For Apple Followers, It's a Matter of Faith

The thing is ok for Apple lock other out but I bet if Microsoft do... people bitching ANTITRUST! and the EU going to have a field trip with it.

Take a look at the Browsers Ballot screen, apparent it's not ok for MS to bundle IE in Windows but it's ok for Apple to bundle Safari in Mac OSX and they practically locked down iPhone with Safari.

Apple doesn't have a monopoly so if even if they suddenly decided to actually force people to use Safari on Mac's it couldn't be an abuse of one. IE was bundled for free and later built in to an OS when MS an effective monopoly on desktop OS's and when the competition were dependant on being able to sell their browser. Safari was released as a application that can be deleted/removed while even now IE can at best only be disabled (and you could not originally do that until later versions of IE).

As for the iPhone, it's a smart phone not a computer so it's not exactly the same and there's Opera for the iPhone anyway.

I like their laptops. Their desktops are OK. I don't like their mobile devices

The amount of times I've been called a Mac fanboy (or worse) simply because I own a MacBook Pro is getting tiring. There are some nuts for sure, but I doubt the majority of Mac users are like this.

It's a simple fact. Mac users go nuts when you say anything bad about Apple and Macs because they've paid a premium for their products and are desperately seeking justification for that spent money. So if you say, "Hey, you know, that Apple stuff is the same or even worse in some things than PCs or Android or whatever" which is in fact true in plenty of cases, you will get most Mac users foaming because they in fact believe they have bought a superior computer/devices if it comes from Apple and by telling them that device has flaws seriously bugs them because they have to be better than others, that's why they paid money, that's why it looks nice..and they go into frenzy..

I mean look at it.. Apple as a company is riding on that perception.. They make ads that mock everyone, they insult everyone who doesn't use Apple products and they actually lie about pretty much anything etc.. it's no wonder Apple fans are the same.

That's the short of it. It's in fact simple psychology, nothing else.

Their defense usually comes back as "Oh, Windows users are also fanatics etc" and now they are saying "Android users are fanatics" which is really total nonsense.. I have not seen any user that talks about Windows and Microsoft products constantly like Apple cult followers do.. The only discussion/defending about Windows comes when Apple fanatics start reciting Apple and Jobs' talking points that have absolutely no connection with reality and are completely idiotic again stemming back to the fact that you have to defend your purchase and truly BELIEVE that what you paid 3 times more than a PC is so much better that it was worth it and you weren't suckered into it.

And btw, unlike Apple fans, most "normal" people see that companies are not awesome always.. Microsoft can be evil, they did some bad things.. so we criticize it harshly. Normal people don't defend bad things because they need justification for their spent money. Others make really bad things.. Nobody is innocent in corporate world, but only with Apple fans.. Apple is really always right, they are never wrong, they have done nothing wrong ever, there's always some justification for every bad and greedy thing they do. It's really hilarious as much as it is sad.

The point behind users defending Windows or Android is because they do more.. they give really people, developers and others, choice. It's a better approach for everyone because we are not dependent on one company making hardware and software and living by their rules.. we have software companies, we have hardware companies, we have multiple choices for every taste. Something that with Apple fanatics is totally unacceptable. If you don't think Apple stuff is the bestest in the world you are an idiot.

I can't name how many times Apple cult fanatics have told me how no PC case or PC this or that looks as nice as Apple stuff.. They are completely nuts and so self-serving and truly BELIEVE that Apple stuff they own is the best and everyone else who says otherwise is so wrong and uncool and really a PC or Android fanboy.

Now you can definitely draw some lines here with religion. The same goes for religious folks. They believe that their own religion is the RIGHT one, so much they will into war for it and kill people for it etc.. It's actually very similar to the Cult of Apple.

And for those who ask.. why is everyone so up Apple's ass about antenna, about any issue that Apple hardware has.. It's very simple.. THEY BROUGHT IT ON THEMSELVES. When you insult everyone else and constantly harp about how you are the best, magical, fantastic, revolutionary and nobody else thought of it etc, you will get your ass ripped apart with every small issue. And they deserve it.

Wow... Just wow... I don't even know where to begin!

Hm, I dot usually contribute to debates because I fail at making decent points and generally I sound stupid. But here's my point.

Apple's products are great, good quality and look good. The thing I dislike is the company and how they have this attitude about them when speaking to the press. It just makes me sick.

I suppose that even though with this attitude they can get away with what they say as such they keep doing it.

