What he said. ;)

No point jumping the gun on something as critical as a Service Pack.

Until the final bits appear on Microsoft's Connect website, I wouldn't trust any torrented 'releases'.

Anyway, my Vista RTM PC is working great, has been for over 12 months, so waiting another 4 days or even two weeks won't hurt.

There's no promise that the final bits will appear on Connect, and MS has given every indication that they won't appear on Connect.

Microsoft has given no indication that final bit's won't appear on connect. In fact they have given a clue that it will, if you read carefully.

thats not final build this is the new build that will be final that someone already posted

6001.18000.080126-2040

they found a major bug in the 6001.18000.080118-1840

so on february 4th you will be able to get

6001.18000.080126-2040 via wu

Is this now set in stone, Monday is 'the' day for final bits?

Have to ask, how do you know this news exactly, can I have 'source' with that? ;)

monday 4

If you have been waiting for Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista, well, you can now mark your calender. We just received word that Microsoft has scheduled Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for release to manufacturer (RTM) on Monday, February 4, 2008. That's just 3 days away! The OEMs will also receive Windows Vista Service Pack 1 during that week.

Microsoft will be deploying Service Pack 1 in two "waves". Wave 0, which is the one released on February 4, will only include five languages - English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese. The second wave, Wave 1, is scheduled for release 1-2 weeks later, and will cover all 36 basic languages, including Chinese.

Microsoft claims Windows Vista SP1 will provide key improvements on the security, performance and reliability of Windows Vista by providing :

* All previously released updates since RTM

* Performance and reliability improvements in core scenarios such as file copy, network browsing, and improved response time to resume from sleep.

* Support for new types of hardware, and several emerging standards.

* There are improvements to the administration experience. One of the most important changes we’re making is that BitLocker now supports encrypting for multiple volumes.

Of course, Service Pack 1 will also disable two common methods of hacking Windows Vista, namely the OEM BIOS exploit and the Grace Timer exploit.

i did with that ISO that's out there. It just feels nice to actually have it clean installed with it being slipstreamed. I've always hated upgrading, Plus with all my normal apps installed the C drive is only 6.98GB instead of the 12.9GB it was before. I installed RTM then installed the WU patch for downloading SP1 RC Refresh 2 and that just doubled everything. Now with it integrated i can have some space again (my C partition is only 20GB which is more than fine :) All other stuff goes to my D and F drives :) )

if 6001.18000.080118.1840 is the RTM build, I take it as those of us with refresh 2 wouldn't need to upgrade, since that's the same build?

If a newer build is tagged as RTM, you will have to uninstall Refresh 2 before you can install RTM.

New build ? 6001.18000.080131-1830

Source?

And guys, anyone claiming that <insert build here> is the final and is coming feb 4th, please post a RELIABLE source.

TechARP does NOT count as they failed to provide their source.

For now, there isn't any confirmed info, just a lot of rumors, and a leaked build that may or MAY NOT be the final release.

There is no source, ;) just people taking 'educated' guesses. We will know when Microsoft makes the build available to the public and probably not before.

And that's EXACTLY what I thought, and tried to say ;)

Glad to see some of us have a bit of common sense hey Frothy? :p

my suggestion is "dont download yet unless you actually know what you are doing"

as for vista, i gave up on it a long time ago

Then you're missing out on the improvements made to it that make it a better operating system than XP.

so 6001_18000_X86_FRE_LONGHORN_RTM_080118_1840_WAVE0.IMG is final build then? just want someone to clear things up...

On January 29, a Microsoft spokeswoman said Vista SP1 had yet to be officially released to manufacturing. The recent SP1 Release Candidate (RC) Refresh 2 is not the RTM build, the spokeswoman said. ?And we?re not commenting on the build number,? she said, when I asked whether the ?18000″ build number was the RTM version.

    • The Trump administration doesn't want you to use OpenAI's GPT-5.6 without its approval by David Uzondu Image via @realDonalTrump (X) As OpenAI prepares the release of its next model, GPT 5.6, the White House has instructed the company to limit the distribution of the software to a small group of government-approved partners instead of the general public, as it has done with previous releases. According to The Information, OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman sent an internal memo to staff on Thursday explaining that the federal government will approve access "customer by customer" during an initial preview phase. Altman noted in the communication that this restrictive rollout is "not [their] long-term model" for software deployment, and the company plans to work toward a "more sustainable" distribution method later. CNN said that both OpenAI and the Trump administration view the capabilities of GPT 5.6 on the same level as Anthropic's Mythos and that government officials intend to "collaborate with frontier AI labs to develop shared approaches for addressing the challenges of scaling this technology." The latest restriction comes just weeks after the US Commerce Department decided to restrict Fable, a version of Mythos with extra safety "guardrails" to prevent users from exploiting software vulnerabilities. Not long after the release, though, researchers at Amazon found a way to bypass these restrictions, prompting an aggressive response from federal authorities. The government ordered Anthropic to cut off access for non-US citizens located outside the US, non-US citizens living inside the US, and incredibly, even Anthropic's own foreign-born employees. Anthropic now appears to be building a workaround to resolve this compliance block with an update to its Privacy Policy that introduces a category called "Verification Data" to handle KYC and Digital IDs. This setup could mandate digital identity checks to filter users by nationality, requiring a government-issued ID and facial biometric data. Who knows? Maybe in the future, you would have to scan your US Passport or State ID to prove your citizenship before you are allowed to chat with Fable 5 (or any other model).
    • When Windows 7 was released I created an AutoHotkey script that uses Alt+` as a keyboard shortcut to move a window across monitors. I have been using that script for over 15 years and this is the first time I have come across another app that uses the same shortcut!
    • I called it last year that they wouldn't end support when they said there would. There are too many people still on Windows 10 waiting for something better to upgrade to and 11 ain't it! The recent promises of fixing Windows 11's many problems is nice, but unless they deliver on those promises in a big way then I expect customers will still want to stick with 10.
