Logitech's new Solar+ K980 keyboard charges with "any light", ditches USB port

Logitech has just announced its new Signature Slim Solar+ K980 keyboard, and it's even ditching the USB port to simply charge via light.

The wireless keyboard space is being expanded by Logitech again, and its newest addition is relying so much on solar power that it doesn't even have a USB port for manual charging. The new Signature Slim Solar+ K980 keyboard is touting the company's Logi LightCharge system that can top up the device with "sunlight or artificial light" with at least 200 lux illuminance.

The full-size keyboard doesn’t have any flashy aspects like RGB backlights, knobs, or mechanical switches, but leans heavily on the "no charging interruptions and no setup stress" elements.

"Even the need to think about charging can be a distraction, so we designed Signature Slim Solar+ to take that off your plate completely," said Art O'Gnimh, General Manager of Core Products Group at Logitech. "It stays powered by light - any light - clearing your desk of cables and eliminating the need to ever physically charge it, while bringing elegance and comfort to your workspace. That's one less thing to worry about on a busy working day."

Logitech says that the battery inside the K980 will last up to four months "in complete darkness." The company also gave the internal battery a 10-year lifespan, and it's said to be easily replaceable by users by simply unscrewing the back case. Meanwhile, the body is made with 70% certified post-consumer recycled plastic.

Like with other Logitech peripherals, the Logi Options+ App can be used with the keyboard to customize its F-keys as well as the Action and the AI Launch keys.

The keyboard connects to devices via Bluetooth or Logitech's Bolt USB receiver, though that is a separate purchase.

The Signature Slim Solar+ K980 comes in at $99.99 for the multi-OS and macOS (only in North America) versions, while the Business edition costs $109.99.