A perfect example of "How the minions use reversed labels to trample the Apple uprising" as I illustrated on the previous page. I did not expect however such a display of self confession and jumping out of the closet. I guess I owe you a big thank you for giving us all a perfect example for the illustration?

Wow, you guys really had a lot to get off your chests, didn't you?

Here's my take on it: There are nutters in the World. These people can't be reasoned with. Some of them enjoy anything that is made by Apple, some of them enjoy anything that is made with maple syrup. Some nutters enjoy turning on other nutters and pointing out that they're morons, when ultimately - since nutters cannot be reasoned with - nothing is going to change, and the nutters that enjoy pointing out other nutters are just going to come away more angry than before. And what has it achieved? Nothing. The nutters are still going to buy anything that Apple sells, and the other nutters are going to get more angry about this.

The next question is, "Why get angry?" Is their choice in blindly following a company without any consideration for other options in some way harming you? Of course it's not, but being a nutter that can't be reasoned with, you will continue to bash people for their own nutterish tendencies. Here's the other thing: you nutters that enjoy bashing the nutters for their choices actively seem to seek the nutters out. How hard is it to look at a thread, identify that there are nutters in it and, rather than get in to a fight that neither side will win, decide to close the tab? Or hey, if there is something of merit that you want to respond to then do so, but ignore the nutters and their useless comments.

As for my take on Apple products, I own an iPod Touch and a Macbook Pro. I got the Macbook Pro because I fancied a change, and I got the iPod Touch because it was a birthday present. I'm happy with each of them, but would I buy a Macbook Pro in the future? Maybe if I had the cash to splash out on, but I think my next purchase will be a gaming laptop. Basically, the point of this paragraph is just an attempt to show that not everyone that owns Mac products are morons blindly lapping up anything Steve Jobs sends in to his stores...

I fail to understand why people get so enamored with their products. It's just a computer. It's the same boring crap everyone else has. It's just a phone. Everyone has one. It's just a portable music player. It plays music. OMG CREAM IN MY PANTS VERSION 29 JUST GOT RELEASED AND NOW IT'S 0.001mm THINNER!

Basically, the point of this paragraph is just an attempt to show that not everyone that owns Mac products are morons blindly lapping up anything Steve Jobs sends in to his stores...

No offense, but I think that you're a nutter for thinking that this needed to be pointed out.

This is coming from a person that hates Apple's and Job's arrogance and owns an iTouch (yeah, I said it) for the last three years.

No offense, but I think that you're a nutter for thinking that this needed to be pointed out.

Eh, better to be safe than sorry. I bet if I hadn't written that down then someone would have jumped on it and said something along the lines of being a fanboy. Either way, I'm not fussed

Well here is my take on the matter.

Blind Defending:

I do see a lot of people defending a product that they havepurchased, but not because of blind faith, but because they don?t or didn?thave the issue reported by the masses. This causes the person to be critical of the reports and forum poststhat they see and here. Those whodo have problems, obviously voice their opinions. Is it wrong for them to notagree with the masses, maybe, but as others said it?s human nature to justifyregardless of reasoning and they shouldn?t be considered an idiot because ofthis.

A Must Have Product:

Why do Apple users seem to always stand in line all nightlong to pick up the latest phone? Seriously, this question gets asked? It?s considered the hottest deviceon the market (in most consumers opinion, certainly not mine). You will alwayshave your users who want an upgrade, those who are attempting to make a quickbuck by re-selling it on ebay and those who just have to have the latest intechnology. This behavior has beengoing on forever. Take when Halo 2came out(first thing that came to mind, with all the people standing outsidewaiting for it). And what aboutany gaming system for that matter? Granted the turn-a-round time is longer inbetween sales, but it is the same principle. Especially when a company owns thesoftware and hardware, it makes the release more appealing.

Apple, A Closed System:

Apple is a closed system, but because they want to controlthe experience (and financial gain, like any company). This also adds to theexcitement of those who want a new device (as previously stated). I see their policies no different fromthat of Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo. The only difference between them in regards to a closed system is thatyou cannot install OSX on non-EFI (well, non-apple) hardware. Would I like to see better support forthird parties from Apple, sure who wouldn?t. But the idea behind Apple is everything just works. Well, it just works because you buy allof their components, so it damn well better. If you compare Apple devices to the Playstation you can seethe similarities in their business model. Each has their own proprietary operating system, own proprietarycomponents, their own proprietary peripherals and a controller app store. Actually, this is the same businessmodel as Xbox. Yes, are the twofundamentally different, of course one is a personal computer while the otheris a gaming machine. However, it?sabout their business model and keeping a closed gap on hardware and softwaresales while controlling the overall expierence.

