Apple release new "Get a Mac" ads

Recommended Posts

Actually your hardware supports it, apple just has a few checks in it to prevent it running on non apple hardware.

And most of these comparisons so far have been about macs software, not the operating system.

Seems kinda dumb spending a exorbant amount of money just to run some software.

Well thats a whole other debate between hidden and extra costs. Buying a Mac gives you a capable video and audio editing machine right of the box with no additional cost. Buying a Dell or Gateway gives you no such thing. Making the cost fixed within the price is much more attractive to most people because they feel like they are getting a bargain; making a cheaper product with seperate additional costs seems appealing but often causes people to simply not spend the extra cash.

It's funny that one point is that there's nothing like trial software installed (because Apple controls the entire OS/hardware combo), but mention that MS would control the whole package and the lawsuits would fly.

Actually saying that my Mac came pre-installed with trial software.

Microsoft Office

iWork trial apps Pages and Keynote

And Quicktime is only semi-free I'd call it trialware as to get any real functionality you have to purchase it.

I uninstalled them all except Quicktime which I purchased a Pro license for. So thats pretty much a blatant lie by Apple that there systems don't come with Trial Software as they clearly do.

Is it me or is the 'Mac Guy' that dweeb from Dodge Ball that keeps getting smacked with a wrench and gets squashed by the fat chick?

Yup thats him!, he also had a series long part in Ed where he was once again a dweeb with no self-confidence.

I like Macs, but Apple's ads offer an uneven comparison. They say that it doesn't support much hardware while at the same time you have to uninstall trial software.

Well if you build yourself, then you don't get trial software but you don't have all the drivers, if you get pre-built then you get all the drivers but you might get trial software too. Which one are you comparing to, one or the other. The Ads make out that Windows PCs are incapable of Digital Imaging.

Windows Updates? You just need Automatic Updates.... Doesn't Mac OSX has Software Update, which works EXACTLY the same way? Where was the comparison to iLife, it just said that the Mac to use digital images and make DVDs, Windows can do that too.

And going back to the whole driver thing, who cares? It's a once off installation, there are Windows drivers for almost EVERYTHING, much more drivers available than a Mac because most hardware is intended to be used with Windows. Why are a lack of preinstalled drivers important, when the Mac has a lack of APPLICATIONS that is available for Mac, where can I get the software I use for my work? where can I get Games? I got to Dual-Boot into Boot Camp to do this.... oh wait that defeats the point that Apple are trying to make.

Haha...pwn3d..

And yeh...I agree those ads are really biased and only target windows disadvantages compared to apple advantages

It's funny how they've used "I've gotta download new drivers" as a dig. That is because you can use mightily superior hardware with Windows, Apple! How silly of them. If they're going to promote the OOBE, they could at least do so without unintentionally highlighting the fact their hardware is so limited.

Touch? still doesn't work because the video cards are sucky.

And Work vs. Home is pretty weak. Funny how they didn't bring games into the equation...

Apple should really be promoting the unquestionably good aspects of their service. They're shooting themselves in the foot with pretty much every point they make. Though of course if you don't knowanything> about computers, the advertising may be influential.

Exactly...One sided arguement just trying to get random n00bs to buy a Mac, only to find out all the disadvantages as well :||

Weird, what part of opening the box and following the HUGE colour-coded paper that tells them where to plug their USB keyboard and mouse confused them? Was it the extra detail of plugging in the monitor that threw them for a loop? Or the part at boot where it says, "Press any key to continue", not once but TWICE even? Man, I sure needed a nap after all of that heavy thinking when I did it, I'll tell you that.:

Smaller market share = bashing in advertising. Burger King does it (or just outright copies McD), Pepsi does it (Pepsi taste tests compared to Coke) and Apple does it (PCs suck, we don't).

Haha, so true;))

Hmm, that's fair, but I'd say Adobe Premier wins by a landslide against iMovie.

So, although Premier is far from free, and far from bundled, the "PCs can't edit videos" argument put forth in the commercial isstill> rubbish.

Yeh, some of those 'points' they use have no real basis or anything..

