Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20" Widescreen LCD

They won't charge you shipping... at least that's what I know so far. But I?ll be able to confirm when I get on the phone with them tonight to exchange my A01 with BAD backlight bleeding for an A02.

I think, according to their "customer satisfaction policy" they'll only charge you shipping if you choose to return the monitor for a full refund (which should not be much... $20 - $30 CND max).

Just ordered in the UK :D - Around ?360 inc VAT and delivery but that's rip off Britain for you!

The process got complicated as I needed this delivered on Thursday or Friday this week (As I wouldn't be in to take the delivery otherwise) and had to place my order over the phone...

...With a indian on the other end :xx

Anyway the ironic thing is I'm actually not going to be using this until I move into my new house (Should start moving the next few weeks but my 'computer' room dosen't even have any surfaces yet!)...Now I don't really want to have to take it out of the box, attach it all up, then try packing it back in because knowing me I will damage it doing all this (Or start using it here in my current house : ). If I get a really bad panel will Dell send me the refurbs after a certain period of time or will they send "new" goods?

Also I know you will laugh but at the moment I have a nVidia TNT2 32mb AGP card in my system (: ), will this power the monitor just for the basic Windows XP/Internet Explorer/Office job until I purchase a new graphics card (ATI 9800 Pro for ?100 or so do the job?)

Can't wait to get this all up and running...Currently got a Samsung 172v which suffered a 'slight' accident and has quite a bit of cosmetic damage...Off to eBay it goes once I move house:rofl:l:

Well, here's a picture of the backlight bleeding that I'm getting. I think it's bad enough to exchange it for a new one... considering I've spend over a $1000 CND on it.

So I get on the phone with customer service... and I tell the lady on the phone that I'd like to exchange it for a different piece as mine suffers from severe backlight issues.

Well she thinks about it for a moment... and then ask if I've spoken to tech support. Now I knew this was going down a wrong path as she probably is not willing to accept that there IS an issue with the Rev. A01 of this series. So I tell her no and she insists that I speak to tech support before she can approve of an exchange... so i say O.K.

Now I call tech support and I when I first explained the issue to him, he had no idea what I was talking about... I was even put on hold right after I said "backlight bleeding" as I think he had to go look it up. When he came back he had me go through pointless monitor trouble shooting... he then had me adjust the OSD settings such as position and transparency in the hopes of fixing my backlight issues... I just played along and at the end of it all... he tells me that he's exhausted all means of trouble shooting and that he'll have to call me back so him and a monitor specialist can do some more research on the issue as this is the first time they've encountered such an issue.

Now all this was through Dell Canada, so maybe they really don't have this issue documented... but I really do doubt that. Anyway... I'll be calling customer service tomorrow and try for a return again... if I'm required to go to tech support again... I'll kindly explain that I've done that already and the issue was not resolved. If they still refuse... I'll ask to speak to a manager and take it from there.

seems so far that the dell 2005FPW 20 inch series is more trouble than its worth

Nah... the backlight thing is overblown. Even with the bleed it's not like it's a big deal. And c'mon the pic somebody just posted above your post has NO BLEED WHATSOEVER! Maybe a tiny bit, but seriously that's as good as it will get... c'mon people!

The backlight issue is definitely not overblown... if fact, your statements lead me to believe that you don't' really know what backlight bleeding actually is.

Also if I remember correctly, you bought a used 2005FPW, so you didn't spend as much as most of here have and so as result you might not find it that big of a deal. But I've spent $1000 on this monitor... so for that price it better be perfect.

Would it be acceptable to Dell if we paid them roughly the amount of the retail price but not the full price? I don't think so.... so we shouldn't be getting a roughly perfect monitor, but not quite perfect.

You also have to take into account what people use this monitor for... if it's just casual usage, then yes chances are you probably won't notice the backlight bleeding and it'll be a non-issue.

But for those of us who play games or watch movies... it can get quite annoying rather quickly.

The thing sells for less than $1000 Canadian at Dell.ca. No matter how much you got it for, the going price now is much less and for that exact price slight backlight leak is definately something that will come with the monitor. If it is extreme, then yes, by all means exchange it, but by looking at the picture you posted, there is nearly no leakage, and the next one you get will be worse, not better, and maybe have a few dead pixels as well.

I am a heavy gamer, and my backlight bleed is worse than yours and even in the dark I notice no problems. I have some stuck pixels and it is not a problem for me. This is definately not an Apple Cinema screen or w/e they call them these days. If you payed for one of those you would pay double, and yes, then you can expect a 20 inch widescreen to be perfect with no leakage or any dead pixels. But these are much cheaper. You can get one new on eBay for $500... revision A02 will full warranty. From Dell it's $750 now, but was much cheaper with the coupon codes etc.

I'm just trying to help you out here, if you exchange that monitor, you'll get a worse one back ... that's a 90% guarantee.

The picture you posted definitly not that bad I have seen alot worse and I personaly wouldnt return it unless it also had stuck pixels if you do you will prolly get one worse anyways

Alot of LCDs have some bleeding to an extent especially on pure black screen I doubt what you posted is anything you would even notice in general use or games

Well mine will be delivered here on Friday between 5pm and 9pm :D

Probably a "UK" model based on how long it took to place and confirm delivery (Ordered Monday, 'processed' yesterday-today.

