They aren't showstoppers, they're the 500 most obscure bugs found (as in problems in localization, etc), not something thats going to bring down your system. I'm sure Windows XP, Server 2003, and 2000 all had a similar target - you have to ship the software eventually. If you didn't set a realistic goal (see Longhorn project pre-2004) you'll never get there.

And if you look at it this way - there's about 50,000,000 lines of code in Vista. On average, thats a bug every 100,000 lines of code. Pretty good I'd say. A hell of a lot better average than most software out there.

Finally, a voice of reason! Most of this thread is EXACTLY the reason that so many companies are reluctant to open anything up for public review. That, and the mac/linux fanboy's who actually believe their OS of choice is bug-free (as in, 0 bugs) feel the need to chime in.

Clue to the angry zealots: every single piece of software you've ever used, on any platform, has a never ending series of bugs. Read and learn a little about the software lifecycle before you expunge your "Knowledge" in any forum or venue.

So we all know Microsoft is planing to release a RC2 build of vista later on today. I want to know what do you want to see updated, fixed or even added in this new and final test build.

My thoughts:

  • Performance to be updated enough to fell like the final version.
  • The new maximize window color options ( i heard it may start in the RC2 build instead of the RTM build, i hope its true)
  • No more of the 9x and xp era icons and dialog boxes.
  • An official boot screen.
  • official sounds.
  • New wallpapers

there may be more and if i find any I'll add them to this list....

I for one am not eagerly anticipating the release of RC2, particularly because of the fact that I have to back up my personal files left in Vista (heh, I've used Vista to the point where my daily homework lies in the Vista HD), pull out another DVD-R (I've spent 4 DVDs on Beta 2, Pre-RC1, RC1, and 5728, plus probably one CD for Longhorn 4051), reformat, burn, reinstall drivers...

Good thing this is a long weekend. :cool:

-Spell checking for IE

-New Screensavers (the ones MS has in the current builds have to be placeholders for the real ones, I hope, since there are no options to be set in the current included screensavers)

-New Wallpapers @ 1600x1200 (the wallpapers in the current builds are dead boring)

-New color choices for Vista Basic Theme

-A real new Windows Mail, not just Outlook Express with a dead ugly blue bar

-A real new Paint (why is it still "MS" Paint - shouldn't it be Windows Paint?)

-Reduced resource usage (~800MB of RAM utilised after just logging in is ridiculous)

-Updated NVidia drivers

There are probably lots more things that I missed.

firefox 2.0 also has a spellchecker,and if this and even a download mananger in IE7 would be great. but knowning them, IE8 will have these features.

We had these since what? December CTP or February CTP?. I agree, we NEED new walpapers and like you said high res.ones.

true, but again who uses paint? In vista we have the "sniping tool" for screenshots...

i have 512MB and planing to upgrade to the max my laptop can have. 2GB

sorry to dissapoint you, but those are the screensavers that'll be. The reason there's no options is because they didnt have enough time to build the frontend. You can tweak the screensavers via the registry.

heh. not likely to happen. IE is in RC already. RC doesn't add features; only bugfixes and finishing up features. spell check is a new feature (unless they've been working on it since the beginning but didn't show up till now - in which case, it can still happen)

those are the real thing. it's been said on one of the MS blogs that they wouldn't even add more options to the current new screensavers cause there was no time for extra UI work and all

i believe this is gonna happen :) i hope so. a nice collection of wallpapers and all :)

choosing colors for Vista Basic is a feature. not happening. UNLESS they add a set of color variations as they did with luna (extra themes) - which could happen.

how many times does this have to be said? Vista uses more RAM if you have more RAM. and it'll let go of RAM if your system needs it. at 768MB Vista uses ~300MB of RAM under the same situation as you said. it scales for cache and speeding up launching of apps.

This is totally pointless. The build is done. We will get what we get.

Well, it may be pointless :rolleyes: but its a discussion of what we like to see in the new RC2. they must have some new stuff besides bug fixes or they wouldn't be having a RC2. they would have saved all the bug fixes for RTM.

and I'm NOT talking about major ones. I know that's not possible.