Yeh...as i said...no real basis behind their 'facts':

I find those ads quite off putting in fact and quite misleading, but all I can say to Apple is good luck and hope you enjoy ripping people off without telling them the full facts

You know what I'd love to see? A Windows user portrayed like the average Windows user, we'll say roughly 30 something, doing normal things on his computer with no problems like the vast majority of us...then we'll have a 12 year old kid with acne all over his oily face, he'll be wearing a shiny iPod-white suit, he'll be trying to look cool while still failing at life because no one really cares about him.

I wasn't planning on getting into this, but this comment is just plain stupid. Macs have a large market share in higher-education - that means researchers, doctors and scientists as well as students. My lab, which is running on a 20 million dollar budget uses mainly Macs, and we are definitely not "failing at life".

I understand your frustration when an ad doesn't go your way, especially one so emotionally involving (end sarcasm), but making sweeping generalizations about Mac users doesn't help the situation.

OSX will work on any PC, but wat kind of hardware support do you get ? none, that is what. ever tried a patched OSX install, yes it will work fine, but have any sort of graphics card other than specific Ati Ones and the computer goes into a freak out and restricts resolutions to 1024 x 768 and below, with no QE and QC.

Network support ? Nil pwah on any format other than an Intel platform, which basically makes sense because apple use an intel platform.

UNLESS you have an INTEL platform with a ATI graphics card OSX will not work properly. IF you decide to use AMD X2 chips, and DFI mobo's and a nVidia graphics cards, nothing works.

Built-in sound works, but thats about it.

I aint flaming OSX, but it would take a hell of a lot of dev work to get it booting on a PC properly, with full hardware support.

And about the BSOD bull****, i've had many rigs in my time, all overclocked to the high hills, and never had a BSOD. An Apple mac crashes in XP becuase it is not meant to run XP, at all, nothing to do with the newness of the hardware, as a Conroe Engineering Sample at 4+Ghz will run perfectly with a 7950GX2, so it has nothing to do with hardware.

Since this is a windows forum, most people will argue that the ads are crap, which imo they are, as right now i have my web editing suite open, along with Apache Web Server, Mcafee AV and firewall, and MSN Live Messenger.

Using 370mb of memory. Dont get me wrong, MAC's are nice toys, but windows machines are for power users that like to game, yet want the option to also be productive.

I saw the title of the topic and thought there would be a lot of the usual Apple/Mac bashing and I was right. But I never expected 10 pages of it. Well done Neowin, you have outdone yourself this time.

As to the ads, to be expected of Apple I guess. Personally, I don't like them all to much. Although I did find the bit in work vs home ad where the PC guy says "This light grey area could represent hang out time and this dark grey area could represent just kicking it." rather amusing. That made me laugh out loud.

This is typical of Apple advertising... it's not about advertising their strengths but bashing their rivals. It's the same as all the benchmarks they use on their site, which are usually completely biased and very, very misleading. I really liked the style of the advert and thought the Mac guy seemed pretty cool, I just couldn't stand the actual content of them.

hang on, just a minute............

.........

:pinch:

pfhaa ha ha ahaaaggaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

totally laughing my ass off!!!!!!

proves whatever i've said about a mac, you can get stuff done and fast without some annoying popups or 'hey are you sure' messages taunting you all the time.

i run 6+ websites daily and 4 of those are on .net and god would i wish to switch it all to opensouce php, but no, it's too 'new' to the company and unknown.

the others i do run on php and they are more powerful and easy to put together than the others.

why the point....

well the .net ones i have to manage on windows machine, the others i manage on a mac, wirelessly, i'm not in the office and i get more work done and faster on the apple.

also it's easy to setup out of the box, it's pretty easy to firewall it and make it secure and the virus scanner has no footprint at all.

along with access to a proper linux terminal (rather than ugh! dos) it nails windows at every side.

ok, don't get me wrong, windows isn't all that bad, and it's still the most popular o/s out there, but if your a new startup trying to make it in the world opensource and linux are your friends for life, they won't suck your wallet dry and they will always fix themselves.

i wish windows was more robust and could handle itself better but that will never happen.

did i mention the battery life?

have fun guys,

:D

I can't believe how immature some of you are.

If you don't like Apple, fine, that's great, I'll give you a nice shiny sticker if you want - but for gods sake, stop flaming. If you can't be mature and discuss something in a civil manor, why bother wasting your time and everyone else's with your useless comments?

