Agreed. I wasn't talking about his opinion or mine (or how long I have been here). I was talking about his comment saying I was whining. I guess "whining" is when you don't have the same opinions now. Heaven forbid we say anything negative. Where was he when I was praising the new launch of the site back in December? Where was he when I was supporting the Neowin staff throughout all the troubles they experienced trying to implement the new forums?

Say one negative thing, and then BAM. Sad.

Well I apologise for misreading your post then :) As I say, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and all feedback is appreciated by the administrators - positive or negative. One isn't going to get results if they don't complain about the issues they dislike. It's also down to the conduct of the member and you've been polite in the way you've posted about your issues with the new design, compared to the way some people can act.

Is there a way to get to the forums index (forums mainpage) from the neowin homepage now? I see theres a 100 ways to get to recent posts or the spy but I just want to get to the forums index? Looking pretty schmick btw, however this change seems pretty soon after the last one.

So no update to the forum to allow me to view all watched threads with new posts since my last visit, and a link to go to the first unread post in watched threads?

It's just a new skin, no new features have been added

I really like the new design.

Just a few criticisms though:

  • The Digg, Twitter and FB links in the articles aren't aligned properly. In particular, the bottom border of the Digg logo is cut off.
  • I think the side sections (e.g. Latest Community Activity, Latest Software) need to be "lifted out" of the page a bit more. Maybe add in a border?
  • The article-image cycler at the top needs to be continuous (rather than leaving a 3rd page with only a "IE9 preview" article-image).
  • A tiny annoyance. The tab for Forum Posts in the Latest Community Activity starts off way too close to the left border. Could the gap be increased slightly? Or add the "Show" text, like the main body tabs?
  • Could the overall/main RSS feed banner be added to the "All" news section in the main body?

Ok, thanks for the reply.

I must say the site is looking really nice!

I'm hoping that there will be some added functionality for us forum junkies in the near future, in order to make it easier to find unread posts in threads we are interested in :)

For the time being, whilst the features you've suggested aren't here, I'm wondering if you've taken advantage of the 'Watch topic' and 'Watch forum' links, which send emails to your inbox when there is a new reply ('Watch topic') or a new thread ('Watch forum')? The content of the post is also included in the email. It's not the most convenient of ways to be informed of new replies/threads, but I'm just suggesting it in case you are unaware of it.

That said, you do refer to yourself as a forum junkie, so you're probably aware of all the features :p

Yes, I'm trying to use the watch feature. However, nothing seems to work as I'm used to from other forums:

1. My list of watched topics isn't sorted with unread first

2. There's no "go to first unread post" link in my list of watched topics

That wouldn't be so bad if mail notification worked like in other forums, but:

1. If I set it to "delayed notification", I will lose out on replies (those that are posted in threads I'm not reading right now)

2. If I set it to "immediate notification", I will be spammed with identical notifications as long as I have even a tab open with the forum in it

Other forums will:

1. Sort my watched threads with the thread with the most recent new/unread reply first

2. Give me a link on my watch page I can click to go to the first unread post in each thread

3. Send me just one e-mail about the first unread reply to a watched thread, and no new notifications until I have opened that specific thread

Thanks again for your replies :)

    • Ashes of the Singularity II announced promising even larger battles, new faction, and more by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe A sequel for the 2016-released Ashes of the Singularity has officially been confirmed, and the original developer and publisher duo, Oxide Games and Stardock Entertainment, are back for this release too. Check out the debut trailer above. Ashes of the Singularity II is under development with a significantly expanded team compared to the original, according to today's announcement. It will be adding in a range of fresh units and gameplay systems for real-time strategy fans to dive into. More options for strategic gameplay, more intricate base building, and better enemy AI are listed as features for the new game as well. "Ten years ago, we set a new, literal benchmark for RTS games with massive battles and groundbreaking technology," said Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock Entertainment. "With Ashes of the Singularity II, we’re raising the bar even higher, delivering strategic gameplay depth that RTS fans have always dreamed of.” The storyline of Ashes of the Singularity II will take place in 2031, with a complete single-player campaign, as well as cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes, being confirmed as features today. Moreover, a third faction is joining the fray this time, with Humans joining the fight alongside the original games' Post-Human Coalition and the Substrate. "Obviously, in the first game, the number one request was to have a human faction," adds Wardell. “Back then, we just couldn’t support having thousands of organic, walking, squishy people in the world and thus had to design in favor of machines. We’re really excited to bring the humans into the war and watch how they fare against the massive mechanical armies of the Substrate and PHC.” Ashes of the Singularity II is targeting a broad 2026 release window, with the team hoping to launch the title as the original celebrates its 10th anniversary. Its Steam store page is already up for wishlisting over here. Disclaimer: Neowin's relationship to Stardock
    • How exactly is a FREE image generation model a... Ponzi scheme?!?! I don't love all of these Gen-AI things flooding the market but there's nothing "ponzi" about it.
    • I can't decide if this is tacky or a really fun move for more casual players like myself to enjoy. I'll be curious to see how we are to fly to fictional land masses on a real globe.
