Quite a major update :)

How long has digimezzo been a thing?

Yeah quite some work and time went into this one. It's been an exhausting few weeks. A lot, which is not listen in the changelog as it concerns the internals, has changed under the hood: semantic zoom, indexing, update check, refresh after search, filling of lists. I should pause a bit after that build, but knowing myself I'll probably just dive into the next features :).  Digimezzo is new. The next build will be the first to be hosted over there. My blog will be phased out after some time.

Only 64 I'm afraid, I could spin up a 32 bit VM if you had a specific test ?

He is asking because he is getting ready to provide a native x64 version of Dopamine, it currently is x32.

I built it for x64 for the first time yesterday. The results are mixed:

- everything seems to work :)

- no performance gain :(
- 2,5x more memory usage :(

I looked up the memory usage thing: actually it is not using all this memory, but .NET reserves these pages (it went above 400 MB yesterday). When built for x64, it has access to more pages and thus reserves more.

- The good news: as soon as another application needs that reserved memory, it is freed by windows.

- The bad news: lots of people will freak out when they open task manager.

Also, I don't want to maintain a 32 and 64 bit version. That's time that I'd rather spend writing the application. That means I might leave 32 bit people in the cold if going 64 bit.

Conclusion: for now it remains 32 bits. And I'll think a bit more about it.

Can you compile both 32 and 64 in app and the installation will detect then install the right version based on user's OS? (or user choose at the installation for that matter)

Or you can compile 32bit then next day 64bit ....   you can update either of those whenever you can.  You don't have to leave 32 bit app out.

I can stay 32 bit for stability. Once  64 bit gets stability down the road, then I will replace it.  Or I could use both ... for example, 32 bit on this one and 64 bit on other laptop..   something like that.

Up to you.

I'm in the mood of testing a new 32 bit preview tonight! :) or 64 bit

Not tonight :) I'm not ready. This is the changelog, it got some extra fixes :)

- Dopamine is now a single process application. This reduces Windows Smartscreen notifications from 3 to 1 for the portable version.
- Migrated everything to www.digimezzo.com
- Improved user interface responsiveness and transitions
- Albums lists are much more performant
- Added Z-A sorting for songs
- Songs on disconnected disks are not removed from the collection anymore
- Indexing percent is replaced by number of files and total files indexed
- Song progress can be changed also when the song is paused
- It's possible to choose between 3 cover sizes for all album lists
- Slightly lower CPU usage when main window is visible
- Added WASAPI Exclusive Mode support

I'll now try to fix stuff and finalize and test what have. Otherwise this one will never get out the door :)

I would be more than happy to test a 64-bit version.

You wouldn't mind the massive amount of RAM usage? :D

I've made a Danish translation of Dopamine - available from here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/43tx78ktu2oegro/DA.xml?dl=0

Thanks for your continuing work on Dopamine.

Thanks! Downloaded and added to Dopamine!

    • Along with that and very unfortunate for Linux, the AI boom/tariffs/global supply chain instability really destroyed any chances of it getting a decent chunk of market share. By all accounts, if a Steam Deck was still available for $399 (with tons of alternatives releasing at $500-$800 - instead of $1500+ now) and the Steam Machine was out there for $499, I think a lot of people WOULD have been willing to try SteamOS and switch away from Windows. But yeah, with the crazy jacked up prices now, people have to make safe bets with their money.
    • Neowin hasn't been covering the Ladybird browser but it has been posted about on a lot of tech and Linux/open source sites. I have been following the effort myself for almost a year now. Cloudflare and Proton are among their sponsors. You can read the why here--> https://ladybird.org/#about
    • That's really the user's problem, not the developers. It's not like the Windows 10 EOL was a surprise. Once a product goes out of support, you have to understand YOU are owning the risk of running it - the rest of the world will move on, maybe you'll be OK, maybe you'll be OK for a while, maybe you'll have an issue.... But you can't expect devs to write or certify software for dead operating systems.
    • Not mentioned in this blog post is that Linux has now dropped for 2 months in a row. At a hight of 5.33% in March, then 4.52% in April and now 3.99% in May. I suspect the end of Windows 10 got a bunch of people to try Linux, fueled by all the Microsoft hate, and rabid social media push of that....and now they are going back to Windows 11 because of the normal Linux issues. The vast majority of PC gamers want to use their computers to game and not trouble shoot why a game wont work, or half work.
