.Neo
System/Applications: The ability to add custom filetypes to the Spotlight ignore list; Proper NTFS Support; More games (Windows Vista comes with pretty cool ones); More Dictionary languages (Dutch, German, French etc.); Advanced Live/.NET support for iChat; Ability to place widgets on the Desktop; Fast user switching from the Apple Menu instead of Menu Extras icon only; Expos?-like solution for Safari's tabs. Doesn't have to be full screen like the real Expos?. Paint-like application. Interface:b> Removal of Brushed (Metal); Updated Aqua interface; Updated System Icons; New animations/effects, especially for ALL open/closing windows. Misc:b> Improved Finder performance; Improved Safari performance: Flash, loading of images, Downloading etc.
MonkeyClaw Veteran Posted August 30, 2006 Veteran Share Posted August 30, 2006 I say instead of improving finder performance, just make a new finder. Something with much more power, tabs (I have found myself trying to do command click on folders as if it was safari, lol), easier metatag access, overall speed, and I dunno, stuff I can't think of. Finder is pretty good but it is buggy, very inconsistent, and not quite a speed demon. Other than that, I agree with all that you say Neowave, updated icons (the current ones still kick ass but updates are always good), and the animations/effects is good. I would like to see some subtle effects throughout the system to make it more fluid and organic feeling, something that really encapsulates the word aqua, lol. I don't know if we will see this but we can always wish.
.Neo
Yeah, I agree. Finder's Aqua interface is very inconsistent and overal it just chokes on large files or large amounts of files.
shodan
I really hope they will rewrite Finder in cocoa... it's increbible that the main application of OS X is still written in carbon, come on Apple, this should have a meaning on 10.1 or 10.2, but for 10.5 don't you think it's time to move on? And I agree with Neowave, the system icons really needs a revamp... :D
Timan Veteran Posted August 31, 2006 Veteran Share Posted August 31, 2006 About the flash performance in safari. The latest nightly of webkit has it fixed. YES you can now watch your flash pr0n movies in the background smooth as silk.
MonkeyClaw Veteran Posted August 31, 2006 Veteran Share Posted August 31, 2006 I really do not think the icons are that bad, I mean we know they are going to make them 512x512 but I think they are pretty good looking even if they are what 6 years old? Considering how little the GUI has changed since the original OS X yet still looks amazingly modern is a true testament to how well Apple designed OS X back then. But icon tweaks are welcomed though I will not be disappointed if they aren't. A cocoa finder though is a must. It is surprising that they have yet to rewrite it in cocoa considering its the technology they have been pushing all these years.
topher1078
Proper NTFS support? As in both read and write support? That would be huge.

Do you know if WMP videos embedded in Safari move choppy as well when running in the background? ...and I don't watch porn...j/k!
MonkeyClaw Veteran Posted August 31, 2006 Veteran Share Posted August 31, 2006 Same here, I hated having the choppy playback while the window was in the background. I always wondered why it did that...
Miran
I just wish they would fix the memory issues with Safari. Every couple of days I need to close it and re-open because it is using like 500MB of RAM.

The system icons (note: Not the application icons!) look extremely dated and need to be updated to current standards: The Desktop icon still features the 10.0 Aqua Desktop and Menubar and overal the Folder icons are pretty pixelated. A cocoa finder though is a must. It is surprising that they have yet to rewrite it in cocoa considering its the technology they have been pushing all these years. I don't understand that either. I don't understand that either. You do make a good point, some of the icons are outdated and the folders are a bit pixelated at small sizes or well not pixelated but rather aliased on the edges. So yea I guess they need some updating. To get the latest webkit http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18700 Thanks a bunch man.
khaos34
Thanks a bunch man. Don't forget to check out the Webkit Blog to see a lot of the big things they implement in Webkit. Seems like it's one of the more advanced rendering engines out there :)
