MVC's, the ones we missed

I think it's clear not everyone can be pleased, no matter what. I understand some of your points Tom but others seem just taken out of the wild, for example the subscriber only forum. Those people pay an extra, not obligatory, so Neowin gives them something extra back. I don't even the think that extra forum really makes us, non-subscribers, miss out on something.

The problem is, you don't know. Black box and all that. Might as well been complaining about you going on in there.

In the subscriber forum? With all due respect, I couldn't care less. There will always be people who hate me, who love me and the people in between. It doesn't bother me. I would like to be a subscriber but I'm waiting until they give us, people who live in the EU, the ability to pay via wire transfer since I don't have paypal. Either way, I'm not subscribing in order to have a fancy badge, a fancy forum or any other fance stuff but I'm subscribing to help out a community I've been part of for over 4 years (with some breaks).

If you mean the staff forum they will be probably talking about me and I know they have done so in the past. Once again, I couldn't care less. If there is something I did wrong I'll either see my warning level increase or receive a PM telling me to watch out. I don't need to know what's going on behind the scenes unless I'm part of it.

You could easily compare that with buying a plasma. You don't need to know what people do behind the scenes in order for you to get that plasma tv. The only thing you need is your tv and that's the most important thing in the end.

I'm aware Neowin has changed in it's policies, staff members, subscribers and normal members and it is different from 2004 but that's normal. As a community grows, a community changes.

@hasan: You could probably be missing out on something, something subscribers are talking about. However, you won't miss out on anything you came for. You'll still get your answers on your questions, you'll still find your daily news. The subscriber area is just something else, something extra. That's it.

Good god. If you want to see what's going on in the subcriber forum, it is real easy. I've been there, and there really isn't anything secret. Just another subforum. No secret handshakes and discussion of which other members are paranoid about being talked about.

The MVC isn't hard to get into, either. Post well, help others, share knowledge. Even a few people who have made some waves and ruffled some feathers have gotten selected as MVC. Again, if you are curious about the content in there, it isn't much to see. Yet another subforum.

Finally, your reply also was in regard to the staff forums. I've been there, too. Guess what? They talk about forum issues. Work on identifying IP addresses of porn spammers. Make sure all staff is working together on the issues, so that one staffer isn't doing one thing and another doing the opposite. It is just coordination.

And, yes, all staffers (with the possible exception of Admins) are just members here. I was recruited into staff a few years ago. I wasn't imported from outside Neowin to help move threads to the correct sections. To edit out personal attacks and offensive language. Here's the kicker - I was minding my own business, just helping out people (primarily in the Linux section) and was asked if I would volunteer to help out.

If you want to imagine a caste system, go ahead. But it certainly seems you have a big chip on your shoulder about this.

I'm not going to pay money for a peek. You didn't need to, from what I know, unless you're telling me mods have to pay to moderate the forum.

And anyway, did you notice that I used conditionals in my post? As I said, it's a blackbox and anything COULD go on in there.

Well, excuse me if I don't buy that only "job" related stuff goes on in the mod/admin section. Or that moderators are being objective. No human is objective, even less so when dealing about or judging over humans. Seen enough mods going rogue on various forums and basically disproving any assurances by the staff that everything's going on correctly. There may be a difference in severity, since Neowin isn't drama 4chan, but that's about it.

If what you said was the case, there's surely no reason why the decision making forums couldn't be transparent, could they? Like this, people also get more insight into why someone has been dealt with a certain way or why something's been decided to be that way. But obviously, no forum ever does this for apparent reasons.

If you want to imagine a caste system, go ahead. But it certainly seems you have a big chip on your shoulder about this.

I couldn't care less if there's actually a caste system or not, because if there is, there's no way this is going to change. I'm just stating my opinion on how I see things.

actually Rappy should get one because i think he has been around for quite some time !

As for me id like a black badge with the logo of a lady's boobies citing me as the Official Neowin Sex Guru

Or the dude who has to bring sex into almost every topic he gets into ;)

As I said before, people with views like that clearly missed the point.

MVCs are still regular members, it's just that our efforts have been recognised. We don't have any higher powers or privileges.

Not true. MVC's get more than just the badge of signifigance.

They also get: Enhanced forum permissions, no flood control, larger PM storage, a Blog and a dedicated MVC forum.

Basically the same as the Subscribers. And most of us were already subscribers anyways before we got switched into the new group.

I thought only staff and current MVCs can nominate other members, but if it's worth anything I think Rappy deserves the badge. He's been a wonderful contributor to The Media Room.

    • Sennheiser's audiophile grade HD 600 hits lowest ever price on Amazon Prime Day 2026 by Sayan Sen If you are in the market for high-quality audiophile-grade over-ear headphones then Sennheiser's HD 600 are a great choice for sure, especially today on Prime Day 2026 as the product has hit its lowest ever price (purchase link under the specs table down below). The Sennheiser HD 600 has long been regarded as a reference headphone for listeners seeking a detailed and natural listening experience. It is an open-back design that is built around the idea of acoustic transparency which is essentially said to allow sound waves to move freely for a more spacious and accurate presentation by reducing turbulence and the type of distortion that can result from it. At the heart of the product is Sennheiser’s proprietary driver system featuring a 42 mm driver paired with a lightweight diaphragm and aluminum voice coils. The company says this design helps deliver fast response times and better articulate sound across the audible frequency range. Comfort and durability are also key aspects of the HD 600 as the headphones feature soft velour ear pads designed for extended listening sessions. The HD 600 comes with a detachable 3-meter cable, a 6.3 mm stereo connector, and a 3.5 mm adapter for compatibility with a wide range of audio equipment. The technical specs of the Sennheiser HD 600 are given in the table below: Specification Value Transducer Principle Dynamic, Open-Back Ear Coupling Circumaural (Over-Ear) Frequency Response 12 Hz – 40,500 Hz Sound Pressure Level (SPL) 97 dB (1 V) Impedance 300 Ω Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) < 0.1% (1 kHz, 1 V) Cable Length 3 m (9.8 ft) Connector 3.5 mm Stereo Jack Plug Included Adapter 6.3 mm (1/4") Stereo Jack Adapter Weight 260 g Magnetic Field Strength 1.8 mT Driver Size 42 mm Dynamic Driver Diaphragm Size 38 mm Get it at the link below: Sennheiser HD 600: $237.00 (Sold by Electronics Expo, Shipped by Amazon US) (Was: $449.95) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified. • So the card is targeted at headphone users - so the review should be from someone that uses this - maybe I can review a card next time.
    • I have a older F4-210 NAS, it is pretty basic, the CPU is not the fastest by a long way and only 1GB of ram, but it works fine. I don't understand the need for A.I in a NAS. It seems like A.i is being shoved into everything, if we like it or not. i will stick to my old Terramsater NAS, thankfully the OS is not being updated. Also, got myself a small NAs built using a Raspberry Pi 5. iy usesd less energy, so stays on all the time. As for the unit above, if it is as reliable as my old Terramaster Nas, then it will be a good unit.
