[Official] Star Trek: Discovery Thread

Having been formed a century before does in no way negate the point that this IS S31... at this point your cherry picking part of sentences and arguments to prove a point that doesn't exist for why you don't like the show. just accept it's Trek but you don't like it. it's not that hard.

It's changing goal posts because the argument was never about the main characters, but about Trek and about what was done in previous trek and by the federation. if they're going to do the exact same thing they did in the previous trek shows... ummm why make a new show... new stories and new characters and new challenges.

Did you even read my posts or where you to busy to find points you could cherry pick and argue to death that you didn't notice that "" around win ?  At this point you're not even arguing you're just ranting and not even reading what others write.

Per my previous post Section 31 having been formed over a century before. Anyone actually watched Star Trek before? Nothing better for a clandestine organisation to be flying around on a starship letting everyone find out about them. How is this "cherry picking your statement of  "this series is either S31 or the founding of S31." ? given given I picked apart both points. Since you've given an absolute that it *IS S31* could you elaborate on your role within the production?

The argument before you jumped in was over the crew being at war and that it changes their morals, I used the DS9 crew as an example of what was shown to be a much more costly war and morals not sliding to the point of near non existence. Given each Star Trek show has revolved around a crew and not the entire fleet of potentially hundreds of thousands of people it's pure speculation on what they were doing, did you understand the posts before you jumped in because it doesn't seem like you understand what you decided to dive into. You then accuse me again of cherry picking, per above I picked your complete statement apart, but please set the record what does quotes around WIN mean in HawkMan land? You then state I "argue to death" and proceed to state "not even arguing you're just ranting". Which is it?

You'll also note that you're the only one who's arguing by posting childish meme pictures instead of actually articulating your arguments.

When the counter argument boils down to statements such as "I didn't really ask for or care for your opinion", given on a public forum..... and  "this isn't "Your Trek"" I just go for an easy kick because clearly it's not worth the effort!

Looking at the quotes here - I'm guessing he's still trying to pick fault with a new show because it's not "his trek" and only he can say what a "true fan" should interpret?

Well, here's another thread gone to ###### thanks to a blow hard.  Well done...

It doesn't have to, if people stop responding to him and get on with discussing Discovery...

For me, with the latest ep, I'm not sure I liked hearing the F word in Trek.  It's not the swearing itself, I couldn't really care about that, it's just that we've not seen it in Trek before and I'm not sure it really fits...  I'm not going to cry over it though.

Harry Mudd.  Not sure I like the re-envisioning of him either.  He's gone from a semi-lovable rogue, to a complete and utter scumbag who deserves a phaser to the nuts...

Klingons as Space Orcs.  So what? They always were, you know... Make up technologies change, and behaviourally, these Klingons are much much earlier than the ones we're used to seeing... Several generations earlier.  I do, however, wish they'd drop the constant Klingon speech & subtitles now. We get it, they're not speaking English. Can we now focus on the acting and scene instead of reading subtitles?

No need for swearing IMO.  People think these days swearing makes a show good, it does not.  Data says ###### in ST Generations and Riker said bastard in Insurrection and that was ok I guess but just didnt seem to fit with Discovery.

Yeah, the swearing was just... well it came across forced, a little jarring and pulled me out of the show for a second.  I'm not anti-swearing by any means, but it just didn't fit.

I actually liked the change for Mudd.  A scumbag who feels justified.  It felt a little more realistic.

I saw people saying the F word was used in a great capacity because she said it while they were discussing hard science stuff (even though its fake hard science stuff lol) so they justify it that way - which is fine. As an old fart, I don't really care that they used the F word in Trek, I mean they've said the S word a few times now so the next logical step I suppose was the F word.

Also, the producer of the show basically said this show while in the prime universe, is in its own timeline (explain that one away to me though, huh???) and they are going to do their own thing more or less, and only acknowledge TOS stuff when they approach specific timeline events or the 10 years is up (if they do any time jumps, which he implied they might do). So,I think in the end, everything in this show is either going to be erased with a time reset, or the ship (or at least Michael and maybe Saru etc) will wind up in another timeline or dimension etc. And all their stuff will be erased.

How are they letting everyone find out about them ? did you even watch the show ? it's not marked as a S31 ship. at most people know is the few that have seen it before going to a lifetime in jail is black badges... which means nothing. As for the ridicvulous argument from earlier in the thread that S31 would only operate form some magical hidden base... No, theyve used ships before, and some technologies needs to be tested on ships. like oh I don't know, experimental space jump technology.

And yes I understand the posts before I posted. I'm not sure you did though. as you've provenly been arguing a different argument than what you suddenly changed to.

Except those are "your" arguments after others don't agree with your view and/or interpretation of what happened in previous shows.

I dunno I didn't even notice it. but I'd say hearign the f word mostly makes it more human and relatable.  people swear. people on ships swear more. soldiers even with ranks swear even more, especially on a ship.

Does it make the show worse? nah, does it make it better... maybe not directly but it makes it less absurdly perfect, which makes it better in a way, as more relatable and "real".

I really hope they don't pull a deus ex at the end. however, it would put any discussion about it being trek to bed. deus ex is trek 101.

If the words are used in a more real way and not so forced it's fine, I think the writers just dropped them in the episode to hammer home the idea that this isn't regular TV like before.  Which opens the show up to other things you just don't see on prime time channels.   I think we're in for a more "bloody" version of trek then before, once we get a bit deeper into the war, wouldn't surprise me one bit if down the line we see people losing an arm or leg after some explosion on the ship.

