Windows 7 Build 7100 RC (Changes/Bugs/Tweaks) Discussion

Recommended Posts

i have read that you cant upgrade from beta to rc .. then why can you on build 7100 from what i have noticed ??

Most of the leaks seem to have modified that cversion.ini that holds the earliest build you can upgrade from, by default its 7100.....from what I have it has been modified to allow upgrading from earlier versions (something MS themselves explain how to do, but they suggest not doing it).

So in short, these builds are supposedly the official RC builds, but (from what I read at least) the cversion.ini has already been modified so you can upgrade if you want.

(Again, this is just what I've read, my DL has not finished so I cannot confirm it)

Is it faster?

Is it smaller - after full install?

I am aching to write an extensive performance and GUI functionality comparison between XP and 7, but other versions of 7 were rather slow. Has the CPU drain on the start menu been fixed (That thing that spikes up the CPU to 50% when poking around in Start Menu - MP3 files I think )?

ty

If you're going to write a comparison (why we need yet another I'm not sure) then perhaps it would be a good idea to actually use it yourself, not that comparing XP with a unrealsed product really means anything.

7100 = RC

7100 = newer than previous builds

Everyone is spreading fud that 1) 7100 isn't RC, and 2) 7100 is older than 7106, which it isn't.

Paul Thurrot shouldn't be classed as a reliable source, he has caused some of the recent headaches that say that Windows 7 is getting a new UI when it just isn't.

He's an awful lot more reliable than people like you who only think they know best. You obviously didn't read that MS had an important announcement re Windows 7 which could still be UI or theme related.

ill be disappointed if the Released RC HAS THE BETA **** WALL!!! :(

Microsoft is doing well for the code i knw... but they are a little bak in the graphics department...

there are many small UI flaws..

Yeah because the wallpaper is SO important and SO hard to change, grow up.

Any word on if 3rd party codecs work in the RC?

Nobody ever said 3rd party codecs didn't work. WMP was just avoiding using external codecs if in-house codecs were around so everyone would enjoy hassle-free movie viewing.

I have RC installed. Don't notice really any difference over the last leaked build. Ya its RC, but nothing to get TOO excited about, as 7077 ran just as good as RC has so far for me.

Same for me

Microsoft might be making an important announcement, but like people are pointing out (common sense) it'll most likely be a release date for Windows 7. A UI update is a bit late in the development, especially if Microsoft want to convince people than Windows 7 is coming out this year. It's RC, and like Brandon Live has even said, it's practically finished. It's just time to get rid of all the bugs before it gets released.

I never dismissed the fact that an updated theme might come into play, but like I keep saying, it's a bit late, and like Paul Thurrot said on his website about the 7100 release, from all the builds being a little different from each other, that much points out that Microsoft are happy with the way Windows 7 is. We've seen RC escrow builds with no UI difference or any clue of a new theme (only small changes like icons or Superbar effects), and we are seeing pre-RTM based builds which look the same as well.

Microsoft need to test anything they change, if they want to iron out problems, they don't want to spring new features/themes, because they need user input and that takes time.

taking off the ''ei.cfg'' file in ISO you can install any version of 7: starter, basic, premium, professional and ultimate.

Can anybody confirm this is true ????????????????????

Knock it off, there is no need for the caps, and yes, it's true, but your keys won't work. Grow up.

thanks, I agree with you about Paul.

Has anybody here gone from 7000 to 7100 either from an upgrade or a fresh install? If so, is it worth it? It seems like there's more bugs with every build (Of course this is the bug forums) But are there any major changes? I know of the UI changes but in terms of performance how much faster is 7100 over 7000?

I've not installed it, but there are enough bug fixes and a few UI changes in previous builds that should make you install it.
Guys tried to upgrade from 7106 to 7100 -no go- cannot upgrade to older version/7106 is the more recent version. Darn :o

If Microsoft could, they'd slap you, and any other person trying to upgrade from a beta/pre-rc to the current RC, that's why you can't upgrade (unless you trick the setup to think it can). Microsoft have stated that they want real testers to do upgrades from Vista to Windows 7 to give them a better bug reporting conditions rather than people upgrading from a bugged beta and messing something up, then crying to Microsoft about it.

