They've got a max population cap, as well as a object cap. And with the local leader perk and the supply lines you setup, they share food/water (So the Abernathy farm is super useful, etc.)

They also periodically generate caps/purified water and junk, which is really helpful.

Caps and water get added to inventory of where do you pick them up?  Lots of stuff to know in FO4

I'm on my 12th character and STILL haven't seen Diamond City yet. Just having too much fun trying different build ideas and roaming the world.

I made a character build thread, but it's not going anywhere. Everyone lives in the game, apparently. hehe

They end up in the settlement inventory, walk up to any workbench and bring up the inventory and you'll find it in there (e.g. Sanctuary generates flares and purified water for me, etc.)

Edit: You need shops to generate caps, and it's based on the settlement population. And a surplus of water to generate purified water. As for junk, settlements passively generate it, but you can build a scavenging station (and assign somebody to it) to increase production.

Cool.  Thanks,  I got my supply runs going and got a beacon at each location to help with getting settlers.  What is odd is when I go in to the menu, I have a caution triangle at some of my settlements for defense/food and other stuff when I meet the requirements.  So not sure what is going on there.

I'm on pc and the experience has generally been quite smooth apart from a few random crashes and the fps drops everyone seems to be having in specific areas. Something strange going on with shadows and it's pretty inconsistent. More complex scenes will be just fine and then you can look at the ground and get massive fps drops.

As for amd I can't really say. I haven't heard of any issues there but that doesn't mean there aren't any.

I'm playing on PS4.  After Skyrim and the absolutely atrocious UI for PCs (I can't even play the game without the SkyUI mod) and the tons more bugs (even had to use a hack to support more than 2GB of RAM until they finally patched it) I decided I'm better off just playing on console since that's what they seem to design the games for now anyway.  I know it looks better on PC (higher res, fps, etc.) but it works fine on my PS4 and the UI actually fits the controller.  The fact that mods are supposed to come to console (eventually) also helped push me in that direction.

I finished the main story without completing some other quests that I wanted to do. So I want to go back, but I don't want to lose my current main save.

I feel if I load an older one it will wipe the newest one? (on PC)

So I am about 25 hours in, here is my summary,

Fallout 4 seems to follow Bethesda's problem with games. Weak almost nonexistent storytelling with heavy emphasis on meaningless exploration and killing of things. I am not sure what Bethesda did with Obsidian (New Vegas) writers but that is the primary thing that is missing from FO4. What will happen is I will invest another 60 or so hours in the game and then feel empty inside (just like with FO3 and Skyrim).

Look in "My Games" in your documents folder and backup the fallout 4 folder. That's where the saves are stored on the standalone version at least. just backup that folder. There used to be a 3rd party profiles app for fallout 3/New Vegas but it doesn't appear that anyone's got around to doing that with fallout 4 yet.

Why do you keep buying their games then?  I don't think they have any intention of improving their storytelling, it's just not their thing.  Obsidian (New Vegas) is a completely different company that just licensed their engine/setting (it happens to be made up of people who made Fallout 1 and 2).  People who DO like their games typically like them specifically because of the exploration and killing things you consider meaningless and couldn't care less about the storytelling.  I count myself in that group as a HATE linear stories. I've bought all of the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games (all the way back to Arena) and despite spending 100's of hours each in them Skyrim was the first I ever even bothered to do the main story for.  Typically I just start the game and go off in the world they created for me and do my own thing.  I totally realize that not everyone likes that and absolutely understand that many people like to have a strong story to follow along with but that has never been what Bethesda Game Studios games have been about and considering they sell quite well without it I don't see any reason they'd suddenly start spending a great deal of effort on it now.  I don't know why you thought Fallout 4 would suddenly be different but here's a tip, Elder Scrolls VI will almost certainly have weak nonexistant storytelling with heavy emphasis on "meaningless" exploration and killing of things so if that's no your thing you might want to skip that one.

if you make more than one character then you should see an option to switch between them on the load screen at the bottom, each character should have its own set of saves. :)

Something happened after Morrowind at Bethesda considering Morrowind was dialogue heavy and the main quest was rewarding. Perhaps Morrowind was simply an exception - I did not play anything earlier.

