Found something interesting. If you add "microsoft.com" to the array list, you can create an account with @microsoft.com. I just did! However, if you try to use the mail portion, you get this message:

Live.com cannot currently access your Windows Live Mail or Hotmail inbox. If your inbox is hosted by Windows Live Mail or Hotmail, click here to reauthenticate. Don't have a Windows Live Mail account? Find out how to join the beta.

I even tried 'bill.gates' with '@microsoft.com' and was told that that name is not available... :p

Here is the simple explanation why @microsoft.com and other forged domains will never work:

When you sign up with that form you are signing up for a passport.net account. If you have registered a passport account your mailbox will not work, so if you log onto mail.live.com it detects your passport login, if this passport happens to be one of the mail.live.com enabled domains it will create a new mailbox for you.

If you register a @microsoft.com account, it will figure you are a microsoft employee and allready have got a normal mailbox (pop3, imap, internal system) attached to it, and sends out a verification mail to activate your passport account, it does exactly the same if you are registering a gmail account for use with messenger.

By the way, you need to activate your mailbox after registering by logging in to mail.live.com, otherwise you only have a passport account and you cant receive mail.

So.. stop wasting your time with this, and stop being a ass with all those "funny" attempts that probably will make Microsoft close the site.

basically, you can sign up with any custom domains, bare in mind it will ONLY work if the mx servers r hosted by windows live/microsoft. if you sign up for a gmail, it won't be of any use as gmail's email service are hosted by google.

It used to be, but I don't think you can now, sadly. I haven't been able to use it with my account.

I am comfortably using @live.com ID with Windows Live Desktop app ( cool version like OE) and hope it doesnt break. Microsoft .. keep it alive :) *prays*.