Cost:

Why this always comes up is beyond me. Yes, Apple products tend to costmore. Sometimes significantly morefor a seemingly similar product. I honestly have no problem with peoplecomplaining about this, but really keep it to yourselves. The consumer knewwhat they wanted or knew of alternate options. It was their decision. I personally would never purchase a PC,not because I don?t like them, but because I would rather build it myself.

I have purchased an Apple product, the mac mini almost ayear ago. The hardware was sufficientfor what I needed, and so was the size/form factor. Could I have purchased andbuilt my own, sure but now I have a warranty, sleek design and a new experience(as I wanted a unix like shell, and Microsoft office support).

Conclusion:

There are end users out there that blindly purchase aproduct because of a name, but I certainly don?t consider it cult like, nor doI think every mac user is an isheep. It really is no different than someone who only buys GM cars. You havethese types of consumers for every product and that will never end. Perhapsthis stereotype is more predominant because it has been a rivalry in the techcommunity since their very existence. Would I only buy Apple products, no. Will I make a purchase to ensure compatibility andsuitability, yes.

I did not expect however such a display of self confession and jumping out of the closet. I guess I owe you a big thank you for giving us all a perfect example for the illustration?

Boz - a Mac owner himself - is turning his obsessive and irrational hate against Apple into a faith of its own, trying to spread the word around on the Neowin forums. Looking at his rants it probably won't be long before something really pops and we'll see a suicide attack on a local Apple Store.

Having so much frustration towards any company is irrational in my opinion. Whether he substantiated all of his points is questionable since I've read more than enough counter arguments. Not to mention the fact other companies can be blamed for similar practices Apple is guilty of as well, but for whatever reason that almost never comes up in his rants. It's basically always a one-way street.

I'm not frustrated at all and certainly not irrational (especially since I studied consumer psychology as part of my college degree in marketing so I know exactly what drives Apple fans).. I'm just annoyed when someone tries to defend them which is usually coming from Apple fanboys which are majority of people owning something Apple unfortunately. As for Apple and Steve Jobs, well that's obvious he is a lying, sleazy, salesman scumbag. Of course he has charisma, but everything he says and does is done with a purpose in trying to make them sound as something they really are not.

Apple as a company is the greediest, most screwed up company in the tech world. That title belonged to Microsoft for a while but Apple was under the radar because they were super small. Now when they have grown more, they have shown they are 100 times worse than Microsoft, or anyone else. There's no question about that. That's why they keep everything closed up. They want to exploit users they manage to suck into the Apple platform. That's what's disingenuous about them and why I hate them with passion.

I own Apple hardware because I buy a product, not philosophy they are selling. The reason I hate them is because how they are and what their model is, and because they are lying sacks of ass, not because of their products per se.

They have potential to truly be something different. To open up enough to be consumer friendly and still maintain a level of control over their platform and not try to rip me and anyone who buys their stuff for every cent they can. They already own the market with industrial design aspect to their hardware.. They have ok software for the most part (mainstream accessible). They have no need to lock everything in. They do it because they don't want to compete on a regular level but have to forcefully imprison users/customers with their money so they have no other choice down the road but to use their platform, their hardware and play under their rule so they have to buy mini-dongles, overpay sometimes double the price of graphic cards that only work on Apple hardware and crap like that.

What's irrational is defending them, or any company that's like them for that matter because you like their products so you turn a blind eye and think that it's not a big deal. It's a huge deal!