By upgrading from one build to another, you hurt the development because you are effectively creating a new set of bugs which don't actually apply to what Microsoft is trying to achieve.

Also again, to clarify, 7106 is older, but the reason the setup won't allow the upgrade is because of the above reason, and that's what Microsoft have done themselves, and not a bug.

here u go..

look at the media player buttons.. and the image viewer ones..

i remeber the media player had same style.. but they updated it in build 7022.. rite now im on 57 and the image viewer button still isnt fixed...

There is nothing wrong with the button. You don't need to have a play button in an image viewer.

And yes.. im the kinda guy who looked at the graphics of a game before gameplay :p

im the eyecandy lover...

i just want the UI to be perfect.. if it was easy to modify the theme i wouldve made the button myself and replaced :p

but its not possible

Your opinion of perfect doesn't necessarily tally with everyone elses. Microsoft are here to please the masses, not just 1 user but if the buttons bother you that much, just find what library or executable they are in, and reshack your own "perfect" ones in.

U are rite..

I am..

BTW I LOVE WINDOWS 7..

it flys on my stupid slow system..

Vista was death for my computer..

And If u are rite..

then im sorry but why do ppl say RC is like COMPLETE.. just some bugs there..

when there is a big flaw ..

BTW.. Isnt there anyone who has install it already??

The RC is feature complete, and UI complete, the only usual changes after RC stage are icon updates, and small tweaks. And for the record, a button that isn't to your taste is not a very big flaw, it is just a personal opinion coming from you, that you personally don't like it. Evidently not many other users can be making much of an issue out of it if it isn't being changed. And for the record, can you please post in english, reading pages full of abbreviations like u and r just gives me a headache.

1-copy the content of the 7 iso to usb stick .

2-change the boot order to boot from usb

3- done

4-profit!

that has worked for me before,

Doesn't always work, some bioses won't boot from USB if there isn't a boot sector on the device

Get an iMac then

Don't troll Windows threads with this rubbish. If you want to talk about how wonderful macs are, go post in a mac thread, or head off to somewhere like macrumours and join the rest of the Windows bashers.

So can WMP use third party codecs in 7100?

WMP has always been able to use third party codecs, Windows just prevents the replacement of in-house codecs.

Yes it is, there is nothing more than having a sexy wallpaper and having some random text in the bottom right hand corner to ruin it. Microsoft could actually make it worse by making it change to random different colours. :p

Desktop customization is useless anyway. You are just wasting time if you are looking to your desktop. But then again, just use a light wallpaper.

What I don't like about Paul and his site is that he goes on that he needs to go-ahead from Microsoft to post an extensive review, but he then goes on to say that if your a risk taker, you can download the builds from torrent sites. It's kind of a double standard. Microsoft don't want these builds being leaked, but it's okay for him to encourage people to get the torrents but it's not okay for him to post Microsoft secrets or wait for the go-ahead for him to post a review? Really, if he was any credibility, he wouldn't be saying anything, much less actually encouraging people to go and torrent the leak.

I believe he's talking about the style of the buttons, notice the lighter blue colour and slightly refined design.

Why would anyone suggest having a Play button in Photo Viewer?

Wrong

Play a slideshow? haha! only jokin! ;)

I downloaded it and installed it (x64 version), but have just one problem -- Windows Update/Microsoft Update which is built-in to Windows 7 will NOT update Office 2007 for me. It shows that the only eligible Microsoft products to update is Windows.

I never had this problem before with the previous betas of Windows 7 x64. Now I can't even get any program/security updates for Office 2007 (genuine copy of the Home/Student version).

And this is a clean install.

