Suse 9.1 etc for FREE

Recommended Posts

I ordered it and got the confirmation email right away.

However, since I have never used a linux anything and am going to install side by side with my winxp, I am/will be a noob at it and am asking for suggestions and helpful tell-alls about linux.

I have always used MS...98,98SE,ME,XP.

Don't know a thing about Linux.

I got my confirmation e-mail on the 28th aswell and it arrived this morning. I don't know what I've been sent as I was at work when it arrived but my other half called me and asked what I'd sent off to America for (I guess she figured it was porn or something) :)

Anyway, I got three discs but as I haven't seen them I'm left wondering what exactly I've recieved. Kinda hoping for Suse Pro 9 so I can have a real play with it. Never done much with Suse but I've heard that its one of the better distros (please don't take this an an open invitation for a flame war on "this distro is better than the other one" etc.........)

Suppose I'll have to wait til I get home so I can have a look - its funny, I was just thinking about downloading Mandrake 10 but now I'm not so sure :)

What does it actually say on the discs - can't quite read them. Oh and what are they BTW???

This is the readme form DVD disc 1.

README - General Notes

for Novell 2004 Linux Resource Kit - DVD 1A, DVD 1B and DVD 1C

DVD 1A

SLES 8 has four CD Images in .ISO format. The first of which is

the SLES 8 Installation CD-ROM. The next three CDs are the United

Linux package and will be refered to as United Linux CD 1 to 3 in

the installation program. Write these CDs to CD-Recordable or

Rewritable media, boot to the SLES 8 Installation CD-ROM and follow

the prompts.

Other Novell software is included, such as Nterprise Linux Services,

GroupWise 6.5.1, RedCarpet Enterprise Server, etc.

Installation requires that these images be either recorded to CD or

mounted with 'mount -t iso9660 -o loop <image.iso> </mountlocation>'.

From there, you can run the install scripts included for each product.

DVD 1B

SuSE Linux Professional 8.2 is included as individual CD Images

in .ISO format. To install that version you will need to write all

images to seperate CDs using most popular CD Recording software

packages. You will then be able to boot using CD 1 of the SuSE

package and installation will continue using the other CDs when

needed.

The Ximian Desktop 2 is also provided on this DVD as a CD ISO image.

XD2 requires a SUSE Linux Professional 8.2 system (not 9.1).

DVD 1C --- **I used this DVD to install SUSE 9.1**

SuSE Linux Professional 9.1 DVD is a bootable disc that requires BIOS

support for bootable CD/DVD media and a DVD-ROM Drive. Booting the

SuSE Linux Professional 9.1 DVD will allow you to choose to

boot to the hard drive, install the product, or perform recovery

functions. Once you've selected an installation option you will be

brought into SuSE's YaST system to configure your installation.

This bootable DVD is not readable in Windows.

As you seem to have installed it, you should be able to tell us what the evaluation means then.

Is there a time-limit or is it just unsupported software?

Its just strange that they said i would get a confirmation email when it is shipped but i didnt. I got the original email stating, thanks for your request blah blah blah, but nothing on the fact it had been shipped.

Still at least i have them now, so i can go home and install it tonight.

i got mine the other day, you're right they are eval, but they also...dont use liscening.

So they are evaluation products but don't have any limitation on usage - is that what you are saying? (No time limit or similiar things)

    • Apart from Early Hiccups on Windows 11 on first install on October 6th 2021 on my old Intel 10700 daily use Desktop PC at the time, used to have issue with Bluetooth suddenly no longer working and only fix back then was always another clean install--then would work for a while. Transition to 2024 when i decided to finally upgrade that system for better support for Battlefield 2042 and Battlefield 6 later on, opted for next daily use Gaming Desktop AMD Ryzen 7 7700X and Radeon 7800XT OC 16GB. No major problems at all with this desktop, OS was clean installed way back on 10/8/2025 not long after 25H2 released. Overall i've been happy with Windows 11 Pro from the start, even minor little quirks didn't sway me. Heck i even use Windows 8 and upgraded immediately upon release back then on my old HP P6-2133W Desktop, and while the specs of that machine didn't give me top notch performance--i still was able to do what i wanted to, without too many slowdowns. Windows ME i didn't use on any of my personal systems back in the day, kept those systems on 98SE til XP released, and grabbed that immediately on release date. Kept XP til Vista Released then upgraded immediately, kept Vista til Windows 7 released, then updated immediately again
    • Broadcom: dreadful company who is destroying VMware by pricing it out of the market.
    • To be fair, it wasn't going anywhere. Even when Windows Phone could run Android APKs, Google didn't want any of it so it'd never work and the same thing happened with Windows. It was never about the store or it's users, it was always the developers and who they aligned to.
    • Wake me up when this comes to PC. Until then... zzzzzzzz....
