PC Settings app? You mean the one INSIDE OF WINDOWS WHEN WINDOWS WON'T BOOT? For the love god, can people stop telling people We don't need no stinking hot key because you can tell windows to boot into safe mode from PC Settings. While this is true, the entire point of Safe mode is a mode to be used when you can't boot into regular mode.

 

Yes you can create a recovery USB key, yes you can maybe get it to work from inside recovery. I'm just talking about walking the average user through it over the phone so I can establish a remote assistance connection, which is almost impossible to get the average user into safe mode with Windows 8 if the PC wont' boot.

 

Nope F8 still works just fine in Windows 7 (Believe it or not)

If you really needed to get that options you would know that Windows 8.x automatically offer that options if the boot fails.

I got file system error in my pc and after one BSOD the advanced startup screen showed up.

Old build is old, aren't they into the 984x builds now?   I hope they surprise us and we see/hear about something new we haven't seen/heard about yet.

Not to hate on Australians, but you people really argue anything anyone does with design. First on Windows 8, then on  Neowin's redesign and now on Windows 9! I'm serious look at the location of prominent members of Neowin that completely hate on the new "flatter" designs.

 

Windows 8's development cycle was a lot longer than Threshold's, and the DP was WAAYYY different from the RP of Windows 8 in terms of design, functionality, features, and User Experienc

The two DP leaks (7950 and 7989) had the Start menu, but no StartScreen - and were roundly dismissed (here on Neowin) as Windows 7 Service Pack 2.  In other words, not different ENOUGH from Windows 7.

I'm on your side with this one, had a computer last week that wouldn't boot, couldn't get the safe mode menu no matter what I did so had to give up and reinstall windows.  Problem then which version as it's sometimes impossible to know if it's 8 or 8.1.  very few oem bios's tell you so its just a lot of unnecessary time wasting, also sometimes you need a boot disk that is UEFI compatible depending on laptop manufacturer which can also be annoying
