Samsung will release the Galaxy XCover Pro in the U.S. for $499

Samsung unveiled its latest rugged smartphone, the Galaxy XCover Pro, in Finland last week. Today, the company announced that it is launching the device in the U.S. in the first half of 2020 (via Engadget).

The XCover Pro will be available via Verizon and it will be priced at $499. Samsung says the phone is designed for frontline workers across various industries with its rugged, yet stylish design. Additionally, the handset features third-party capabilities such as the integration of Microsoft Teams' walkie talkie function.

Regarding the phone's official unveiling, DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics, said:

“The Galaxy XCover Pro is a reflection of Samsung’s increased investment and commitment to B2B market. We believe the business mobility market is ripe for transformation in 2020 and we intend to be the leader in pioneering an open and collaborative mobile platform for the next generation of digitally-enabled workforce.”

Commenting on the Microsoft Teams' walkie talkie integration with the device, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, said:

"Microsoft and Samsung have a deep history of bringing together the best hardware and software to help solve our customers' challenges. The powerful combination of Microsoft Teams and the new Galaxy XCover Pro builds on this partnership and will provide firstline workers everywhere with the technology they need to be more collaborative, productive and secure."

Of course, the XCover Pro features IP68 certification for dust and water resistance as well as an MIL-STD 810G certification for protection from environmental conditions like extreme altitude and humidity. Samsung also claims the phone can stay up even after a day with its 4,050mAh removable battery. It also has a glove mode for use with gloves on your hands and a new voice to text message feature.

Samsung also partnered with Visa to incorporate a mobile-based point of sale feature into the phone with approval from Visa's Tap to Phone pilot program. This will let users pay for items they purchase by tapping their contactless card, phone or watch to the XCover Pro.

The XCover Pro sports an edge-to-edge 6.3-inch FullHD+ Infinity Display and it is powered by an Exynos 9611 SoC. It includes a dual rear camera with a 25MP main sensor and an 8MP auxilliary shooter. Inside, it has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, expandable up to 512GB with a microSD slot. The phone runs Android 10.0.
