I'm sure it's been said before... it's not guns who kill people, it's people who kill people. Guns that are handled properly and safely are completely fine with me. I have been using rifles and pisols since I was thirteen and i've always been taught proper safety procedures. I plan on passing that down to my kids later on down the road.

I live in South Africa where the crime rate is pretty bad, but I never had or never want to own a gun. Here are some facts about handguns in America:

People who keeps guns at home have a 72% greater chance of being killed by firearms and are 3.44 times more likely to commit suicide than those who do not keep guns at home

FACT: In 2001, gun violence killed 29,573 Americans:

11,348 in homicides (38% of all US gun deaths)

16,869 in suicides (57% of all US gun deaths)

802 in unintentional shootings (3% of all US gun deaths), and

554 in legal interventions or undetermined incidents (2% of all US gun deaths)

I loath these things, I will not allow them in my house. Just as a matter of fact I must point out that I have done military service and have seen active duty so it is not as if I have no first hand experience of these things. Guns are not for me.

Yeah those numbers sound bad, but lets put them into perspective:

According to the National Center for HEalth Statistics:

You are:

- Twice as likely to suffocate and die on a swalloed object than die from a handgun

- 7 times more likely to be poisoned

- 10 times more likely to die from falling

- 31 times more likely to die in an automobile accident

According to Kaiser Permnente (Major HMO):

Medical mistakes kill over 400,000 people per year, about 286 times more than the rate of people killed accidentally by handguns

20% of gun homicides occur in just 4 cities with less than 6% of the population, and all of these cities, New York, Chicago, Detroit, and DC, have a virtual ban on handguns!

According to the Nat'l Safety Council, there are more guns in the US than Cars (228M to 207M), but you are 31 times more likely to be killed accidentaly by a car than a firearm despite registration and licensure being required for cars!

I don't personally own any right now, but I use them for work, and I will, at some point, get some personal firearms and likely a concealed carry permit. As for the comments about not wanting to live somewhere where you might need a gun to feel safe, then you don't really feel safe, think about what you say before you say it: if you don't, someone else there does, for your safety, and you depend on them. If I call the police because someone is breaking into my house, if he's still there when the police get there, they will use up to lethal force to protect themselves (and my property and me, I would hope).

And as for the argument, "just cooperate, because they'll shoot you first," that's unlikely. Unless they know you, they don't know you're armed. Regardless, he's either willing to end your life or he's bluffing.

I just bought a Bushmaster XM-15 while the assault weapons ban is defunct. It took about 5 minutes to buy here in Ohio. Also have a Marlin 30/30 lever action, Browning semi auto 12 Gauge shotty, 2 .38 handguns and 2 .22 rifles.

BTW there are never any children in this house, I would never display any firearm where a child could even see it, and keep it locked up tight. I hope the other gun owners feel the same.

Yep I own guns, I use them too. I have a Special Run Remington .270Win Excel 710 Camo for hunting, a 30/30 Lever Action, Remington 870XL 12Ga shotgun and a Marlin 925 .22LR for Varmint hunting. All my guns have trigger locks with a key, and the key is on my person with the rest in a locked safe. The ammo is kept in a seperate location even though my son is only a year old. I would rather have good practices already.

This is my Rifle

When you bought your first gun, and went home, did you suddenly feel inclined to murder people?

IMO, if you live in a country that you feel the need

of having a gun to protect (self defence) yourself,

then the problem is there...

I live in the UK, where legal guns are particularly rare (though apparently common amongst criminals), and my father owns a shotgun. The area has a very low crime rate but he wants to be prepared for the worst case scenario (e.g. global warming leads to a tidal wave that cuts off food supplies and people start rioting/rampaging). It seems very unlikely but I agree with the logic (what's the harm in keeping a gun if it is never taken out, advertised around or used as an ego tool?). I believe my brother also has a licence but doesn't own any weapon - I went down the local shooting club a few times and found it fun but it didn't really interest me much. Obviously if you have a gun for fear of everyday crime then that is a sad state of affairs, but preparing for the worst is a sensible precaution.

When you bought your first gun, and went home, did you suddenly feel inclined to murder people?

Umm, NO. What the heck kind of question is that? I'm a ex US Army medic and registered EMT. I know what damage guns can do to the human body, I've never blamed the guns, I blame the bad guys.

When you bought your first gun, and went home, did you suddenly feel inclined to murder people?

When you go home, do you make fun of black people, jews, and anybody else different then you?

Or are you not that ignorant; just ignorant enough to try and impress your morals on those who don't share the same view point as you?

And for the record, I own 2 firearms right now, and I might buy another 1-3 more in the next 6 months.

Actually, it was a question more to poke a hole in the argument that people become violent around guns, but sure, if you want to read it wrong, go right ahead. :)

Then I read it wrong. I haven't read every single post of yours, so I apologize. I read it as you see all black rifles as evil, and that. I didn't see the satire.

I don't own a gun, I never will own a gun.

Since I don't break laws then I don't need one.

I don't know anybody in jail, anybody who's been to jail or anybody that's been arrested.

I have never had my house, my car, my parents house or my parents car ever broken in to.

The only house that I have ever heard of being burglarized was somebody who bragged at the office and their co-worker's teenage son attempted to break in. He was arrested at the scene.

I have confidence that the cops would arrive within a few minutes of dialing 911 and I don't fear for my own personal protection nor my family's.

Sometimes Fred i wonder if you live in a nice quiet bubble called plesantville.

Since I don't break laws then I don't need one.
Ive had this out with you before. The Majority of gunowners dont break any laws. Thje association you make ****es me off abit.

the point?
I have never had my house, my car, my parents house or my parents car ever broken in to.
As most robberies happen during the daylight when the occupants are at work, guns dont solve the problem

Most people that own a gun have them for recreational purposes and harm nobody.
