Steam goes down as outage hits the platform amid its big annual sale

An unlucky Steam outage has hit, preventing users from logging in, browsing the store, and more, right in the midst of the big annual sale.

Valve is currently running its big annual Winter Sale, but you may not be very lucky right now trying to get those sweet deals. While it is a common thing for the store to crumble under a tsunami of gamers at the beginning of each big sale (like those games will run out of stock or something), things usually go back to normal within hours. Now, however, a couple of days into the sale, Steam went down as an outage hit the platform.

Downdetector is clocking a big spike of reports from PC gamers trying to connect to Steam on Christmas Eve. The website and store are not loading, and people have to wait for a prolonged period for Steam to even launch on their PCs. SteamDB also reports websockets errors and offline status for the store, community, and API.

So far, there are no official statements from Steam about the issue, so you may want to play games elsewhere while Gabe and his team are sorting things out. Perhaps grab the latest Epic Games freebie or something?