    • WhatsApp is getting usernames, and you can reserve your preferred one now by Fiza Ali Sharing your phone number isn't always something you want to do, especially with people you've just met. Whether it's someone from a class, a local community group, or a sports team chat, handing over your number can feel like giving away more personal information than necessary. That's exactly the problem WhatsApp is trying to solve with its upcoming usernames feature. The company has announced that users can now reserve a unique WhatsApp username ahead of the feature's wider rollout later this year. Once usernames become available, they'll let people connect without revealing their phone numbers. It's a change that makes a lot of sense for group chats. Right now, everyone in the group can see your phone number. With usernames enabled, that won't necessarily be the case when someone contacts you for the first time. WhatsApp says it's opening username reservations early because more than three billion people use the app, meaning plenty of people are likely to want the same usernames. Reserving one now gives users a better chance of securing the name they actually want before the feature launches more broadly. If your preferred username is already taken, WhatsApp will also offer a built-in username generator to suggest available alternatives. The feature isn't only aimed at individual users. Creators, businesses, and organisations will be able to claim the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook, making it easier to keep a consistent identity across Meta's apps. Furthermore, privacy is a big part of how WhatsApp is introducing usernames. There won't be a public directory where people can browse or search for usernames. Instead, people will need to know your exact username before they can start a conversation with you. Additionally, users can also choose to enable a username key, which adds another layer of control by requiring people to enter that key before sending a message. Once the feature rolls out, people who choose to use a username will no longer have their phone number shown when messaging a person or business for the first time. If you want to reserve a username, make sure you're running the latest version of WhatsApp, then head to Settings > Account > Username. The tech giant says usernames will roll out gradually over the coming months, and users will receive an in-app notification when the feature becomes available in their country.
    • When I think about a network, there are really two aspects, the hardware and the wiring. So here is what I would do for both. Wiring: Use Cat6A for the patch panel, outlets, and all structured cables (cables installed in walls). Run plenty of Wireless Access Point (WAP) cables, as a general rule, assume a signal can only pass through 2-3 walls and can't pass through a floor (that is conservative, but trust me on this if you want strong WiFi)  Cat6 patch cables are fine for now if you don't plan to run 10gig, those are easy to replace later if needed. Run OS2 single-mode fiber to anywhere you think you may have a server or sub-switch. (yes, single-mode for everything on a small network, don't mess with multimode unless you have entire racks of servers and that minor module cost and power savings will matter). If you really want to future proof, also run fiber to any high density WAP locations, it is likely that WiFi 8 WAPs will push the limits of 10g. Run 6-12 pairs of single-mode fiber between your MDF and the building's MDF, even if you only need 1 or 2 pairs now, those extra pairs will pay off down the road. Hardware: (its easy to say "get all the features incase you need them", so instead of futureproofing, I am going to take approach of suggesting areas worth investing in, and areas you can save money). Don't overspend thinking you need every feature on every port. You don't need 10g on every port, you don't need PoE on every port. Don't overspend on redundancy either, unless you are ready to buy two of everything, don't waste money buying two of some things and not others. Dual power supplies are worthwhile, but probably not HA or multi-path redundancy.  Get 1 "distribution layer" switch that your router/firewall will connect to as well as all your access layer switches below. This should be a 10g switch with a combination of copper and SPF ports and should be a fully managed switch. Given that you said it is a small network, I suggest also using that distribution layer switch for servers and WAPs, meaning it will need PoE. Speaking of wireless, get good professional tri-band WAPs, and either turn on the band stirring options, or limit 2.4 to an IoT only SSID. This will provide a solid WiFi capable nearly everything but the highest of bandwidth clients...you could even consider skipping wiring workstations depending on usage. Access layer switch for workstations and printers can be cheaper switches, 2.5g is a good sweet spot between price and future proofing, but even 1g is fine for most individual clients (the kind that could probably be fine on WiFi). You can consider saving a little on access layer switches by only getting 1 PoE switch for whatever needs it (remember your WAPs are connecting to the distribution switch, not here), and non-PoE for your workstations, because desk phones are falling out of favor. You can also save money here by not buying managed switches if you don't need them--but really do some soul searching there, if you go this route, then anything that isn't on your workstation VLAN would either need to be connected to the distribution switch, or its own switch. Also, don't feel like you need a fancy fabric stacking switches for your access layer, that is the point of the higher-end distribution layer, to remove the need for things like that at this level. Home Hardware: I'm realizing the above assumed an office setting, if this if for your house and home lab then the above still applies, but you'll probably want everything managed and PoE, just because, but you probably also don't need multiple access layer switches. if your total port count is below 24, just skip separating distribution layer and access layer and just get one nice switch with the features you want. For home use, don't worry about home running every device to the main switch, there is nothing wrong with running sub-switches for your media areas and office, those essentially become your access layer, just look for sub-switches with a 10g uplink so sharing bandwidth isn't an issue.
    • Google Meet brings Gemini note-taking to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers by Karthik Mudaliar Google's Gemini-powered "Take notes for me" feature inside Google Meet is now available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The features work on Google Meet for web as well as on mobile, and Google says that subscribers can use it for meetings they host in many supported languages. As the name suggests, "Take notes for me" allows Gemini to listen to a meeting, generate a summary, identify action items, and save the notes as a Google Doc in the user’s Drive. After the meeting, the organizer receives an email recap with the summary and action items, while the notes can also be attached to the related Calendar event depending on the meeting setup and sharing settings. The feature isn't automatically turned on for everyone, though. Google says that all meeting participants are notified when note-taking is turned on, and users can start it from the pencil icon in Meet or enable it for future calls through Meet’s meeting records settings. For work or school accounts, administrators can also control whether the feature is available and may require explicit participant consent for note-taking, recording, or transcription features. The feature first launched back in 2024, when it was available just for selected Workspace users. Over the years, Google added refinements and more options, including the ability to enable it when scheduling meetings via Google Calendar. Google's support docs say that the feature currently supports English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, but only one language at a time. Meetings with multiple spoken languages are not currently supported, and Google recommends using the tool for meetings between 15 minutes and eight hours. The new feature makes Google Meet closer to its rivals that have AI tools already built in. Microsoft Teams has recently started offering Copilot and intelligent recap features that summarize meetings, surface highlights, and help with follow-ups, while Zoom’s AI Companion can also generate meeting summaries from desktop and mobile meetings.

