Allrite I finally am givin up. Even though I don't see the need for a digital camera for the next couple of years but what the hell. I will be going to Delhi in the next couple of days and have a few bucks lying around and am thinking of getting a digital camera. It will be nice to boast around :p I called up a few camera dealers in Delhi (I live in a village compared to you all abroad...India sucks in this regard :() and for my budget, I can get a Canon A60 or A70. So i wanted to know if these are cameras worth getting. I mean will I be able to take some of the quality pics I see in this thread, I am an absolutely noob when it comes to photography and can't tell my a's from my b's, but I am a fast learner ;). Please give in your suggestions and also mention what accessories I should get with the cam. The camera from Delhi will only have what comes as standard accessories. So please let me know what else I should get.

the pictures i re-posted a few pages back were taken with my canon a70. its quality for being a a mid-priced camera

As i understand, the only difference between the A60 and A70 is their MegaPixel Rating. Other than that they're basically the same. So if the price difference is under 2-3K (INR. 50INR = 1USD), I will get the A70.

What about accessories? The dealer I spoke to is willing to give me a 128MB Memory Card with the camera. What else should I get?

Sumit

you should get some NiMH batteries for it right away and a recharger (if you dont have one of those already).

The normal batteries it comes with wont last very long at all.

if you're getting that 128 mem card thrown in with it, you're set. i have a 128 card. at the largest image size and best picture quality settings, i can take something like 140 pics.

/edit.. oh perhaps a carrying case as well to protect it during travel?

/edit #2.. remember, we're talking photography here, not computers. you dont need to go nuts with memory card size. save yourself some money. if 128mb can take 140 pics at the best settings, and you can delete pics you dont want on the spot, you need to ask yourself if you actually need more than that? i haven't even come close to filling this card yet, and i was snapping pics at every little stupid thing.

Ok then....its set :)

Thanks for Keldyn for making me get this even though I don't need one  ................. j.k. :p

I have been folowwing this thread for a long time now and hopefull, by next week or so, I would have qualified for the "official money wasted club" :p

Will post my pics when I am done....even though I suck at this :(

Thanks all....keep posting ;)

Sumit

bro you need to post some more pics so we can see all these fancy lenses in action :)

hehe, i only own the 2. the last 3 were just what i plan to buy, but it's like $5000 for all 3.

i actually have a press pass for a concert on the 7th. that's why i got the 50 f1.8 cuz it's fast enough for low light situations.

the 18-55 is just the standard kit lens, nothing fancy :)

I'd pick up additional memory cards when they are on sale. I blew through a couple when I was on vacation. Also get another battery and car charger. The car charger has come in very handy. Get an AC adapter too.

Hey you guys that own the Canon A60 or A70, I'm considering buying one of these cameras.

I definitely should get rechargable batteries and a recharger I'm assuming, how much time do you guys normally get out of your batteries? Should I get two sets of recharables, or will one be enough? Thanks for any help.

Your batteries will drain when they are left in the camera, so either take the battery out when the camera isn't being used or keep a spare ready. A battery came with my s400, then I got another one as part of the package I bought, and now there is a 3rd one that came with the ac adapter.

Make sure you get a nice padded case for your camera so it doesn't break from being bounced around.

I'll definintely get the case, and a couple of extra sets of rechargables. That is the one thing I liked about the Kodak models I looked at, is it has a rechargable pack and I could just throw it on the dock and not worry about it. But it seems from what I've read and seen here everyone likes the Canon models a lot better, and the picture quality does look really good.

is there any way to use a Canon Digital camera and access the CF card, and save files (zip, exe and the works) to the card. and later to retrieve them?

some type of 3rd party app?

Interesting idea. Kind of like a mini flash drive? To be honest I don't know although it would not surprise me were it possible.

Yep you can do this with almost all ( get out clause just incase ) camera media be that XD, SD, CF etc etc

I generally use the 128mb XD card and my camera as a portable file storage unit for anything from Word or Acrobat Docs to small programs.. saves using CDs and i've been using this for a while now.

one thing I have noticed is this really only works well on XP machines as you can just use XPs Mass Storage Driver so plugging in your camera using the USB cable into a XP machine loads the MSD so in theory you can just plug your camera into any XP machine and upload and download data.

    • Microsoft AI boss no longer believes that AI will replace human workers by David Uzondu Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI, recently took back his statements concerning white-collar jobs that he gave to the Financial Times in an interview made back in February, where he claimed that AI would replace office workers within 12 to 18 months. On Monday's episode of The Verge's Decoder, Suleyman recast the technology as more like a helpmate than a tool designed to take over your job. He explained that smaller office duties will "increasingly become digitized, automated" as people generate more digital materials. During the discussion, Suleyman emphasized a "very important distinction" between "tasks" and "jobs" to clarify his previous claims. He argued that his earlier comments only referred to individual actions that people perform at their desks. Suleyman used to work for DeepMind, the research lab he co-founded in 2010 alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, before he left in 2022 to establish Inflection AI and build an empathetic digital assistant. Microsoft hired him in March 2024 to lead its newly formed "Microsoft AI" division, placing him in charge of consumer products like Copilot, Bing, and Edge. His February comments also detailed plans for Microsoft to achieve self-sufficiency with a $140 billion infrastructure budget to train frontier models, predicting that creating a customized AI will soon feel like creating a podcast or a new blog: The 41-year-old is not the only AI executive who's softened his "AI will replace you" stance. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, last month used X to push back against employment panic by arguing that his startup builds tools to assist humans rather than build replacements. He had previously garnered backlash by suggesting that many modern office roles that AI might replace did not qualify as "real work" in the first place, at least when you compare desk jobs to physical, historical labor like farming.

    • Meta will now use data from outside businesses to personalize AI responses by David Uzondu In an update that's rolling out globally (except in a handful of countries), Meta will use your data from outside businesses to personalize your AI responses and your primary feeds. Meta already utilizes your shopping activity to target ads, but the company now plans to expand this tracking to personalize other "parts of your experience" like feed algorithms and AI assistant chats. The company is replacing the two settings ("Your activity off Meta technologies" and "Activity from other businesses") that currently let you disconnect off-platform activity with a single, renamed setting called Activity from other businesses. If you don't want Meta to manipulate your feed and AI responses using your outside history, you can just turn the Activity from other businesses setting off in your account settings. This toggle resides within your Accounts Center, applying your choice to every connected profile. Turning this off will not stop companies from sending your data to Meta. The company will still collect your web interactions, but it only uses them to train products, while still accessing external accounts you connect. When The Verge spoke to Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez, the representative said that this update will exclude several locations at launch, including the European region, the UK, Brazil, Thailand, South Africa, Turkey, South Korea, Ecuador, Nigeria, and Kenya. The new update comes at a time when the social media giant is recovering from a major PR disaster involving generative AI. Last week, there was a huge security issue on Instagram where attackers figured out a way to trick Meta AI into handing over account ownership (even if the victim had 2FA enabled). Some of the affected accounts include the dormant Obama White House profile, cosmetics brand Sephora, the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, and security researcher Jane Manchun Wong. Internally, the company also had to scale back plans on its Model Capability Initiative (MCI), an employee-monitoring program designed to train corporate AI models by recording worker keystrokes and screen activity, after employees raised privacy concerns and complained about severe battery life drain.
