Putting up invisible walls I guess... They did handle it badly though, it should come up with like a 5 second timer saying return into playzone, not just pin you down right away. No, I understand you can freeroam if you're not on a mission, but for example, when you're bringing the train to safety (first mission in the demo), if you get too far from the train, the screen turns black and white and resets you to the train. that's what I meant, the missions have a restricted area or radius around the objective it seems. Ah well maybe in specific missions like escort ones, but I've not read any sort of complaints in reviews/on boards about mission restrictions like that being an issue. It's not really any different than a car chase mission in GTA4 failing if you fall too far behind even although you could still realistically catch the car. It somewhat adds a layer of tension or forces control.... inFAMOUS seems to be pretty forgiving though with death/mission failure, restarting you at frequent check points. "inFAMOUS"? I don't get it. It's the idea that no matter who you play you become FAMOUS, but it's a choice of becoming FAMOUS in the stereotypical sense, a hero, or inFAMOUS as in being evil. Technically they aren't breaking street dates, they are following the rules that come with postal orders. That is why they've never been in trouble before. I'm usually not one to run through a game again after beating it, so at first I was kinda dreading playing it on the evil side...but after playing for a while and seeing how much more destructive the evil powers are, the game felt new and I found myself having more fun than my first playthrough.
