Did you play The Witcher 2 when it first came out vs what it is now? Not only does it run better but they added so much content to the game for free.

so you reiterate my point. there should be wonderful upgrades to PC version available in the new EE release!... or there be riots!

Think some people really need to cut them some slack.

The Witcher 3 has had a large overhaul on scope. It's truly open world now, unlike the others that were boxed off areas of exploration. They set their targets really high, and yes videos from 2013 will be gameplay but remember it'll be a tiny slice of gameplay that has been well prepared. Not as if back in 2013 you could ride the horse all over the map and do all the quests. Quite clearly to create the game this size with those graphics was either far too expensive, or in a related way, it couldn't have gone to consoles so less sales = less money to cover the expenses. Yay it would be fun to see this studio burn their bank accounts to the ground, amirte? :/

Losing good faith and everything else I'm reading? Bit of a *rolleyes* from me there considering how decent CDProject Red are at treating gamers, and even went above and beyond with that little card they put in all the game cases. That's in a world where we either get no game manuals from the big boys, or a black and white one-sided piece of toilet paper with the controls printed on them.

yeah, so, this is what i am expecting for them to do for witcher 3, and they better deliver.

what's your point?

My point is you said pc players were losing faith when there is no reason for that to happen.

The only people who have that issue are ones like you with unrealistic expectations.

Being upset that we got the version we got instead of the one from 2013 is just mind blowing to me.

just mind blowing to me.

don't forget to use Fire-Extinguisher!

tations.

i know, right?   you would think having 2 extra years, you would look for a ways to improve it, not parity it down to console's level mediocrity...

I'm sure if the small snippet of the game they showed in 2013 would have remained to be the full game it would have been massively improved on all formats. Fact is, the developer changed the entire game premise and added a little more to it, so sacrifices had to be made.

I'm sure the awesome PC's will get ini files to tweak to get better graphics and all will be well with the world.

I'm still trying to work out when graphics became more important than gameplay.

The moment PR more important than actually shutting up and doing your job.

I don't agree - I'm enjoying the game and I'm sure many thousands of people are too. It has nothing to do with PR, that has ALWAYS been there, only now it's easier to see for the world. The problem is people over hyping games.

Me too. I honestly don't get the complaints. It's especially odd since some of the people making the complaints can't even run the game at max settings as it is now.

Some people just want another Crysis. They think that running a game at 15 FPS is a good indication of quality.

Think some people really need to cut them some slack.

Of all game developers to get some flak, CD Projekt RED deserves it the least. They released a game without DRM and free DLC (16 planned in total, 2 of which has been released so far). I'm getting really tired of the "But da downgradez r reallllllll!111!!" comments. I'm actually very happy with the performance I'm getting in The Witcher 3 with just one Radeon R9 280X.

Apparently a patch came out on the pc today that is supposed to be improve performance by a little bit. It's also supposed to improve Geralts responsiveness when using a keyboard.

Here are the notes:

  • Improves stability in gameplay and the UI
  • Improves performance especially in cutscenes and gameplay
  • Fixes grass and foliage popping that could occur after density parameters were changed
  • Improves Nvidia Hairworks performance
  • Boosted texture anisotropy sampling to 16x on Ultra preset
  • Sharpen Post-process settings extended from Off/On to Off/Low/High
  • Blood particles will now properly appear after killing enemies on the water
  • Corrects a bug where player was able to shoot bolts at friendly NPCs
  • Improves menu handling
  • Corrects an issue with Stamina regeneration while sprinting
  • Fixes a cursor lock issue that sometimes occurred when scrolling the map
  • Generally improves world map focus
  • Improves input responsiveness when using keyboard
  • Corrects some missing translations in the UI
  • Corrects an issue in dialogue selections
  • Rostan Muggs is back
  • Minor SFX improvements

It's about a 300mb download.

Some impressions so far:

 - Last time I played a 3rd-person single-character RPG was Dark Souls. In comparison, The Witcher 3's controls feel unresponsive and inaccurate, but character movement is much more realistic for it. Dodging is far less effective and it seems like at times you have no choice but to take some blows - I found the fight against the griffin sometimes frustrating because of that, especially given that there's no way of quickly regenerating your health. And that was on the "normal" (i.e. one step above easy) difficulty level. (For the record I fought the griffin at level 2 with very little prior experience of games in this series).

 - Of course the dialogue and quests have more to do with Baldur's Gate than Dark Souls. In that regard, so far every quest feels very unique and well-developed which makes exploration very motivating. However, the game really holds your hand with extremely detailed steps and instructions, with quests markers on your map and clear visual indication of what you need to interact with next through the "Witcher Senses" mechanic. Which sometimes feel almost like I'm a dumb interpreter executing some script and getting visually rewarded for accurately following instructions. Hopefully quests get a bit more challenging and/or free-form later on.

 - Compared to games where you choose to play whatever character you like and everything has to be very generic to accomodate that (i.e. Bethesda RPGs), The Witcher 3 takes full advantage of the fact that you're a specific person with unique skills and this fundamentally defines gameplay mechanics and quest contents. Very well done, results in great immersion.