I have looked at my Samsung in the dark before and there is a huge amount of bleeding at the top of the screen

and how is that not more trouble than its worth

People who get a bad monitor are more likely to post about it then someone who received a perfect working one. I had a perfect one an A01 model too! no back light bleeding no dead pixels and no other problems. I would buy this screen again in a heart beat. Dell have a top product here.

hello i have aquestion for anyone willing to answer. I intend to bye the dell 2005 but i 've been thinking that in this price you can bye 2 of 17 inch dell 1704 monitors.combining those with a graphics card that provides support for two monitors you have alot of working space, probably a lot more than the 20 inch dell 2005 model can provide. So my question is why to prefer the dell 2005 over 2 -17 inch dell 1704 monitors?

It's wide screen, can watch movies / play games wide screen. Plus if you have 2 smaller screens you get the 2 boarders that are on the sides of the monitors next to each other leaving sometimes 1 or 2 inches in the middle of your desktop which is very annoying.

Well said. Two monitors is really annoying. A widescreen is all you need. Really wide and lots of screen real estate and it feels so much more "proper" to look at a widescreen. After a while, it doesn't even look that wide anymore to be honest :p

Do Dell send refurbs after a while or new if something is faulty?

I don't like the idea of setting this up then having to place the screen flat on a cushion to remove the stand. Will get the screen very dusty I would think.

(In my current house, Nice shiny new house in a few weeks once everything is sorted)

Also, what cards are everyone using? I'm not a serious gamer as I like my consoles but would like to be able to play RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, GTA 3/VC/SA etc, The Sims 2. You get the picture :D

AMD 3000+ XP

120gb Hard Drive

512mb DDR Ram (When I have the time to nick 512mb from my redundant server setup, 1024mb  )

DVD-Rom, NEC 3500 hooked up in a external USB enclosure

D-Link Wireless PCI card

and...

NVidia TNT2 32mb AGP Graphics :pinch: :pinch: :pinch:

To be honest, refurbs are usually better than a new one as they have been tested more thoroughly for a second time and I never mind getting them as it just means it has had extra attention. In the case of Dell, they send a lot of refurbs, not sure if they send new or how many they do send. For gaming, you won't be able to run native resolution with those games on that card. Sims 2 takes so much power even on a 9800 pro nevermind with a 32mb TNT. You would have to run at really low res... lower than 1280x768, to get smooth rates, with all eye candy off. Have you tried those games on your monitor now? If you did, you can compare the resolutions and find out how well things will run.

you wont be able to run any of those unless you ran them at 640x480 on a 10 year old 15" CRT

spend $80 on a new video card

FYI:

1 - Screen size (height) - though Dell told me otherwise, the 2005FPW screen is the same height as 17 inch flat panels -- not 20 inch screens.

2 - Returns - Dell/DHL will apparently pick up the return at no cost to you. Note that they will not credit you the original shipping costs, however.

_____________

Question:

Has anyone seen a coupon for the 2001FP that is valid as of this writing (6/30)? Thanks.

    • I think it depends on what you're looking for to do, and the time you have to spare. With my Dwarf 3, I easily spend 3-4 hour sessions; half an hour driving to an un-light polluted place, unpacking and setting up the smart scope + tripod for equatorial tracking, mucking around with settings, maybe shoot some calibration frames, spending a few hours shooting, merging with past photo sessions, etc. It's crazy how time flies and I often get home later than I expected. It's something I still need to set aside a good part of an evening to do, all in all. For one session, where you often need like four for best results when it comes to deep space objects. With practice, I can probably begin cutting time here but I think where smart scopes find their home is among people who love to shoot the night sky but don't have the spare time to go deep with the "navigator level" attunement to the night sky itself. Having said this, _if_ you have even more time to spend on this hobby, it will probably be even more rewarding to do it more by hand and learn the skies and the details of how it all works.

    • Dell, HP PCs ran into endless reboot, BitLocker recovery loops but Windows 11 isn't to blame by Sayan Sen Last month Neowin reported on a major issue on Dell systems wherein a bug in its official support tool was leading to endless blue screen of death (BSOD) and restarts. Following our report, Dell officially acknowledged its SupportAssist-related crash issue, confirming that the culprit is not Microsoft's operating system but rather a faulty version of its own remediation software. In a newly published support advisory, Dell stated that version 5.5.16.0 of Dell SupportAssist Remediation and Alienware SupportAssist Remediation can trigger blue screen errors and unexpected system restarts. The company notes that the problematic component operates independently of the main SupportAssist application, meaning users should not remove the primary SupportAssist software when troubleshooting the issue. According to Dell, the crashes are linked specifically to the SupportAssist Remediation service, which is bundled with SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools, and as such it has since released an updated version, 5.5.16.1, which is said to resolve the problem. Affected users are advised to first verify whether version 5.5.16.0 is installed by checking the Installed Apps section in Windows Settings. If so, Dell recommends updating SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools through either SupportAssist's "Update Software" feature or Dell Command Update. Dell also advises users to back up important data before performing the update and to ensure systems remain connected to power throughout the installation process. If you are still having issues though make sure to report to the Dell support forum. As it turns out though Dell is not the only PC maker currently dealing with update-related headaches as HP is also facing a separate but probably equally frustrating issue involving recent Windows Secure Boot updates that were released with recent Windows 11 Patch Tuesdays. Similar to Dell, HP also put up its own support article where it explains the issue. The company says that affected devices could hit a brick wall when booting as they run into a BitLocker recovery loop after the April 2026 updates. The problem appears to affect systems wherein the new UEFI Secure Boot CA 2023 certificates fail to apply properly. As such affected users will find themselves entering their recovery key over and over again despite the system otherwise functioning normally. HP says such PCs should be updated to the latest available BIOS version and configured with the necessary Secure Boot certificates before installing Microsoft's Windows 11 Patch Tuesday updates. Systems that are already experiencing the problem may require BIOS configuration changes to restore normal boot behavior. Admins can find information regarding that in the support article here on HP's official website.