The issue is that I will enjoy Fallout 4 for another ~60 hours but I would not be able to recommend it after that.

The only mods that are going to be able to come to consoles are simple re-textures. They won't be able to have the more complex overhauls or even balance patches people will be making once GECK is out. 

It's great that consoles are going to get mods but I wouldn't hope for anything amazing.

New Vegas had great writing, but that was really about it. It wasn't any better or worse than Fallout 3 glitch wise (With the usual post release "Bethesda sucks!" stuff, I've seen people claim that New Vegas has "proper ironsights", the ironsights in NV are pretty much broken, Obsidian implemented them and never tuned them, so they're wrong on half the weapons. Seems they only look good through rose tinted glasses)

Edit: Regardless of the merits of the story, or how it's presented, or engine issues, or graphics, etc. I've sunk over 20 hours into this game so far and I want to keep playing, no other game in the last couple of years has hooked me this much, so (Y) from me.

Been looking at ways to make money.  Searches I have read said to create water purification plants and then just sell the water.  Thats all well and good, but I keep the water for healing when I am out and about. Stimpaks are expensive and anything else gives you radiation.  Plus stuff like stag meat has a higher sell value that purified water.

Oh, and if my companion steps out in front of me one more time when I toss a grenade of molotov....I am going to shoot my TV.

Get the cap collector perk and sell all the crap you pick up and then the scrounger perk for caps. Easy as that. Especially useful if taken early in the game. 

As for the companions, I think currently Lone Wanderer is the way to go. Their AI is just so incredibly bad and none of their perks seem all that useful outside of maybe Curie and 1 or 2 others. It'd be nice if Dogmeat didn't count as a companion, though.

Something did happen after Morrowind.  I'll agree with you that Morrowind was by far the best Elder Scrolls game ever.  What happened is it sold well on consoles.  Ever since then Bethesda has been dumbing down the Elder Scrolls games more and more... less RPG more FPS... less need to read text more voice... etc.  I mean seriously, look at the dialog system in Fallout 4.  It's even more diluted than even Fallout 3 or Skyrim.  The skills are gone and they brag about how the gunplay is based on Destiny.  I still love the games but their depth is DECREASING from game to game not increasing so I don't know why you'd expect them to suddenly start writing better stories.  There is always hope but they have to be TRYING to improve something and I just don't think writing better stories is one of their goals.  At least I've never seen any signs of them even trying to improve the storytelling, it's just not their thing.  I think Todd Howard subscribed to the John Carmack school of thought when he said:

"Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."

We'll see what happens, the worst case I'll just buy Fallout 4 Game of the Year edition with all the DLCs/Expansions included for cheap on PC in a couple years or so but in the meantime I'm not having any issues at all playing it on PS4 as the UI is clearly designed for consoles.  I think it would annoy the crap out of me with the simple controller based UI to play keyboard+mouse on PC (just as Skyrim does without SkyUI... it's only gotten worse as I understand it.)

The UI is fine on pc. It's easy to navigate. People who are complaining about it are just being overly nit picky for whatever reason.

Edit: I don't see the issues with the UI, it's the same as Fallout 3/NV, except now you can loot containers without using the full screen trade interface

You can craft Stimpaks at the chemistry station (Just needs blood packs, antiseptic and steel) and Radaway at the cooking station.

I've got way too much purified water, it's actually weighing me down, I had to transfer 75% of what I was carrying to a workshop just to get below 200 weight.

There is still no mod that fixes the terrible user interface. There doesn't seem to be a good mods at the moment for making VATS more accurate (without crashes) and rebalancing the game so that enemies are not bullet sponges (without bugs and unrealism) - exact same issues exist and were fixed by mods in 3 and NV.
