I don't know if some of you guys have noticed this but there are actually (2) distinct places to download the Windows 7 RTM from on both MSDn and Technet.

from the regular download link (from Microsoft) and from the top downloads section (From Akaimai global CDN).

The Akaimai way should be faster for most people. If you are getting low speeds you should really try the Akamai side. Much faster.

50-200KB from MS since the load has kicked in vs 2MBps from akamai.

Can someone be more clear with this? I checked it out but can't find the said link >:\

Well for all those wondering I downloaded the x64 Ultimate ISO and installed it on a fresh disk. The license agreement that came up said Windows 7 Ultimate and there was nowhere to change versions during the initial install. After the install was complete and during 1st boot it asked for a key I tried putting in a Home Premium key and it said that it was the wrong key for the SKU installed. Put in an Ultimate key and no problem. So there ya go.. that was my experience anyway.

Thanks for confirming that. I figured as much. Will just wait for a proper universal ISO.

Wow, what a difference. I hit 2.5MB/s at some points, and no lower than 1.3MB/s. It's steady between 1 and 2MB/s, THANKS!

Yeah, like I said, it's cool and, whatever, but why ask whether the build number is the same? The build number for the technet download is (gasp) the same build number that went gold last month.

Because they are afraid of getting smacked in the face when it turns out that Microsoft ninja'd them and released a different build number and would screw them out of updates and whatnot. too bad. I was hoping for that.

Click on The 'Downloads' section.

Under the Downloads section at the top there is a Top downloads link.

click on that. Then you will download the akamai client. You should be able to get faster speeds through that.

I can't for the life of me figure out where to find the link to download via Akaimai Download manager. I click on top download section, and would end up getting this:

Top Downloads contains certain newly available downloads to support higher initial download traffic. After the download demand has peaked, these are then made available with the rest of TechNet Subscriber Downloads.

And has nothing else.

still getting it at 178kb. using MSdl manager.

There are (2) download managers.

The Microsoft one and the Akamai one. You want the Akamai one for the faster speeds.

You get to the Akamai download manager by clicking on the 'Downloads' section at the top.

Under that section there is a 'Top downloads' link. Click on that.

That link will lead you to the Akamai manager.

Um....getting this:

If you were a TechNet Plus Subscriber, you would be able to initiate downloads of select products directly from here.

Not a TechNet Plus subscriber? Find out more.

Even though I am signed in and downloading using the MS one.

As I already said, download from the following link: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscri...s/dd692862.aspx.

Just use the links that are there and you'll be using Akamai ;) .

Oh and you need to be signed in with your Live ID, of course :p . Because the message you posted makes me think of that you aren't logged in.

The Akamai one is so much faster becaues it's riding on top of Akamai's global CDN instead of going just back to where ever Microsoft is hosting the content. Also, it tries to pick a location that is physically closest to you greatly distributing the traffic and generally better experience when traffic is extremely heavy.

Release a different build number than was already announced? Why would that make sense? OEM's got RTM the day it was announced, AFAIK. I'm sure they would only need to change a couple of files and leave the version number the same before intentionally leaking to wz0r. That being said, wz0r had to get it from somewhere, and it would be funny if they intentionally leaked a blacklisted version to that and other sites. Not like it would matter though, because it would only be a matter of time before someone figured it out and got the legit, illegal copy.

Microsoft should consider distributing this through the Bittorrent protocol to increase download speeds. Look at how fast WOW patches get downloaded.

Then everyone would get the download, including those who shouldn't, like the people who don't pay for access to MSDN/Technet.

Microsoft has many more customers than WOW has players.... Bittorrent I really don't think is a viable option for them to distribute their software.

I really don't think any company would use Bittorrent in it's current form to distribute major releases of software. At least I haven't seen one do it yet outside of the Open Source community.

But BitTorrent usual equals downloading illegal content, and I guess Microsoft doesn't want to be associated with that :p .

Anyway, I agree with you. But the problem with BitTorrent is the possibility that nobody will seed or upload, just download.

Maybe they should develop some kind of P2P distribution service to use for that, like BitTorrent. Who knows if it is ever going to happen :) .

This screenshot is exactly what I am getting when I try to do that. I am signed in, and everything, and obviously tried both FF and IE.

Same here. Tried on Server 2008 with IE8, Server 2003 with IE8, Windows 7 RC with IE8, Windows XP Pro SP3 with IE7, all with the same results.

That method of downloading is only available for so long, after which you have to use the Microsoft FTM. This method has been exhausted I'm afraid :/

If you keep trying it will come back :)

This.

this is especially true when you'er downloading an operating system. It's more than likely that hte person will burn to the DVD and immediately start the installation, thus not being able to seed.

    • Here is the new Surface Laptop Ultra wallpaper in high resolution by Taras Buria Earlier this week, Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra, its brand-new high-end laptop powered by NVIDIA's brand-new RTX Spark processor. As usual, Microsoft gives each new device a unique wallpaper, and the Surface Laptop Ultra is no exception. While the device is not publicly available yet, somebody has already extracted its wallpaper, giving everyone a chance to get a piece of the upcoming laptop in its full-resolution glory. The Surface Laptop Ultra has a very dark, abstract wallpaper that resembles the stock wallpapers in Windows Server, albeit with much less color. Having this dark, grim wallpaper highlights the laptop's mini-LED display and its ability to cut off parts of the screen's backlight to achieve OLED-like black levels. However, if you also like light wallpapers, we made a white version by simply inverting its colors. You can download both wallpapers below (click the image, right-click it, and select "Save as"): The Surface Laptop Ultra is expected to launch later this year. Microsoft is not revealing full details yet, including the price. However, Microsoft confirmed up to 1 petaflop of AI performance and RTX 5070-level of GPU performance. The heart of the laptop has up to 20 CPU cores and 6,144 GPU cores. Additionally, Microsoft and NVIDIA boast high CPU efficiency for all-day battery life. As for the display, it is a 15-inch mini-LED display with a pixel density of 262 ppi and a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits. Of course, not everyone needs this amount of power, and certainly not everyone can afford it. For those who need a more affordable device, Microsoft is also preparing the next-generation Surface Pro powered by the Snapdragon X2 Elite processor. Weeks ahead of the announcement, details about this computer were leaked by a retailer. Do you like the Surface Laptop Ultra's stock wallpaper? Share your thoughts in the comments. • From all that I've read on the subject--not that much, really--it looks to me like companies and parents are trying to protect themselves from children using their parents accounts to run up giant bills, sometimes in the thousands of dollars, and the first the parents know about it is when they get sued... Internet companies have been sued for tailoring their ads to children, which is kind of old news. My belief is that policing starts at home with the parents, and the reason that so many laws that can't be enforced are being passed is because parents are eschewing their responsibilities, claiming not enough time, not enough knowledge, etc. Giving kids cell phones sans Internet connectivity is a good place to start--confine Internet activity to PCs in the home that the parents regulate. My kids are all grown and gone, I'm happy to say... They have their own kids to worry about.

    • BTW DXVK is also available on Windows and offers similar benefits like on Linux when it comes to performance, at least in some titles. The Raceroom racing sim for example even offers DXVK as one of its officially supported options and it can achieve ridiculous improvements in certain situations, like quite literally doubling (or more) the framerates