 - Graphics: some plants look bad, but it only stands out because everything else is so realistic and natural. Lifelike details abound, in architecture, clothing, trees, weather effects, etc. In particular, very convincing wind effects like I've never seen in a video game before. Unlike many RPGs that aim to evoke some generic feelings of wonder and awe (did I mention Bethesda RPGs), this game simply feels like a real world that has many places of interest and secrets.

Frustrated that you can fail quests. Frustrated that you must go to a fast travel point in order to travel quickly and you cannot do it from anywhere. Would be nice to travel to an area without having to go to the designated spots.

And the horse is stupid. You call the horse and most of the time, it appears a little ways away from you and doesnt come up to you quickly, or gets stuck. Or sometimes, it just does not appear. And of course, glitched quests that you cannot complete. Hopefully there is a fix for this.

Playing it for a few hours,

Geralt always talks to Roach when I travel. I fear this will get annoying.

Got my ass handed back from the start. So far playable on max difficulty though. Exploding barrels help. Angry winged bird dude for tomorrow.

Smooth on 970 - granted I disabled movie effects and VSYNC and hair.

I love it.

Picked random places to explore when I had no quest that match my level.

Found some bad ass castle. Picked up cool gear.

Would have being killed. But I run and hide... Run and hide.

Now I have super cool gear... Way above my level.

Life is good. Lol

run and hide?

Witchers don't run, they roll and attack, roll and attack and just when you think its all hopeless and you're barely doing any damage you stop drop and roll some more.

What castle you talking about?

What castle you talking about?

Think it's the one near the route to Novigrad. You get a loot hunt for armor schematics which leads you there if you don't find it first by exploring.

Game may well be my GoTY, and that's beating Bloodborne! Really fantastic RPG. So many interesting characters as well as cool monsters/ties to real world lore.

Staggering amount of content as well. Makes Dragon Age seem like a poor shell of MMO fetch quests. Don't get me wrong this is fetch quests hidden behind the scenes as well, but all from voice acted NPCs with interesting stories.

yeah this one.   though a castle might be a bit of exxageration.  more like a keep ;)

Yeah, it's tiny lol. I'm catching up on the main quest now, overlevelled a little doing side missions and witcher contracts. Your choices from Witcher 2 do matter, met a character on a quest you have a choice to let live or kill in the 2nd, whilst doing a side quest.

if the enemy is much higher level, it will take forever, and if there are more then one,  it better to go around them

i noticed the A.I. is pretty weird.    twice i found an invisible border the enemies will not cross, so you can roll in, hit them and roll away, and even though nothing is between you, they will just wait there, without approaching you.

(normal difficulty)

What, go around them, go around them?  This isn't DAI, what you suggest is madness!

Now if you will excuse me I have to go load a save game for the 10th time, this higher level beast will fall or I shall roll trying.

2 things i don't like:

Falling damage is way too high.
Equipment degrades really fast.
(why did they even add this, just waste of time having to make sure i have repair kits)

    • Linux 7.1 arrives with an NTFS overhaul and major hardware performance boosts by Paul Hill The founder of the Linux kernel has just announced the availability of Linux 7.1. This is a stable version of the kernel that will now be tested by various Linux distributions before it is shipped to users through update managers. Some users, like those on Debian, for example, might not get it for a long time, if at all, while Fedora users can expect it in the near future. With Linux 7.1 out on time, the merge window for Linux 7.2 is now open, giving contributors the opportunity to send in major new features that have been waiting for the last two months. Torvalds warned that he is currently travelling and will be in another timezone, so timing for the merge window may be irregular due to timezone differences and limited internet access. Torvalds said that he has already fetched early pull requests to allow him to do some offline work, but the travel could still cause disruption. Right now, he is not planning to extend the release, but did consider it. He said he might later regret not extending, though. In terms of this last week of development for Linux 7.1, Torvalds said there were no major or alarming changes. This week consisted mostly of smaller driver updates to GPU, networking, and sound, networking fixes, trace tooling fixes, and misc minor fixes. The shortlog this week lists fixes for driver bugs, memory leaks, I/O and USB fixes, networking and RDMA fixes, DRM/graphics fixes, and tooling and verification improvements. Specific fixes include USB series heap-overflow and buffer overflow fixes, and multiple use-after-free, memory-leak, and refcount corrections across subsystems such as i2c, zram, gpio, and net. There are fixes for graphics drivers, including amdgpu, i915, and virtio, as well as hypervisor and virtualization tweaks affecting mshv, vmbus, and hyperv. According to Phoronix, anyone running Linux 7.1 should look out for the new NTFS driver, Intel FRED for improved performance on Panther Lake and future CPUs, faster graphics with Intel Arc Battlemage, and improvements for older AMD Radeon GPUs. If you are running Linux on your computer and everything is fine, then you don’t need to worry about updating to Linux 7.1 as a priority; just wait for it to be pushed to you. If you have tried Linux on hardware but it didn’t work properly, trying again with a distro that uses Linux 7.1 could cause Linux to work on your machine, thanks to the new hardware support.
