Nintendo ended the production of the Wii gaming console in October 2013 seven years after its maiden launch to give way to the Wii U. Now, it seems the company is also planning to pull the plug on all video streaming services supported on the legacy hardware.
In an email to customers, Netflix has sent the following message:
"Unfortunately, Nintendo will suspend all video streaming services on Wii—including the Netflix Channel—after January 31, 2019.
"We hope you’ll soon enjoy an even better Netflix experience with additional features on a supported device. Please visit netflix.com/wii for our device list."
It is, perhaps, worth pointing out that the upcoming change won't affect the streaming services on the Wii U. It's not clear where the Netflix app is headed after it is discontinued on the Wii, but it's likely that the streaming service could arrive on the Nintendo Switch soon especially after YouTube was launched on the console yesterday.
Earlier last year, Reggie Fils-Aime, head of Nintendo in America, confirmed the imminent launch of Hulu and Netflix on the Switch. In November 2017, Hulu became available on the console.
The end of video streaming support on the Wii makes sense after Nintendo announced in September of last year that it would close the Wii Shop channel by the end of January 2019.