I actually didn't appreciate the goryness during the Klingon chose your pain scene, and the shuttle craft boarding where they stabbed the guy to death was bad taste imo as well. I get it's now TV-MA trek and you'll have these things, but I'm here to watch Trek, not watch blood spurt on to the camera and hear guts and bone crunching. The Klingons have already lived up to the reputation of a warlike race, and we didn't need to actually get that gritty with it. The phaser burn thing with the Klingon captain was interesting though.

If I wanted to watch someone get impaled by a weapon, I'll go back to my DVR and watch Glenn get the bat.

Given the admiral stated to Lorca his conscripting Burnham to the crew is having a negative impact on general moral clearly many more people know about the existence of the ship and who is on it. Again you don't operate a clandestine operation by allowing everyone to know what you're doing and who your operative are. Now it's pretty clear you either won't understand this or can't bring yourself admit to it and I am well passed the point of caring about it please feel free to respond by emptying another bucket of nonsensical ideas however I'm couldn't give a toss about reading them.

Her impact on morale could be any number of things, general aboard the ship. but also because they know she's not in jail. because official records will also show that she's now conscripted if not what or where. and they may know about the ship. I mean the ship assists places in need. that doesn't mean they know what ship it is or who actually operates it. just that it's an experimental ship performing science tests. The ship doesn't come with a big glaring S31 logo while the ship is painted all black.

Others know the ship exists. they don't know whos operating it, just that it's a starfleet ship.

I honestly don't know where they are going with this show now. There are so many plot lines running, I can hardly keep up at this point lol

Also, I won't discuss the episode in detail since people probably haven't seen it yet etc, but the preview for next week looks like a tried and true Trek trope show. But again I'll say this - the mirror universe ###### is SO ON THE NOSE. We get it, we got it weeks ago thanks to Frakes, but we get it already! Question is, which universe are we actually in now though.... tee hee.

Just in case you guys didn't hear, Discovery got renewed for a Season 2 pick up by CBS All Access. It won't be until early 2019 though according to the statements so far because of how long it takes to film each episode (something like 3 months each!!!! ?) and taking into account the problems season 1 had coming to air. The head producer also said that near the tail end of season 1 they came up with a terrific idea for a arc in season 2, which is now going to be the main plot going forward for the show in season 2. So there's that. :D

YAY Season 2!

Shooting just one episode takes 3 months? That can't be true.

I read the article on my tablet that said that (it was something like 2-3 months per episode) and I've been trying to find where I read it using Google, so far I can't find anything. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I saw it said that. Either way, the show won't be back until early 2019 at the earliest at this point.

It's almost certainly the post-production that makes it take that long. I doubt the actual acting takes anywhere near that long.

So yeah, that was a pretty good ship in a bottle/time loop Star Trek episode eh? I really liked it, and I'd gladly say its up there with Cause and Effect (and the DS9 and Voy versions also) actually. I've come to the conclusion that Stamets is just being changed by the alien DNA stuff and not a mirror universe thingy - though who knows at this point. Also, next week is the "mid season finale" I guess, looks suitably epic etc.

I'd rather they have stayed away from time travel stories, especially the Groundhog day episodes.  Still, it was a reasonable take on it at least!

Really not liking what they've done to Harry Mudd though...

See, I tend to absolutely hate Groundhog episodes in any series (that new Happy Deathday looks like it would send me insane) and yet somehow liked this one.

And love how they've twisted Mudd.

21 minutes ago, FloatingFatMan said:

The changes to Mudd fit the new show, but they're hugely incongruous when compared to the Mudd from TOS...

One thing I refuse to do with this show is  to compare it to TOS - I just don't think it helps in any way.

    • Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2 to finally get one of the most requested features by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft officially confirmed Windows 11 version 26H2 with the latest build, 26300.8697, for testing in the experimental Insider channel. The company also published more details about it mainly directed towards IT admins and system admins. Essentially version 26H2 will be delivered via an enablement package (eKB) over Windows 11 25H2. If you are wondering about some of the upcoming features in the next Windows version, one of them is certainly very interesting as Microsoft has confirmed it is finally bringing one of the most overwhelmingly requested features ever. March Rogers, the Partner Director of Design at Microsoft, recently highlighted some of the Search improvements that the company is testing, and during the interaction with users on X where he posted it, Rogers also confirmed that the company is working on disabling web search results inside Search. This is something which many users find quite annoying as Windows would often serve them links to Bing which it feels could be more helpful rather than bringing up the actual object or app the user may be searching for on their PC. Finally though the company is prioritizing local file search over the web. However the feature could not be disabled for many users as not all new features are immediately rolled out to everyone. Image via phantomofearth (X) Windows enthusiast phantomofearth who likes to dig deep into new builds uncovered the IDs you will need to enable these features. Using the following feature IDs the new Search-related features landing in Windows 11 26H2 can be used. Follow the steps below to enable the new Search experience on Windows 11 build 26300.8697: Download ViveTool from GitHub and unpack the files in a convenient and easy-to-find folder. Press Win + X and select Terminal (Admin). Switch Windows Terminal to the Command Prompt profile with the Ctrl + Shift + 2 shortcut or by clicking the arrow-down button at the top of the window. Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the CD command. For example, if you have placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive. Type vivetool /enable /id: and press Enter. Restart your computer. If you change your mind and want to restore, repeat the steps above and replace /enable with /disable in the commands on steps 5 and 6. Delightedly and perhaps also expectedly, once you disable web search and other such bloat, the Windows 11 Search is said to get snappier as remarked by another Windows enthusiast Xeno.