It's not about "Windows" not supporting it, it's about the list of transforms that WMP prefers being locked and inaccessible to third parties. These are not DirectShow filters and any DS filters for the same types will be ignored regardless of their configured merit. The Microsoft quote in your link even pretty much confirms it by saying that third party applications can use whatever they want. WMP is however not a third party application, it's a Windows component.

Presumably it's done so they can guarantee a level of functionality in WMP, not to be mean.

Do i clean install, Office 2007 updates work.

    • NASA: This asteroid may not kill us but it probably won't be far off either by Sayan Sen Image by Zelch Csaba via Pexels New observations by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope have eliminated the last remaining impact threat posed by asteroid 2024 YR4, ruling out the possibility that the near-Earth object could strike the Moon in December 2032. NASA said observations collected by Webb on February 18 and 26, 2026, enabled scientists to refine the asteroid's orbit enough to "rule out a chance of lunar impact on Dec. 22, 2032." Instead, asteroid 2024 YR4 is now expected to pass the Moon at a distance of about 13,200 miles (21,200 km). The agency stressed that the update "reflects improved precision in our understanding of where the asteroid is expected to be in 2032 rather than a shift in its orbital path." The announcement closes a remarkable chapter in planetary defence that began in late 2024, when the approximately 60-metre-wide asteroid briefly became the most closely watched near-Earth object in the world. Discovered on December 27, 2024, by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, 2024 YR4 initially appeared to have a small chance of colliding with Earth on December 22, 2032. As astronomers gathered more observations, the impact probability briefly climbed to around 3%—the highest ever recorded for an asteroid of its size—before steadily falling as its orbit became better understood. By early 2025, international observations had ruled out any significant risk to Earth. However, astronomers were left with another possibility: a roughly 4% chance that the asteroid could instead strike the Moon. "The probability that asteroid 2024 YR4 will strike the Moon on 22 December 2032 is now approximately 4%," the European Space Agency (ESA) had said last year, noting that "there is a 96% chance that the asteroid will not impact the Moon." ESA said such an impact, while unlikely, would have presented an extraordinary scientific opportunity. "It is a very rare event for an asteroid this large to impact the Moon – and it is rarer still that we know about it in advance. The impact would likely be visible from Earth, and so scientists will be very excited by the prospect of observing and analysing it," said Richard Moissl, Head of ESA's Planetary Defence Office. "It would certainly leave a new crater on the surface. However, we wouldn't be able to accurately predict in advance how much material would be thrown into space, or whether any would reach Earth," he added. The asteroid also exposed an important blind spot in planetary defence. Because 2024 YR4 approached Earth from the direction of the Sun, it remained hidden from ground-based telescopes until after its closest approach. "We looked into how Neomir would have performed in this situation, and the simulations surprised even us," Moissl said. "Neomir would have detected asteroid 2024 YR4 about a month earlier than ground-based telescopes did. This would have given astronomers more time to study the asteroid's trajectory and allowed them to much sooner rule out any chance of Earth impact in 2032." He added, "As an infrared telescope, like Webb, Neomir would have also immediately given us a much better estimate for the asteroid's size, which is very important for assessing the significance of the hazard." The latest NASA observations underscore the value of space-based infrared telescopes in tracking faint asteroids. According to NASA, Webb made "among the faintest ever observations of an asteroid," extending the object's observational record by nearly eight months at a time when it had become too faint for other telescopes. That additional data allowed scientists to eliminate the remaining uncertainty surrounding its 2032 flyby. Although asteroid 2024 YR4 is now confirmed to pose no threat to either Earth or the Moon, scientists say its discovery remains one of the most significant real-world tests of the international planetary defence system, demonstrating how continued observations can rapidly transform an object once considered hazardous into one whose future path is known with high confidence. • Yup. Google is just scraping the entire internet for their own ad profits without sharing revenue with the sources. It's obviously stealing, but since these sites depend upon Google's search scraps to survive... As for me, I just stopped using Google for anything except Reddit searches. If Reddit's own search wasn't complete crapola, I'd never use Google search again.