That has absolutely nothing to do with the Windows OS, have a talk with Google/AOL/and every other crappy vendor putting crap on new computers...It's not like non-Mac users like/use 95% of that utter crap anyways. Also, there is likely going to be several updates for your Mac out of the box as well. Just fyi...

No there are not, if you buy it from the Apple store, take it home and set it up you can be running in less than 10 minutes...all the updates are already on the computer....if more come out you do have to download them, but the past two Macs I have bought have not had anything to download right out of the box.... And everyday people really do use all that crap that vendors put on their XP computers ugh! I hate it :p

If I was Microsoft, I'd just do an commercial from some top giant LAN event. Filled with a couple of thousand people ages 14-30 something. I'd film walking around the event looking for people gaming with a MAC.

At the end of the commercial I'd just end it with "Good thing you didn't buy a MAC!"

So, what you're saying is that you do actually have to download updates then?

Regarding your second point - the reason that trial software exists on XP is because companies would scream lawsuit if MS tried to provide all the functionality out of the box. Apple has a low market share, so it doesn't matter as much to the companies losing out.

Edit: minor point, but please stop calling them 'MAC's, they're 'Mac's. MAC is an acronym for a networking term, not the name of a computer.

Edited by Kirkburn

They are no more misleading than the average commercial. What lies? Do you use both? I use both OS and XP more than OS X because that is what I use at work.

I need to use both to know that something running Windows can do everything that the ad says they can't?

You keep on saying the Apple ads had falsehoods but you have not backed it up.

It just works out of the box. Find XP (a selling point in one of the ads). Whoops, not there.

It (the getamac site) claims that iTunes is all you'll ever need to know about running your OS.

Know iTunes? You know the Mac.

You?ll recognize features like library collection, playlist arrangement, and instant search in many Mac programs. So you?re something of a Mac expert already.

States that Windows PCs are infected within 1 hour online.

A Mac offers a built-in firewall, doesn?t advertise its existence on the nd isn?t compromised within an hour of being turned on. on.

Instant video chat; so do we all have to be running Macs? Because it says it works out of the box (remember, that's a selling point), and I don't want to have to investigate whether or not my friends are on Macs also.

Unpack your new PC and you?ll be amazed at what it offers. A bundle of mismatched software and that nagging feeling that your desktop has just been sold to the highest bidder. Of course, it does have that cool calculator. Oh, and a clock. That?ll come in handy when you?re ticking off the hours it takes you to uninstall all the software you don?t want and buy all the software you do.

Bring home a new Mac and you bring home an OS with more than 200 built-in features ? including Dashboard widgets, Mail, and iChat AV, among other cool things ? and the award-winning suite of iLife applications.

So, bundling software is not OK, but if it's on a Mac then it's OK? "Bundling sucks, unless we do it. Then it's hip and cool."

I can't believe how immatu:no:ome of you are.

If you don't like Apple, fine, that's great, I'll give you a nice shiny sticker if you want - but for gods sake, stop flaming. If you can't be mature and discuss something in a civil manor, why bother wasting your time and everyone else's with your useless comments?

It's not flaming to call them out on blatantly misleading advertising. It's also not flaming to deny that Apple did that. But back it up.

Haha...pwn3d..

What do you expect though? It is a Apple marketing commercial. They are going to play to their strong points, and the opponents weak points. I happen to like the commericals.

