Mac OS X Lion Discussion

After using it for a little while, I can say the lack of open indicators in the dock is definitely not a good change. I understand why... but I miss my little blue glow :(

same here... D;

anyone have a clue to to change the scroll direction, 2 fingers down scrolls up and vice-versa?

Hint: Check in the Dock preferences in System Preferences. ;)

It's pretty hidden. You have to go to the Properties panel of the document (from Explorer) and go to the Previous Versions tab in that panel. There's no indication in the app window that Shadow Copy exists.

You right click on a file and select, "Restore Previous Version." A little window appears with a list of all the versions, their dates, and you're given the option of opening them up, copying them, or restoring. That's it really. It doesn't do a nice swoopy timeline effect or anything so I guess it's not "intuitive", but it's no less straight forward. I think the reason why it isn't well known and used is because it's not given a nice big icon on the taskbar and advertised anywhere. But straight forward as it is, I think restricting it to a tiny little properties panel is a horrible mistake.

Thanks, I will probably impress a few people next time around when I work with Windows (probably this summer).

I’m really glad that they are focusing on business areas, now we have a near-perfect model :

- Mission Control -> To manage a universe filled with opened applications and widgets and stuff.

- Time Machine -> So that backups aren’t a concern anymore

- Versions -> Same.

- AutoSave -> Same.

- Mac App Store -> Digital downloads that install right away

- Server -> For Website developers, what else can you ask, really?

Now, I feel like they need to universalize the updates. Mac App Store or Apple’s Software Update or Downloads or the system used by Transmission (I forget the name), etc. The Mac App Store for all updates would be awesome (including OS X, widgets, ...). And it needs automatic updates, more automatic than the iPhone’s App Store.

Now, is it possible to install Mac OS X on a computer and fully configure it, install everything, etc. and copy this installation on other Macs? If not, we need this too.

Is it possible to deploy a network update? If not, either we need this, or the Mac App Store’s automatic updates will actually fix the thing.

Also, they should create partnerships between themselves and Dassault who develops CATIA, and they need SolidWorks and something like SAP, but actually user-friendly. Oh and they need to give more resources to FileMaker, this is also a game changer. AutoCAD is also a game changer, but they actually did make a Mac version :D Then the biggest engineering companies in the world will actually be able to use Macs.

Wow, the System Profiler looks awesome!

Also, if you're a fan of 3-finger swiping to go back/forward in Safari, you're out of luck here.

EDIT: Just realized that 3 finger swiping has changed to 2 finger swiping. It's actually kinda slick - I might do a video later.

So how does it handle two finger horizontal scrolling? Does it just assume you want to go back/forward? Or is it context aware?

That system profile has a hint of Windows 7, especially the battery icon.

I don't get it, the limitation of mobile device is its size, being compact means you can't operate as easy as a normal computer, and what Apple doing here with Lion is limiting itself/user to have a desktop/laptop device but limiting its UX to a mobile device... Mmmm not really impress...

If horizontal scrolling is an option, it will scroll. If you've scrolled to the very left of a page, and then try to scroll further, it will go back.

Can you rephrase that clearly for me?

Okay, I got my account verified and I'm able to get Lion through the Mac App Store. Am I able to add some e-mail addresses to my account and let the people with those addresses also get redemption codes for Lion? I think with iOS builds, you were allowed up to five e-mail addresses or something.

Nope. Anybody that wanted the beta would need to have your developer credentials. If you had a business Mac dev account, you could do that.

Okay, thank you for the info. I had a couple of buddies that wanted to preview Lion as well and I thought they could because I know you can do something like that with iOS, but I see it's been changed. (Is this the first time they've pushed an OS build through the App Store?) So thanks for the info.

Quick question... I'm downloading Lion right now, there is an icon on my Dock. When it's done, will it just be an ISO that I can install on an external hard drive? Because it seems like it's just going to launch the installation and then it's all or nothing.

i am surprised that apple has already released a developer preview of xcode 4.1 :blink:

no just open it once its finished and let it run, it will reboot and you will install lion as you would normally do with mac os x

    • We do it all the time on our IT Service desk mailbox to add a reference, in the subject line, once it's been logged and then it's filed into the appropriate sub-folder. Other companies probably do the same thing.
    • "No. The "New Outlook for Windows" does not support non-cloud mailboxes (such as on-premises Exchange servers). Furthermore, because the New Outlook effectively functions as a web-based client, it requires all connected accounts—even standard IMAP or POP accounts—to route and cache data through Microsoft's cloud servers. You can verify the accepted account setups using the Microsoft Supported Account Types Guide." Built to fail "New" Outlook is basically just webmail in a window wrapper and it's usefulness reflects that.
