Whilst the potato counter is going down the speed at which games are being progressed has been increased so get playing those last games people :D

Its something to do with overclocking, potato power or something.

Yep. It appears the to have doubled the power being provided.

what the hell. I had to pay 45$ and my friend 60 $ for ps3 version.

I paid $54 for the PS3 version on amazon and got a $20 credit so its about the same. I learned to wait instead of buying it off Steam with Left for Deal 2 because some stores have better prices then Steam's pre-purchas deals.

So if the game launches at midnight when the counter reaches 0, isn't that the time the game would've been released anyway even without any potato crap?

Most games as far as i recall if they release on a certain date, that usually means midnight or 0:01 of that day.

No.

It was scheduled to come out at 7AM PDT tomorrow.

Yes, all the HL series that were using steam came out at midknight or something, why i didnt take part in the marketing of potato sack, cause it was going to come out normal time regardless

So they added time to make it look like they were taking time away?

Most big games have been midnight launches anyway.

The time was defined quite awhile before the Portal 2 ARG even started...

And most big games do not have largely-used online distribution services that can be released at the push of a button, so they set a time for retailers to start selling the game. Chances are you won't be able to get Portal 2 in stores until tomorrow, but at it's current rate, it will go live on Steam before the day ends.

Name one other than HL2.....IIRC, L4D, L4D2 and other Steam releases did not launch on Steam at midnight. They usually launch around 9AM or 12PM PST on launch day.

Assuming that all the games "Reach 100%" we can save another 5 hours (if each games chops an hour off). We would need to save ~2 hours (2 games) to launch today.. depending your timezone.

According to wal-mart you can buy portal 2 now :-p

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Portal-2-PC-PC-Games/14018469

Which also oddly enough IS NOT sold in store. So that means NO midnight release at wal-mart. I find that ghey. I like the midnight runs to multiple walmarts for the one store that gets your game at midnight. I did 3 walmarts before I found a nice lady that says she specifically makes sure the games go out for Crysis 2 on the PC. heh

Basing it off pacific time (Valves time zone), we have 9 hours until the end of today.....the game launches in 9 hours from right now regardless of any more games completing (midnight release) we need 1 more game complete to actually count it as later today (otherwise it releases at midnight, which can for all intents and purposes count for tomorrow).

Now, The Ball is already at 96.7%, it will finish in the next hour or so (if even that long), everyone is focusing on Killing Floor now which is at 65%, it will complete in roughly 8 hours or so (based on how quickly the others completed and it's current rate of increase).

That is also excluding any other games completing though......since the potato counter started ticking down, if the current percent rate continues, we will be at 100% within 8 hours.

I think Portal 2 would've still released at midnight had nobody been playing the potato games, how do we even know those "cpu" numbers are accurate and not just a pretend countdown to something that was always gonna release at the time they wanted.

Games can launch at a push of a button too, think MMO's such as Cataclysm and Rift. Also bigger games with midnight launches like COD etc....I'm sure the list is endless. Any one with access to a retail copy of the game on the release date will be able to play at midnight regardless. Store owners, journalists etc. There's prob even stores who will sell it after midnight or still open at that time.

So this potato is all bulls**t false advertising. Steam owners are gaining nothing special from it.

From graphing and analyzing the number of people playing, CPU count, pixel per percentage and speed per pixel you can clearly see the bars are affected by potatoes, number of people playing and total number of owners.

There's a lot of evidence to support that we have been affecting it. You could watch the CPU numbers shift as the community changed its focus.

Not to mention you could compare the "Current CPUs" with the amount of people currently playing each game on Steam, and come up with a dead match in values (assuming they are updated at the same time).

Well it is only my opinion ofc and should be treated as such. I'm a pessimist, but some numbers being changed on a screen now and then isn't necessarily evidence on it's own in my book.

Anyway, I just hope after all this the game lasts more than a few hours to complete - lol

I've heard everything from Portal 2 campaign and co-op are twice as long as Portal (on their own, not combined), to Portal 2 campaign is 4 times as long and co-op is twice as long as the original (I've read co-op is twice the length of the original, and the campaign is twice as long as that).

I do not know which to believe....but worst case, from all values we have heard, campaign + co-op will be at LEAST 4x longer than the original.

I just called my local walmarts. Portal 2 (pc, box, and ps3) will be out and available at 12:01 midnight. The pc version may run into the issue thoe that happened with crysis 2 not being able to play till unlock time. However xbox/ps3 versions won't have this issue.

Walmart I go tonight!!!

FYI; people won't be disappointed with the length of the game.

Just completed the Leaked Copy's SP. IT was long, hard, challengine, enjoyable, and bloody funny (thanks to wheatly and his English sarcastic/witty humor). Loved it SO much, and played about 5 test chamber's of Coop with friends today. Damn, easily the best game of the year so far!

e: Ending won't disapoint, also, the ending song won't either ;).

    • I found that stability back then was really down to the motherboard manufacturer. Back then i stuck with Microstar motherboards and VIA chipsets as they were ultra reliable. Most stuff was done with jumpers and left little room for user created problems 👍
    • Yes, Scoop was created to promote Coreutils for Windows. You can still see early versions of their website on the Web Archive. It was a joke that nobody took seriously. Microsoft's implementation of Coreutils, however, are built in Rust.
    • Looks like EA's Star Wars Zero Company will be out this August by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Over a year ago, EA surprise announced that a team of former Firaxis members is working on a brand-new Star Wars game. Dubbed Zero Company, the title would have XCOM-like turn-based tactics gameplay as players manage a squad of professionals from all over the galaxy. Now, just ahead of an official announcement, it looks like the release date has leaked out. The upcoming Summer Game Fest presentation on Friday is when EA is supposed to show off the title's gameplay footage, with fans also expecting it to reveal a release date. However, the ever-reliable billbil-kun from Dealabs says they have already managed to find out when the game is coming out and what versions fans will have the option of purchasing. Per the leak, Star Wars Zero Company has an August 27, 2026, release date attached to it. The title is slated to release on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 with a $49.99 standard and $59.99 Deluxe edition. The leaker also adds that there won't be any early access perk attached to this special edition. Pre-orders could kick off alongside the official announcement this Friday, too. For those unfamiliar with the title, Bit Reactor is developing Star Wars Zero Company with help from Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games. The EA-published title is said to be set during the "twilight of the Clone Wars." We will have to wait and see if base building and management mechanics from the XCOM series will be present here, too. "You will step into the shoes of Hawks, a former Republic officer who leads Zero Company — an unconventional outfit of professionals for hire hailing from across the galaxy," reads the game description. "Hawks and Zero Company are recruited for an operation that pits them against an emerging threat that will consume the galaxy if left unchecked. To succeed, Hawks will lead a team of uneasy allies who must set aside their differences to overcome nearly impossible odds." You can catch the Star Wars Zero Company extended gameplay reveal at the Summer Game Fest showcase that's kicking off on Friday at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.
    • All their other games always had a new cast and new story, so that's not very surprising. The new dev is worrisome though.