    • Microsoft launches Godot Sample to streamline Xbox PC game development on the engine by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Microsoft today announced a new endeavor that aims to make it simpler for Godot developers to get their products into the Xbox PC ecosystem. Dubbed the "XBOX Godot Sample," this is a new public reference for developers using the open-source engine. This is set to serve as an example of how Microsoft GDK, Xbox Services, and PlayFab can be integrated into their projects. The sample is available now on GitHub as a working example. This covers key features in gaming projects that developers may need to release their projects on Xbox PC, with everything from matchmaking and game sign-in to gamepad compatibility with Godot being covered. This release is being called the first step in giving Godot developers the tools to bring their games over to Xbox PC, with more changes to come based on feedback and issue reports. However, the company was clear that this is not related to bringing Godot projects to Xbox consoles. The engine's open development model stops it from accessing console SDKs due to the requirement of NDAs and legal contracts. Here's how it explained this Godot sample project's focus: This is a source-only sample, not a product. It's MIT-licensed at the wrapper layer; the GDK and PlayFab dependencies still require their own installs and license acceptance, consistent with our other XBOX samples. There is no set update cadence for support or maintenance. We’ll watch the repo, monitor issues, and iterate where it makes sense, but this isn't a commercial release. That said, we’re excited to hear your feedback and see any community PRs, as we evolve this together. This is the first step in bringing Godot for XBOX on PC. We plan to evolve it over time based on what the community tells us is most valuable. This sample is built specifically for XBOX on PC. It doesn’t include support for XBOX Series X|S or XBOX One. If you’re already building for XBOX Series X|S or XBOX One, please talk with your XBOX representative. If not, you can get started by signing up here. Game developers can find the XBOX Godot Sample by heading to GitHub over here. Documentation on how to get started with Godot for building an Xbox PC project can be seen here.
    • I don't understand the vision. Do people really want to buy a new computer from Dell with 6 browsers installed? We all keep asking for Microsoft to stop having so much junk on their OS, and adding a bunch of browsers seems to go against that. Ideally, we would just be asked what browser we want during OOBE but Google is just going to pay Dell a bunch of money to include Chrome. Additionally, would you want your phones to start including all the browsers too when you get them? The only thing I ever wanted was to be able to uninstall IE or edge and I believe you are now able to. I do agree that microsoft needs to chill with their "are you sure you don't want to try edge before you install chrome" ads when going to download chrome.
    • It is notable that around 70% of web browser users choose Google Chrome. However, it is puzzling why anyone on Windows would opt for Chrome when Microsoft Edge is often superior in many aspects and comes pre-installed. Edge collects less data, uses less RAM, and is more optimized for Windows as a native Microsoft product. While some may point to bloat in Edge, much of it can be removed with simple tools, requiring no more effort than installing Chrome. Meanwhile, Chrome reportedly downloads large amounts of AI data (4 GB) without explicit consent. I'm sure you Chrome users love that, or? Here is one example of a tool that doesn't even need to be installed to be able to use: https://github.com/TheBobPony/MSEdgeTweaker Although Microsoft’s aggressive promotion of Edge may be questionable, the browser’s current advantages make it a preferable choice over Chrome today, even if Chrome may have been better in the past.
    • JetBrains rolls out IntelliJ IDEA update with Markdown preview fixes and more by David Uzondu Image via JetBrains IntelliJ 2026.1.3 from JetBrains has landed, bringing several highly requested bug fixes that target common UI glitches and terminal rendering issues. If you run tmux inside the integrated terminal, the IDE no longer renders the cursor above the active line. The Markdown preview bug, which was fixed in this release, had annoyed developers for quite some time, as the preview pane failed to render images saved outside the project directory. Instead of displaying the actual image, the IDE simply showed a broken image icon, a problem that stuck around for two years before this update. Over on Windows, developers running WSL can now use wsl.exe to spin up their environments without losing terminal functionality. In previous builds, launching a terminal shell with something like wsl.exe -d ubuntu inside a Windows-based project broke both shell integration and active process detection. Other bug fixes in this release include: An issue where Gradle sync incorrectly reported success as a failure on WSL when using Gradle 9.5.0. A syntax highlighting bug that flagged valid Java for-loop initialization blocks with multiple statements as incorrect. A warning bug that triggered a false non-null local variable alert when using JSpecify annotations. A database generation bug that hid the option to use a DELETE statement instead of a TRUNCATE checkbox. A Kotlin highlighting failure where an assertion error in the Gradle redundant library inspection broke error highlighting. A UI bug where the ComboBox popup lacked a maximum height restriction. A Snowflake syntax error where DataGrip failed to support the "create temp" command. A Svelte syntax parsing failure that incorrectly flagged quotes inside inline expressions. A VCS repository manager deadlock that triggered thread pool exhaustion. A memory leak where the LazyTree component kept all previous versions of a tree in memory. IntelliJ 2026.1.3 is the third bug fix release for the IntelliJ 2026.1 series. The first one landed back in April with a fix for the WSL Python interpreter freeze, another fix for guest participants using Emmet abbreviations, and corrected WildFly server deployment errors.
