[Ubuntu] How to use apturl anywhere
by Syanide- 0 replies
Since I had a problem with sharing apturl links with my IM program, I did some googling, and here's a little guide on how to use it anywhere on the web. WHAT IS APTURL? AptUrl is a small software package which turns installing a program as easy as clicking on a link. It comes preinstalled on Ubuntu and works great with Firefox. To make an apt link, all you need is the exact software package name (and it has to be in user's repositories, meaning, if you link to a piece of software in some PPA the user hasn't added, it won't be installable), and follow this scheme, it will open Ubuntu Software Center and offer installation: apt:package So, an apt link for the game …

This app (script) removes a PPA and automatically downgrades the packages to a version from the Ubuntu repository (useful if you've found the official version more stable). Download the .deb file from here, and to use it, type this in console: Replace ppa-name with the ppa from your sources list you want to remove. Works with Karmic and Lucid.

How To: Awesome WM with Debian/Ubuntu
by Behemoth- 10 replies

How to: Awesome WM 2.3.4 with Debian/Ubuntu/*buntu First, install the awesome wm package ? apt-get install awesome (which will be the 2.3.4 version) Once installation is complete, most of the customization will be done in the .awesomerc file. This will be located in your ~/user directory The default setup is simple to read, for the most part, and configuration parameters are plainly laid out. To boot into your Awesome WM session, log out of your current desktop and you should be able to select it from your session menu. In my case, I edited the .Xsession file to include awesome and all relevant programs as my xclient session. Here is my ~/.Xsession file: gno…

There are quite a number of free applications such as UNetbootin that allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for many Linux distributions without burning a CD. After installing the linux distro into the USB flash drive, to test it you will have to boot up the computer using the USB flash drive and you won?t access to Windows environment. The only way to test a linux distro or rescue system disc is by using virtualization software such as VirtualBox. For computer users that are not so familiar on how to configure VirtualBox, LiLi has gone one step ahead by allowing you to launch a Linux Live directly in any windows without any configuration nor software installatio…

If for some reason you find the need to get back to your Windows XP bootloader instead of the one installed by your Linux distro, simply follow these instructions: 1. Boot up with your Windows XP disc. 2. Select the option Recovery Console. 3. At the prompt, type "fdisk /mbr" (without the quotes of course) 4. Restart your computer. Edited with correct info from the following posts...

Disable Nautilus desktop handling
by kemical- 1 reply

A quite essential hack as this seems to be a frequently asked question. By default, Nautilus takes control over the desktop with icons and right-click-menus. Quite a lot of users don't like this, and used to disable this setting in the preferences with earlier versions of N. With Nautilus 2.2 this preference was removed from the gui. To disable this now, use gconftool and set a certain option to false (or find, create and disable the relevant option in gconf-editor) gconftool -t bool /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop -s false source : http://jodrell.net/gnome-hacks/hacks.html?id=8

Gmount-iso, AcetoneIso ,Furius ISO Mount and Archive mounter are tools to mount ISO images in Ubuntu. However none of them can mount a UDF ISO image it correctly. When an UDF ISO image is mounted using the above tools ,the mount folder contained a single file called readme.txt So I have made 2 shell scripts to mount and unmount both UDF and normal Joilet ISO images in Ubuntu You can read the full tutorial and the mount.sh and unmount.sh code here http://agnipulse.com/2008/08/easily-mount-...ives-in-ubuntu/

Small Gnome Menu Icons
by Behemoth- 19 replies

I found a trick that will work for all themes, instead of editing each individual theme's file. Create a file called .gtkrc-2.0 in your home folder, and add the line: gtk-icon-sizes = "panel-menu=16,16" where 16,16 can be changed to whatever size you want your icons. You have to be using a GTK2.0 theme. Thanks to megamanXplosion for posting the original trick. Here is a screenshot of my menu after the file has been created.

