Okay, so I have a couple of questions:

1) Setup and Internet Connections

During the setup it said this: "Allow google's location service to collect anonymous location data. Collection will occur even when no applications are running." and then "Use My Location for Google searches and other google services.". Now this is great but will it override the settings I have to keep Wi-Fi/Internet connections off? Basically, I don't want my phone to be randomly connecting (via wi-fi or 3G) to the internet without me knowing about it.

Is there a way to ensure this won't happen?

2) Setting up IMAP access to WLM

Tried to set up access to my Windows Live Hotmail account, but it said the servers were un-reachable, then it said it doesn't support SSL. Is the latter right?

3) Can you remove default applications?

For instance, the STOCK and FLICKR applications I will never use so would prefer them to be deleted. I tried forcing the application to stop, but the "uninstall" button was still greyed out. Am I just stuck with them?

Thanks

4) Also, in addition, is there a way I can use my Hotmail account with IMAP access?

I just want the phone and server to be the same.

1) If you disable wireless and mobile internet, no it won't connect.

2 & 4) Depends on your Android version 2.1, no. 2.2 yes. On 2.2 download an app called "Improved Email" and you can have it sync both ways with you Hotmail account.

3) No, not unless you flash a generic ROM or a custom ROM (which will require rooting).

I have recently started using the HTC Desire and I love it. The only sore point is the poor battery life. I am using Froyo on the official HTC ROM.

I read up on this issue on the net and found some tips. But they dont seem to help much. I have already turned off auto-sync, bluetooth, GPS, etc and switch on wifi only when needed. But still there is no improvement in battery life. It hardly lasts 20hrs! Is there no solution to this problem?

I was reading Desire HD and Z specifications on gsmarena and found out that they have 1230mAH and 1400mAH batteries respectively. When a 1400mAH battery is insufficient even on Desire how are even lower capacity batteries going to work for more powerful models? Why has HTC given less powerful batteries on newer models? My OmniaII had a 1500mAH battery and it would last me almost 2 days with wifi being on almost all the time!

Another query I have about the Desire is that I have installed free browser (Opera) from the market. Now when I click on a link in the original browser it asks me which app I want to use to complete the action. There is also a setting below to make the selected action default. Now suppose I choose Opera as my default browser and later uninstall it, in which app would weblinks open? Same case with the default messaging app and Handcent SMS app. Further, if I later on install another browser or messaging app would I be asked again which app I want to be used by default?

It's pretty easy, you go into Settings > Applications > Manage > All, then you simply select the application from the list and press "Clear Defaults" and it will remove it as default. If you uninstall Opera, it will return to using your previous default.

As for the battery issue... If you use a custom ROM, a lot of them have good scaling options in their kernels that throttle the speed of the CPU when you have your screen off, which saves some battery, if it's that much of a concern to you then i'd recommend rooting and installing a ROM like LeeDrOiD, with the smarta** CPU gouverner. If you choose not to root, you have the obvious things like disabling wifi, GPS, and bluetooth when you don't need them, you can also turn the screen off automatic brightness and dim it.

As for HTC's battery choices... Hard to know for certain without trying the devices and seeing how they are for battery life. I was lucky enough to get an AMOLED desire, so it's a little more efficient.

I just read this thread from start to finish. It's odd looking at someone go from being the happiest new phone owner in the world to the most frustrated, so much so he smashes the phone to bits.

My favourite thread on Neowin ever.

:o

I did the same with my Nokia N97. It really was a piece of crap. I wager that the HTC Desire is miles better though and the bloke simply didn't understand it.

@Subject Delta

Thanks for clearing the 'default app' issue. As for installing a custom ROM, well I have absolutely no knowledge of this issue. So I am afraid of screwing things up. Where do I learn about this? My guess is xda.

How do I determine what type of screen is there on my Desire? Whether its AMOLED or S-LCD?

@testman

somebody smashed his own phone? whats the story? hard to go through all the pages.

Proud owner of HTC Desire from today :punk: For about 12 years I've only had Nokia phones (e51 was my last one), and this is my first touchscreen/Android phone - I must say I have a bit of hard time adjusting to it, it has soooooooooo many options to tweak and play with :)

Anyway.... I have some issues with the default email app - I've set it up exactly the way it's set up on my Outlook, and I can send email but I don't receive anything :( All settings are 100% right (for pop/smtp servers), and I really don't know where is the problem.

Rooting guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044

Screen type: Power off the phone completely, then hold the volume down button and press the power button. The phone will go into recovery mode. The type of screen will be displayed there. If you got your Desire recently, then in all probability it is SLCD. If you were an early adopter like me, it will be AMOLED.

  • 1 month later...

im currently using redux 1.0 which is a gingerbread rom as well. cant believe how much faster than the fat desire hd rom it is. i even start to like the keyboard more and more by day. now i just need a good and working news widget. scrollable news is gr8 but it just wont update (neither automatically nor manually) my engadget rss feed.

    • yeah it seems to be Edge only. The dialog buttons work as expected in Chrome and Firefox. The phone is using Android 16 (OneUI 8.5) and Edge version  149.0.4022.53
    • I'm not aware of this issue, but to help the other guys.  What version of Android are you using? Did you try a different browser? To see if Edge is the issue here.
    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article? Here is a better article so you actually know what is going on and answers questions you had in other comments --> https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/05/speed-boosting-low-latency-profile-is-one-of-the-improvements-coming-to-windows-11/ It is unclear if one will be able to disable the new profile at this point but I am not seeing any reason why one would.
