Mac OS X Lion Discussion

UI changes to Mail and iCal (iTunes-like sidebar, toolbar buttons, scrollbars or lack thereof)

It is weird though, because Pages did show the default Aqua scroll bars making it look like the new scroll bars aren't global or something. Or maybe the old scroll bars are still there everywhere, but just hidden when the application is inactive.

Not sure whether I like the fact the toolbar icons going grey everywhere. At least it's consistent with iTunes, but it just looks so damn boring.

Yet you think the market is DirectX dependent.

i said the PC market is dx dependent, keep throwin words in my mouth bud. You know, what PsykX was originally talking about before you went off topic and included consoles and phones?

iPhoto '11 has some interesting new contextual menus:

PS I just love how they properly adapt to the Graphite setting in System Preferences!

I have a solution! Don't mind and don't upgrade. Simple as that.

This is a discussion forum. If that's really your point of view I have no idea what you are doing on Neowin.

So, one thing I just noticed: where'd the tasks go? :p

Also, that guy has a seriously busy week.

I think Apple forgot the Graphite preference exists.

i hope not, i use the graphite look. and that calendar is nothing, you should see mine...

I think Apple forgot the Graphite preference exists.

Apparently so. None of the iLife '11 applications are 64-bit either...

Hilarious how none of the rumors about iLife '11 turned out to be true. Except for the big secret thing: Lack of iDVD and iWeb updates.

I'd like to see Angry Birds brought to the desktop.

Frankly, I'm a fan of all these changes. I never liked the "pill" buttons used in Leopard and Snow Leopard, they didn't match up with the rest of the UI anywhere. I much prefer the flatter iTunes UI, and glad it will be taken system-wide in Lion. And finally, Apple has killed the Aqua scroll bars which should have died with Leopard. Frankly, I never use the scroll bar anymore, with trackpads and scroll wheels on mice.

But will the iOS-like scrollbars be taken systemwide? If not, then I hope the iTunes-like scrollbars become alternates.

I'm liking the changes to Mail & iCal but I don't like the absence of the colours in the sidebar (same goes for iTunes X). It just looks too bland.

It seems to be the new trend. After the insane gloss and shine era a few years ago, the pendulum's finally swinging back the other way, flat, few colors (Or no colors) and out of the way. I really like it.

Way to quote me out of context. ;)

I said if you see a sneak peak of something not to be released for at least half a year and start bitching around just because you don't like what you have seen and don't accept any other opinion but your own, then you should rather just don't mind and don't install it, when it comes out. That's all.

I am all in favor of a nice discussion and all but judging from just a few early demos and saying everything is going to be crap... then I don't see what you are doing on Neowin. Not you, for that matter.

;)

OS X 10.7 is looking better than previous versions, even to the extent of tempting me closer to confirming my decision of getting a Mac as my next computer.

Damnit Apple, why do you sell your stuff so well...

I agree, I like the "muted" look myself, too. I've generally preferred flatter, simplistic looks to windows and widgets as opposed to shinier, more glossy looks. In fact, I still prefer square windows to rounded corners, especially seeing that Mac OS X is the only OS I've seen that makes rounded corners look good. (They're just too pixelated on Windows and Linux.)

That's the power of very effective marketing. It's not just you... There are lot of people, myself, who just want everything Apple makes.

Okay, with that I totally agree. (Y) I officially withdraw my earlier statement! ;)

Honestly, if the App Store is their way of transitioning OS X into a closed app environment, I'm out.

It's one distribution channel. Apple will never close down OS X, nor do they have any reason to. They know that would be too drastic.

I'm hoping they make a some major change to the OS rather than copying features from other Apple products onto the new flagship OS. I'm hoping for some serious customization overhauls allowing us to change the colors of menus and such.

Keep dreaming. Apple doesn't like to foster the UI customization scene.

Exactly. If Apple is so intent on getting more and more "switchers," how are they going to spin it? Leave Windows behind where you can run any software you want to a closed OS where you are only allowed to install what we've deemed acceptable? Apple closing down Mac OS X and only allowing new software to be installed via an App Store would very well mean the death of the Mac OS.

Not to mention the App Store would never allow for utilities like Cocktail and CandyBar, since Apple has deemed them unacceptable.

Did you watch the Keynote? The App Store will be an easier way for developers to distribute their apps, but not the only way. Life will still go on the same way, BUT the App Store will come in.

Life will still go on the same way, BUT the App Store will come in.

Then life isn't going the same way, now is it? :p Maybe we can all go into group therapy after Mac OS X Lion is released. So we can learn how to deal with the changes and try to get our lives on the road again. Get some group discount as well. ;)

The Mac App Store makes total sense. 50% of the Macs sold this past quarter were to first-time Mac owners, a lot of them interested in a Mac having used an iPhone or iPad. One of the first things (if not the first) people do when they open up their new iOS device is hit the App Store and download an array of games and apps.

Why not have that experience on OS X?

    • The current Statcoungter desktop numbers has Google Chrome increasing it's market share this past year and currently commanding 75% share. Everybody else is just making up the numbers with even MS Edge losing 3% this past year and has dipped just below 10% share which is staggering considering it's default on every Windows deviced purchased. If these numbers are correct that terrible Edge number is both devastating and embarrassing for MS especially when you add in the terribly low Bing market share. This leads me to ask a couple of questions as the default browser holding just less than 10% market share seems really weird. It used to be that all Chromium browsers were being counted as Google Chrome in some cases.  Is this still happening? Do these high Google Chrome numbers contains some Edge user numbers?
    • Yeah, all web browsers seem to have some junk in them these days. The regular Brave browser has a lot of unnecessary stuff in it, similar to Microsoft Edge, so I don't see any benefits of using Brave over Microsoft Edge if you already have Microsoft Edge fully set up with adblockers and that. The cleanest or best free browser outside of 'Microsoft Edge' I’ve tried so far is 'Opera Air'. It still has some bloat, but nowhere near as much as Brave browser, for example. I also really like the web browser called 'Floorp' that is based on Firefox. I have a system wide Adblocking program for Windows 11 that doesn't just blocks ads in the the web browser, but over the whole thing. I don't really need a web browser with an inbuilt adblocker because of that.
    • I have been using Firefox for years.
    • I'd trust open source stuff on github more then closed source binaries from Microsoft.
