Apple's free video recording app, Final Cut Camera, is getting a major update coinciding with the launch of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Final Cut Camera 2.0 profits from the new camera features Apple has added to its flagship iPhone models this year.

Unveiled last year, Final Cut Camera lets users record simultaneous video streams from different angles during a shoot and wirelessly control camera settings for each feed.

Its new update brings support for Apple's ProRes RAW, which debuted on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. The codec brings more creative freedom for users as they can record RAW data directly from the camera. Apple claims that ProRes RAW can export smaller and more flexible files compared to other RAW formats.

Future releases of Final Cut Pro 11.2 and Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.3 will include precise control over iPhone ProRes RAW, allowing editors to make direct adjustments for exposure, colors, temperature, tint, and demosaicing, Apple said.

Final Cut Camera 2.0 also supports the new genlock feature on the Pro models. It allows creators to precisely synchronize video across multiple cameras and inputs, saving time on frame-by-frame alignment. Apple has released the Genlock API for third parties, and it's being used in the Blackmagic Design Camera ProDock.

"The update also introduces open gate recording, which uses the full camera sensor to capture a wider field of view at resolutions greater than DCI 4K," Apple explained. "This gives editors ultimate flexibility to reframe shots, stabilize footage, and set final aspect ratios, all without compromising image quality or performance."

Another camera feature that arrived on all iPhone 17 models is the Center Stage front camera. It is powered by the new square camera sensor that enables a wide field of view and higher resolution. Users can capture footage in horizontal or vertical orientation without rotating their iPhone, and this feature is supported by Final Cut Camera 2.0.

Apart from that, the video capture app now works with the iPhone 17 Pro's new 200mm Telephoto camera using ProRes up to 4K60 quality and supports Apple Log 2. It's also gaining the ability to enable Timecode with options like time of day, record run, or external timecode, allowing users to identify footage precisely during post-production.

Apple said that Final Cut Pro 2.0 will be available on the App Store later this month. The update will require an iPhone XS or later smartphone running iOS 18.6 (or later). Some of its features will require iOS 26 or iPhone 17 Pro models.