Python Bindings: Improved translation of primary object (Account, Transaction, Split, etc.) so that they can be treated as normal Python objects. This is accomplished with SWIG magic so no existing code is obsoleted. Python Bindings: Better conversion of GLists to Python lists. Python Bindings: Destroy the QofSession in the Python Session dtor to prevent leaving the database locked. [engine] Add first-class online_id accessors for Split and Account and make them available to Python bindings, removing the unused Transaction online_id property. Improve C++ implementation of QofBook. Correct the Doxygen doc for qof_instance_get/set_kvp. [gnc-log-replay.cpp] fix incorrect guid dump Add some Boost library requirements needed by libgnucash-guile to CMakeLists.txt so that missing feature will fail at configure time. Use Compile-time Regular Expressions instead of std::regex in gnc-filepath-utils.cpp and instead of boost::regex in the CSV importer, with the CTRE v3.11.1 header added to borrowed [gnc-filepath-utils.cpp] null check char* arguments Add ChartJS licenses. Removed AEX from list of commodities. euronext.com is now using JS based anti-webscraping. [report-core] always offer options summary in reports. This is useful to debug reports. The Add options summary option is removed because it's no longer optional. Remove remaining obsolete IMContext from sheet Fix blurry text in HiDPI offscreen-rendered widgets Add port field to database connection dialog: The convention of appending the port number after the host isn't obvious. When editing a split in the register treat the account as being changed only if it isn't the one selected before editing instead of if the user performed an edit Return immediately from qof_book_destroy if hash_of_collections is null. If qof_book_destroy is called on a QofBook* freshly created with qof_book_new (usually because it was used to create a session that now must be destroyed) it would try to empty the non-existent hash tables, crashing. Clean up Flathub metadata to solve warnings at flatpak build time. Be consistent in naming GncPluginPage and GncPluginPageRegister HTML: Remove unimplemented function declarations. [gnc-html.cpp] remove unused buggy string conversion functions Convert libgnc-html to C++ Apply -Wall -Werr -Wmissing-prototypes to C++ compilation on Windows and fix the resulting errors. • Microsoft finally launches WSL Containers in public preview by David Uzondu Microsoft has announced that WSL containers, a feature that allows developers to run Linux containers natively inside Windows without the need for Docker Desktop, is now available in public preview several weeks after Microsoft previewed it at Build 2026. To use the new container feature, you first have to install the latest pre-release version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux by running a quick update command in your terminal: wsl --update --pre-release After installing, you'd get access to the new Linux container CLI (wslc.exe) and the programmable API. Microsoft said that the CLI has a "familiar format" that matches the toolsets developers already use every day. If you know standard Docker commands, your muscle memory will translate directly to wslc.exe, which even features a built-in alias called container.exe. You can quickly run a full Ubuntu KDE desktop container by exposing ports, or pass your graphics card straight into a machine learning environment to run PyTorch workloads. Passing the --gpus all flag inside the run command instantly links your hardware. Image via Microsoft As for the API, developers can now embed Linux container operations directly inside native Windows applications without exposing the command line to users. The team integrated the API directly into MSBuild and CMake, so developers can define container steps directly in project files. Apart from bringing the CLI and API into public preview, Microsoft also said that it's working on a new default file system called virtiofs to speed up file transfer rates between Windows and Linux. Microsoft also introduced an experimental networking mode named consomme, which resolves compatibility issues with corporate VPNs by routing Linux network traffic straight through Windows. One thing to note about WSL containers is that they don't run in your standard WSL distributions; instead, every application and CLI session spawns its own lightweight Hyper-V utility VM in the background. This basically reduces the chances of one app snooping on the container of another app.
