10:26am PDT - ?Now, let?s go to the big topic: Transitions.?

10:27am PDT - 1994-1996 Moto 68K -> PowerPC. ?I wasn?t hear then, but from everything I hear the team did a great job.? 2001-2003: OS9 - OS X.

10:28am PDT - ?It?s time for a third transition. And yes, (puts up slide that says): It?s true.? Next slide is one word: ?Why??

10:29am PDT - ?I stood up two years ago and promised this (3.0G PowerMac), and we haven?t been able to deliver.? Steve says it?s bigger than that, though. No roadmap for the future based on PowerPC - they can?t see a future.

10:30am PDT - Intel offers not just increased performance, but reduced power consumption. Transition will be complete by WWDC ?07.

Dude, I'm known far and wide as a harsh Apple critic. But this is quite possibly the smartest move they've made in a long time.

Jobs hasn't said yet if there will be an OS X for "regular" PCs. It may very well be hardware locked to Apple's systems (Although I'm certain someone will work around it).

But either way, this is a smart move.

10:31 AM: The Intel Processor switch transition will be long term, with most of the product line in the Intel based chips, June 2007. Steve notes that the Marklar rumors that have been circulating for years are true, that the last five versions of Mac OS X has been compiled for both the PPC and Intel based chips.

Holy ****, as absurd as the rumour was I can't believe it's true. This is major! I think it's the best move for Apple by far, but it's a massive, massive gamble!

Mac OS X has been leading secret double life. Every Mac project build for Intel and PowerPC and Intel. Every release of Mac OS X has been built for both Intel and PowerPC-based Macs. For the last 5 years. Mac OS X is cross-platform by design. Apple's demo is on an Intel-based system. Jobs shows all Mac OS X Tiger features are already compatible with Intel-based processors. Not done yet. Will put into the developer hands to help Apple finish it.

NOES, it happened before the announcement! :omg: But why x86, isn't there a more efficient processor that Intel makes?

Now when is microsoft making Windows for PowerPCs :x

I think Microsoft has already made PowerPC versions of Windows:unsure:: Remember that the XBOX360 OS is going to run on a PowerPC and I am guessing that it is a version of Windows (i.e. Windows XP Embedded PowerPC Edition?).

So when will I be able to buy an x86 copy of Mac OS X?

      +1 for Rufus. I bought NTLite a few years ago to scrape all the bloat out of Windows 11. It is not a perfect solution as there is a steep learning curve if you don't really know what you are doing (me included). I have finally got a Windows install that just works. I only keep things I use and nothing else.

      Personally ive been using searxng, self hosted, although there are public instances out there too (https://searx.space).  Its shocking when I occasionally go into google or bing and see how bad they've become in the last year
