Sea of Thieves has sold over one million copies on Steam

When 2020 was just beginning, the Rare-developed pirate adventure game, Sea of Thieves, celebrated having over 10 million players across Windows 10, Xbox One, and Xbox Game Pass. Today, Rare executive producer Joe Neate revealed that the number has now crossed the 15 million mark, and a chunk of the new arrivals had been from Steam.

The Sea of Thieves Steam release happened in early June, and over a million copies have already been sold on the platform according to Rare. June had been the most active month ever for the growing title as well, seeing over 3.3 million players log in to get some pirate action.

The most recent content update to the live service game, Haunted Shores, delivered ghost ships as a new threat and new shanties among other features. The July content update doesn't have a release date attached to it yet, but a recent teaser revealed that it will introduce a new special skull that essentially functions as a flamethrower. Moreover, custom servers were confirmed recently as an upcoming feature, with Sea of Thieves Insiders gaining access to test them out first.

"On behalf of all of us at Rare, I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who’s ever played Sea of Thieves for helping to get us this far," added Neate as he closed out today's developer update. "It’s a game that we love making, and there’s plenty more to come. See you on the seas."

Future adventures that are incoming to Sea of Thieves may also get revealed during the Xbox first-party games showcase that's happening on July 23.
