Sorry about this, I tend to just put all of my thoughts into a post without making myself very clear This post provides information on how to get an Atheros PC Card (the D-Link DWL-G630) to work under Ubuntu Dapper flight 6 without installing any additional software The initial diagnosis of the problem is that the PC Card does not light up and ubuntu is not showing the device under the GUI From the command line I issued the dmesg | less command which shows all the activities of the linux devices being loaded/unloaded and noticed that there was no ath_pci driver After reading this troubleshooting document https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WirelessTroubleshootingGuide I was …

[how to] Ubuntulooks on other distros or Breezy
by ViperSnake- 6 replies
- 7.5k views
You've already seen the new Ubuntu theme right? Well, the only distro that will have it default is the Ubuntu 6.04 version...but why leave Breezy or other Gnome distros out? It's actually very easy to install the new theme...which is actually powered by a new GTK engine based off ClearLooks Cairo. You will need a GTK version with Cairo support (heck, if you can run ClearLooks Cairo, you can run this!) and your prefered way of theme selection. 1. Go here ( http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/gnome/gt...es-ubuntulooks) and click on your Architecture to download the .deb file. But wait! Only Debian Distros can use Debs! But, hold it right there, you are allowed to extract the…

Hey everyone, Ubuntu currrently runs with Mozilla Firefox 1.07. The latest version of the browser is 1.5RC3, and in this guide I will show you how to upgrade to it. Why upgrade? Why upgrade to version 1.5? Well, it has quite a few bugfixes, and is MUCH, much faster than Firefox 1.07. When I installed it, it was running about 2-3 times faster than 1.07. Steps Step 1: Use synaptic package manager and get libstdc++5. If you already have it, go to step 2. Step 2: Download and save the latest version of Firefox to the desktop. It can be found Here. it is Firefox 1.5 RC3. Step 3: Type the following into a Terminal window: This will extract firefox, to /opt/ and delete…

Share your email between XP&Nix with Thunderbird,
by betamaxman- 0 replies
- 2.7k views
This is realy a very easy thing to do even for the nix newbee. First part is the most overlooked part of dual booting, but IMO the most important, and that is to have a vfat partition of 32 gigs so that you can share files between the two OSs, the best time to do this is when installing nix. the next part if you are using Fedora or Ubuntu is to edit the /etc/fstab file to auto mount your fat partition at boot, this can be difficult to explain here but suffice it to say you need to add a line to the file similar to this "/dev/hd?? /mnt/hd?? auto 00012" , or something lke this depending on your distro and hardware. You need to as root enter the /etc directory and open the …

X.org CVS HOWTO Here's a quick guide for people who fancy trying out the new X.org with true transparency and drop shadows etc. It can also be used to give you a very basic idea of how to use CVS in general. DISCLAIMER Using unstable software, especially for something as important as your X server, can screw things up. A lot. If you can't afford the possibility that your computer may get completely hosed, this is not for you. If you can't afford the possibility that you might need to reinstall your old X server from a text console, this is not for you. If you are faint of heart or have a weak constitution, this is not for you. Having said that, if you enjoy trying out …

Recently I redid my server and I did it so incredibly easy and fast, so I decided to share what I did. I'm assuming you have a computer you want to dedicate as a server, which has a hard disk and a cdrom drive that is able to boot cds. I am also assuming that you know how to burn ISO's. This guide is for running an httpd with PHP and MySQL, an ftpd, and sshd Step 1) Go here and choose a mirror download the latest ISO. Step 2) Use nero or a similar program to burn the ISO to a cd. Step 3) Boot the DSL cd and when everything is loaded either press ctrl+alt+backspace to close X and go to the command prompt, or open a terminal inside fluxbox and type sudo -u root fdis…

Rip DVD's to your iPod on Linux
by Smitjel- 0 replies

Rip DVD's to your video iPod on Linux using Handbrake. The Apple website has these specs for the iPod Video: I've ripped a couple of episodes of Beavis and Butthead to .mp4 on a Fedora Core 3, Handbrake 0.7.0 setup. To get Handbrake to build, all I had to install was jam and nasm: yum install jam yum install nasm For you Ubuntu guys, just make sure you have make, jam, gcc, dpkg-dev, and g++ installed. Once you get Handbrake built, check out this guide on different encoding options you can use. This is what I ran to rip an episode of Beavis and Butthead to mp4 (that hopefully plays on the iPod). If somebody wants to test it on their iPod, shoot me a PM and I'll…

Everything in this guide is all in my own personal opinion/limited linux experience This article is only concerned about 'Which Distro' and the semi-noob in Operating Systems Introduction * Installation of Linux: There are tutorials out there for specific Linux installations which is beyond the scope of this guide. We've all seen the threads that always get asked on a weekly basis and sometimes you'll notice similar replies: - Good Place To Get Distros - Help Me Choose A Distro - Which Distro Should I Use? So it's time a page was written to deal with most of them, and hopefully if we see a new thread that isn't a specific problem, then people could di…

Okay so this is the first guide I've ever attempted so go easy on me. I've broke and had to reinstall ubuntu so many times now that I figured I'll just write this up here. This guide is aimed helping you through setting up wpa_supplicant for any of the drivers that it supports, which will allow you to access wpa encrypted wireless networks. This is based on the many threads at ubuntuforums.org so thanks to the good people of the Ubuntu world. Note: (1) It will not guide you through installing the drivers for your wireless card so I assumed that you already have it installed and working on non encrypted networks (2) I use Ubuntu (Debian) so some parts of the install …

[HOWTO] Create packages
by ujjwal- 4 replies
- 3.4k views
How to create packages from source compiled software in Linux/Unix Most users of linux systems will have encountered software that are provided as their source code, and which use a Makefile to automate their build and install process. Now, the problem with this is that uninstalling the software is not so easy, especially if you have deleted the source code directory. It would require hunting and deleting each file manually. Easy enough when the whole software is a single binary, not so trivial if it contains several libraries, shared files, man pages and binaries. So here are three methods which will create a package out of the compiled binaries, which can be installed…

[HOWTO] Add NTFS support
by markwolfe- 5 replies
- 9.7k views
RedHat and Fedora don't include NTFS support by default, due to patent issues. An excellent resource to run an RPM to add this support to the kernel is here: http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net You will have to pick the proper RPM, and it will depend on which distro version, and exact kernel you are running. Click on the "NTFS RPMs" link on the left-hand side of the page, and you will be allowed to select from downloads that now appear on the left-hand side again for various distros. Click on the distro version you are using (i.e. RedHat 9 or Fedora 2 for example). Next two tables will appear. The top one is the one of interest, as this is all of the pre-prepared RP…

[HOW TO] Install ATI Drivers
by shrike- 8 replies
- 7.5k views
This how-to is dedicated to the installation and configuration of the ATI driver using Livna RPM packages. Before installing the Livna RPMs, you need to remove any previous ATI driver. Something like: yum remove ati-fglrx* kernel-module-fglrx* rpm -e fglrx rm -rf /lib/modules/fglrx First, you have to setup yum for Livna.org unstable repository. So modify your /etc/yum.conf file. * Fedora Core 2 [livna-unstable] name=Livna Unstable baseurl=http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/yum/unstable gpgcheck=1 * Fedora Core 3 [livna-unstable] name=Livna Unstable baseurl=http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/RPMS.unstable g…
