Have seen all kinds of questions about this on the Linux Mint and MX Linux forums. Just don't suddenly enable secure boot now.

    • AltSendme 0.4.1 by Razvan Serea AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform application designed for fast, secure, and private peer-to-peer file transfers. It allows users to send files or entire directories directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, accounts, or any personal information. Everything is encrypted end-to-end using modern protocols like QUIC and TLS 1.3, ensuring both strong security and low-latency performance. Transfers are verified with BLAKE3 for data integrity, and interrupted downloads automatically resume, making the experience reliable even on unstable connections. You can transfer anything—images, videos, documents, and more. Integrity checks are performed on both ends, so your files are automatically verified for correctness during both sending and receiving. AltSendme works seamlessly across local networks or long-distance links, capable of saturating multi-gigabit connections for extremely fast delivery. With built-in NAT traversal and encrypted relay fallback, it connects devices almost anywhere. The app integrates with the Sendme CLI and will soon support mobile and web platforms. Fully free and open-source, AltSendme offers a lightweight, privacy-first alternative to traditional cloud-based services, removing size limits, upload costs, and unnecessary data exposure. AltSendme 0.4.1 changelog: Release Highlights Self-hosted relays: Run your own iroh relay so transfers don't rely on public infrastructure. Includes a full deployment template in deploy/relay/ with Docker Compose for a VPS and configuration examples for production use. Fly.io support: One-click deploy template for Fly.io, including a quick-start config (fly.dev.toml) for testing without a custom domain, plus production setup with Let's Encrypt and your own hostname. Relay settings UI: New Settings → Network panel to choose how AltSendme connects: automatic public relays, custom self-hosted URLs (with optional auth token), or disabled. Test connections, verify latency, and see live relay status in the footer. Disable relays: Turn off relay servers entirely when you only need same-network transfers (e.g. LAN). Direct connections only. No relay hop required when devices can reach each other. Android graduates from beta: Android is now part of the regular release cycle alongside desktop. APKs ship with each version (universal, arm64, and armv7). Other improvements Private relay access control via shared auth token Relay fallback notifications when a custom relay is unreachable Broadcast mode toggle in sharing settings Android release build fixes (split-per-ABI APKs, universal APK preservation) UI polish: mobile safe-area insets, dropzone layout, transfer progress animation Bug fixes for minification-related serialization issues and system tray icon loading What's Changed feat(relay): add relay status functionality and settings UI (a120cdf) feat(relay): implement custom relay server configuration and verification (51276c7) feat(relay): add configuration for private relay access and enhance observability features (48fbabf) feat(relay): enhance relay URL validation, display connection status (d4fffa0) feat(relay): add RelayChangeGuard component and enhance relay-related translations (16ba514) feat(broadcast): add toggle setting for broadcast mode in sharing UI (ca6d977) fix(relay): correct QUIC discovery port, pin image, templatize fly.dev (52a2ba5) fix: More broken serialization due to minification (67491a9) fix(android): preserve true universal APK across per-ABI builds (e9f256f) fix(ui): conditional safe-area insets padding on mobile (1182f0e) refactor(transfer): CircularRing component animation fix (944572b) chore(android): drop x86 and x86_64 release APKs, keep universal+arm64+armv7 (34ada0b) Download: AltSendme 0.4.1 | ARM64 | ~9.0 MB (Open Source) Download: AltSendme for MacOS | Android Links: AltSendme Home Page | GitHub | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
    • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
