Opdahl: Reach goes well beyond what anyone?s done before

July 19th, 2010 @ 08:06

By Joe Anderson

Chris Opdahl, Halo Reach?s lead campaign designer, has said Bungie?s next game will have moments which go ?well beyond what anyone has done before on a console.?

Speaking in response to community questions, Opdahl talked about the size of the task facing the team.

?We absolutely could not have made Reach without all of the engineering magic that went on. The sheer volume of code changes and how much more we can do because of them is staggering,? he said.

?We have imposters, AI LOD, a new memory management system, networking (both synchronous and asynchronous), neuticle system, Big Battle flocks, new flying vehicle behaviors, stimulus system, new damage model, physics updates and improvements, perception models, lighting model upgrades? And that is just the few things off the top of my head.

?All of those together allow us to make moments that we have never been able to do in a Halo game. We are also able to achieve a visual fidelity for those moments (at the scale of a Halo encounter that you have come to expect) well beyond what anyone has done before on a console.?

Halo Reach is set to release for Xbox 360 this September, it will be the last Halo game from Bungie as it concentrates on its new, Activision-published IP.

(already buried in a link somewhere in the topic, but it's a long read with lots of details)

Nice, thanks for the link. I didn't read all of it (that's a pretty tall order :)), but the part about the hologram was quite interesting. So it looks like the hologram is computer controlled and it just runs in the direction of your crosshair. If you point the crosshair straight down, it will just stand still. It doesn't say what the hologram will do if you point your crosshair at a wall and engage it (at least not in the part that I read). I'd be interested about that.

And thankfully, you still can't use the jetpack and carry the flag at the same time, regardless of what the Red vs Blue video may have shown :).

While I hate forge with a passion because its a pathetic excuse of a real map editor/creator, I have to say I am impressed with the additions that they have made. It will drive the custom community exponentially farther than the orginal forge. Item locking so it doesnt fall down if you want it suspended, more building structures, phasing objects so they can move through other terrain and objects for easy placement, and the many others. All great features to add. I would really like to see keyboard and mouse placement for easier control of objects and placement. Better yet would be PC integration to creat maps on there and then migrate over. Both of those will probably never happen, but one can dream. But seriously Bungie, thank you for providing these massive improvements.

Now if you can make a legit custom game server browse outside of matchmaking where the lobby host is the game host, this game could be one of the best 360 games out there.

Looks bad ass. My true Special Edition System. I bought the MW2 system because I needed a new 360 and wanted my first NEW one. Well The system looks special edition but i got "boring" ole black controllers.

When I bought ODST, i bought the LE fr the controller, Love the design, and color.

Now this, I get a slim / special art work. Truly Limited Edition and controllers are special. No way to find anymore just like this.

Also, at this moment, posted my Craigslist ad 3-4 hours ago @ 10:30pm cst i believe and just got a offer 20 mins ago @ 1:17 saying they would like to buy it and see pictures.

CAN I HAZ HALO REACH SYSTEM? YES I CAN! Gonna go pre order it today along with paying off starcraft. Im so happy i have multiple jobs.

Now, Ill be buying the System and Legendary Edition, oh god. This game better be worth it(even thou I know it will be).

Oh btw, the sounds just prove its truly a limited edition system!

I'm already yurning for some Forge 2.0 love, lol.

Well, at least Bungie added in the old friends list again which will make it far easier to see friends and join their custom games. Custom games were only so popular in Halo 2 because of how easy it was to jump into them.

    • According to Microsoft, Cause: One of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.   https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/error-codes-in-device-manager-in-windows-524e9e89-4dee-8883-0afa-6bca0456324e
    • This looks awesome, I will request access via Steam later this afternoon!
    • Personally, I’ve found that it’s usually worth investing in the infrastructure you don’t want to replace later, especially cabling. Running Cat6A (or better, depending on your needs) during an upgrade is relatively inexpensive compared to having to re-cable a few years down the road. For switches I try to balance current specs with realistic growth. If my budget allows it Ill choose switches with higher uplink speeds which leaves room for expanding later on, but I don’t necessarily overspend on access ports if the endpoints won’t benefit from them anytime soon. One lesson I’ve learned is that planning for scalability pays off. It’s much easier to add devices, VLANs, or higher-bandwidth workloads when your network infrastructure already supports it than to replace hardware later.  What is your budget like?
    • I hate the term, "future-proof." We saw it back in the 90's / 2000's, if not before. You cannot future-proof anything, since there is no definition of how far into the future you plan on prepping for. Best idea is to tell us what you currently have and what its use is at the moment, and we can then offer ideas about some areas that might need an upgrade and other areas that can be left alone.
    • I can agree that it is being used in a small capacity. I worked for a company where their engineers still used XP, and when asked why it was because their sensor software wasn't compatible with newer operating systems and the software was discontinued so they couldn't upgrade the software. Given that the sensors were still in use by companies, they had to continue using XP to support the sensor, otherwise the price to the company would have gone into the millions or billions. Our response was simple: Ok, you can keep the XP machine. But we're removing it from the network. "But then it can't access the Internet or folder shares!" Yup, kinda the point. If someone wants to continue using an unsecure OS they can do, I have no problem with that. But it should be isolated. Simple. I had a fight with a guy in the engineering department for weeks before he finally relented. But we digress.   What do I plan on doing to commemorate the anniversary? Nothing. I have fond memories of the OS, but at the end of the day it's just an OS. If I had some time I might see if I could install it on my Raspberry Pi for a laugh. But my reflex memory with today's OS ideas would probably get me frustrated and I'd uninstall it after 5 mins.
