A closer look at Windows 10's new text input canvas

Earlier this week, Microsoft released a build of Windows 10 to Insiders, and it brought with it many new features. One new addition in this build is a new text input canvas.

This canvas brings with itself an updated experience for handwriting recognition in Windows 10. This feature is optimized for short text entry and features suggested words at the top of the panel, like the other Windows 10 virtual keyboards.

On the right side, you have the option to close the window, select a different keyboard, delete, return, and compact the view of the writing area. Finally, if you want the old version of the input canvas, there is a button to open up the Windows 8 version of this feature as well.

Handwriting recognition worked well in Windows 8, and as you would expect, the input methods work well here too. The word suggestions at the top of canvas quickly appear after you write each letter, and can help you complete your words faster, as they use a predictive algorithm to guess the word you are trying to write.

This feature is a small update from that of Windows 8 but aligns with what seems to be the overall goal of changing the UI components from the last release of Windows. If you happen to find any other new features in Windows 10 build 10041, make sure to send us a tip.
