Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Ghost Recon franchise, Ubisoft unveiled the next major entry today, which will be a fully free-to-play PvP battle royale experience. Coming with the name Ghost Recon: Frontline, the entry will split 100 players into three member squads and drop them into the island of Drakemoor. Check out the reveal trailer above, though it seems the fan base is not very happy with the direction.
The company detailed the title's main game mode Expedition today, which introduces an intel gathering and extraction mechanic on top of the usual last team standing battle royale rules. This has players completing objectives around the shrinking map and calling in a helicopter for extraction, alerting all other players. Successful extraction means victory.
There are multiple classes for different playstyles that can be swapped mid-round, as well as customizable player characters. The massive map will feature various biomes with mountains and drylands, landmarks, alongside dynamic weather and time of day changes. Vehicles are also in. Other modes aside from Expedition can have lowered player numbers as well, with Control offering a nine versus nine experience for faster matches.
Ubisoft is planning to host a closed test of Frontline on PC via its Connect client from October 14 through 21. Head here to sign up, though it seems only European players are being admitted, for now at least. The minimum system requirements are an AMD Ryzen 3 1200 or Intel Core I5 4460 CPU, 8 GB of RAM, as well as an AMD Radeon RX 470 (4 GB) or an Nvidia GeForce GTX 670/760/960 (4 GB) GPU, all running on Windows 10.
Ghost Recon Frontline does not have a launch window attached to it yet, but it is coming to PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, and Amazon Luna with full cross-play support across all platforms. This is not the first time Ubisoft has tried its hand with a battle royale, with Hyper Scape coming out last year and The Division spin-off Heartland coming later.