Alrighty then, Like with all new things, some things don't work. In Ubuntu 9.04, UT2004 worked just fine. However, the library libstdc++5 was removed from Ubuntu 9.10's software channel and was replaced with version 6 of the C++ Library. That's a good thing right, having the latest - well, UT2004 requires the older library. Never fear, after searching all over the globe for the solution, I came across the answer WITHOUT command lines. Error Message When Loading UT2004 Ubuntu 9.04 sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade sudo aptitude install libstdc++5 Ubuntu 9.10 Download: libstdc++5_3.3.6-17ubuntu1_i386.deb (32-bit installer) Download: …

Help Installing Driver
by Billus- 0 replies

Hey everyone. I've never had to install a driver apart from the standard graphics card. I want to use my USB TV Tuner with Ubuntu rather than having to boot into Windows to watch. I got the driver from MSI's website. It comes in a .zip file and I'm unsure on how to install it. I've searched the internet but I couldn't find anything. I've attached the driver to this post. Thanks to anyone who can help. DIGIVox_miniIII_Linux.zip

okay after alot of trial and error i finally figured a way to fully sync up my htc touch with ubuntu. we all know ubuntu does not have much if any syncing support right now, you would have to install mandriva 2009 for that. in the mean time the way i will explain will allow you "fully" sync your pda's & phones that run windows mobile 5 & 6. 1.) install ubuntu 2.) do all of your updates and such. 3.) install vmware workstation for linux "not freeware".... but it does give you a 30 day trial when you sign up. 4.) install either xp or vista on vmware, configure how much ram and hdd space to use. 5.) after xp or vista install, install vmware tools from within …

Remember to get the following program before doing any of these steps: Super Grub Installing Windows 1. Make sure you've backed up all your data, as I can't guarantee this to work. 2. Install Ubuntu first just to cause trouble . 3. Make sure you have a blank NTFS (or fat32*) partition on your harddrive. 4. Optional: Use the super grub disc or free dos fdisk (couldn't find page) to hide your ubuntu partition. Follow D in the next set of directions 5. Insert your Windows XP install/recovery disk into your computer, boot into it, and wait for it to load it's drivers and everything. 6. A menu will come up with three options. Today I came across the website XercesTech, I assume it is new as all content is dated March 2009 and beyond. Two good articles that caught my attention present a guide to configuring and installing a fully encrypted Ubuntu system from scratch while the second article expands upon the concept to include a fully encrypted Windows system partition managed by TrueCrypt's bootloader. http://tech.xerces.com/full-system-encryption-for-linux.geek http://tech.xerces.com/dual-boot-encryption.geek

[howto] Simple Avatar maker (from screenshot)

Hey there, just playing a bit more with learning to script, and I have combined a few things to make a simple Linux bash script that will allow you to take a screenshot, superimpose your preferred "main" image on top of it (in my case, it is Opus the penguin), then upload it to an FTP site of your choice. It is a bit ugly (and I keep it in my home directory, inside a directory non-descriptively titled "temp". :ermm: I have it commented a bit, and would appreciate expert assistance to improve it (because I just know it is taking up extra intermediate steps that are not necessary and inefficient) :p Here it is: #!/bin/bash # ensure I am in the temp directory where I am…

Some Simple Gnome Customizations
by megamanXplosion- 2 replies
- 5.2k views
Prerequisites To perform the customizations I mention in this thread, you need a certain package. In the main menu, go to System > Administration > Add/Remove Software. In the newly opened window, type gconf-editor into the search box. When it's done searching, tick the checkbox for the package it found, then click Apply at the bottom right of the window. Once the package is installed, close the Add/Remove Software window. In the main menu, go to System Tools > Configuration Editor. This is where you will make most of the following customizations. Nautilus Browser Mode The Fedora team has Nautilus open a new window when you open a folder. I found this behavio…

[HOWTO] Program using Python
by Lechio- 5 replies
- 11.2k views
Lesson #2 In Lesson #1 we've already seen how easy it is to make simple CLI programs that would print messages on the console, and a simple example of a way to display a message on screen using a graphical toolkit. This lesson will explore the graphical toolkits available for python, with special approach to one of the most advanced toolkits available, QT. Part 1: Joke reader. In this part we are going to make a simple program that reads a text file and display its contents on screen. We will be making something very (questionably) useful, a joke reader. Download the file attached; Extract it to a directory; Open "joker.py" with your editor. neow…
