Windows 7 Build 7100 RC (Changes/Bugs/Tweaks) Discussion

Recommended Posts

I'll try it out when I have a bit of spare time. I just hope that playing .mpg files in WMP doesn't cause the screen to flicker violently and that unplugging my X360 controller doesn't result in a bluescreen. It would also be nice if minimising Firefox didn't cause Windows Live Messenger to pop-up.

Windows 7 is shaping up well but there are some real annoyances with the new interface now that I've used it for several months. You can click a taskbar icon to restore / minimise as normal but when there is more than one window that no longer works. It takes more clicks to navigate between applications with multiple windows open. When playing a video in a window I'll often flick my mouse to move the cursor out of the way and onto the "Show desktop" button, causing the desktop and window outlines to appear. Closing a resized window causes all Explorer windows to change size on open - with Vista if you resized the My Documents window and closed it then it would memorise the size for that location only and wouldn't affect the My Computer window.

Overall I like the new look of Windows 7 and the removal of text on the taskbar but it means many tasks are a lot less convenient. Unfortunately there is no way to keep the text-less icons without grouping. It's possible to go back to the old way of handling applications but then you end up with the taskbar filled just like before. The interface changes are more of a sidestep than actual progress, unlike the new interface introduced for Office 2007 (where some tasks take slightly longer but most are dramatically more convenient).

I find this functionality extrememly inconvnient as well.

I suppose turning grouping off would change that then. It's great how customizable the taskbar is in Win7 now.

If you do that then all the pinned applications are no longer fixed and move around as more windows are opened up. In fact, the whole concept of the "superbar" is not that dfferent to the old default grouping of items when taskbar filled up with one difference being the thumbnails. I am starting to get disillusioned by windows 7 as I try new builds and come to realise that nothing new will come. From what I have seen so far, windows 7 doesn't add that much over the vista experience (at least for me). About the only thing that impressed me so far is the inclusion of many additional codecs as well as the quality of the h.264 codec, particularly in the dxva department.

The active window taskbar button highlight is not as annoying. They didn't eliminate it, but it is somewhat less pronounced. The animation "click" that I and others have noticed when opening/closing a window is improved, much smoother on my machine.

That's great news, might install 7100 now and see how that performs on my end. Was on of the most annoying things for me.

7100 is the release candidate build. There will be no other build released as Microsoft has already started pressing out actual media with 7100 on it for TAP members and partners.

As for Paul Thurrott, does anyone really think he'd post so many screenshots and an article about 7100 being the RC if it weren't true? I mean really... what a major pooch screw that would be to find out in a few days "Ooops, sorry Paul, you'll need to redo your website because we (meaning us, Microsoft) decided to drop a bomb on people and psych 'em out and release a new build which is the official RC build... sorry..."

Ain't happening, kids. 7100 is the deal, as noted many times.

Haven't noticed any bugs, and since it's effectively the same as 7077 in most respects (which is a damned solid build all by itself), I don't expect to find many problems if any.

hmm, some people shouldn't even have windows 7 ;) . 80% of the posts in this topic are off-topic.

But I guess windows 7 rc is rock solid. I don't understand why people complain about the stupid minor ui glitches instead of focusing their attention on more serious stuff. So what if it has a betta wallpaper. It doesn't look bad and it's a wallpaper! You can change it anytime you wish. Microsoft can't make everyone happy. This build is probably more stable than vista when it reached rtm.

And seriously, most people here are exaggerating about the ui. It's not bad. It works well, the superbar is really nice and it does help a lot. What more do you want? You can change the appearance completly. So far nothing interesting here.

One other thing about WMP 12. Still, when you click on a control in Now Playing mode, the window LOSES the focus. I don't think anyone has mentioned this anywhere. Anyone noticed this? No biggie, though. As for the UI, I think it more pleasing overall than Vista.

Folder views for search.ms folders are still buggered, if you have more than one search folder open the first search will show the correct view but the second will reset to default, that is the content view.

I downloaded it and installed it (x64 version), but have just one problem -- Windows Update/Microsoft Update which is built-in to Windows 7 will NOT update Office 2007 for me. It shows that the only eligible Microsoft products to update is Windows.

I never had this problem before with the previous betas of Windows 7 x64. Now I can't even get any program/security updates for Office 2007 (genuine copy of the Home/Student version).

And this is a clean install.

Works ok here

It seems Paul is convinced that there still will be a UI change coming:

"[...] Windows 7 RC is a very-close-to-final look at what Microsoft plans for the final release (barring any UI coming change, of course), [...]"

Lol, interesting to see how this plays out.

The new feature I'm most surprised about is Windows XP Mode for Windows 7

I can't believe people still expect to find major visual changes then complain that only bug fixes have been made.

When are people going to get it into their heads that no major visual chances will be appear and it's mostly about fixing bugs and tweaking the UI here and there with minor changes.

Get over it already.

Not exactly sure where, in any post before yours, anyone said anything about major visual changes. Maybe you should be a bit patient before launching into a many rant about people's expectations.

Anyone have an Auzentech Prelude 7.1 soundcard, and has gotten it to work in Windows 7?

If so, how?

Also, do we need to download Intel chipset installation utility and intel matrix storage drivers for us intel chipset users?

They only have vista ones on intels site.

Sorry if someone answered this already but I didn't see anything regarding this post.

I have that soundcard and you just simply install it using the drivers Auzentech gives you. If i remember correctly, Windows 7 will ask you if you want to install the drivers or not due to incompatibilities, or something along the lines; maybe not even incompatibilities but something popped up. Just say yes and you're good to go.

As with the Intel chipset drivers, I'm not too sure.

On another note. Does anyone know if they added an icon shortcut overlay for shared folders on a network? I currently have 7077 and I think this feature has been gone since 7068 or so.

Any way to keep UAC on, but not have it pop up on every bootup saying "Do you want to allow EVEREST to run?"

Annoying....

Are you running an old version of Everest with a non UAC compatible monitoring driver?

    • AltSendme 0.4.1 by Razvan Serea AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform application designed for fast, secure, and private peer-to-peer file transfers. It allows users to send files or entire directories directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, accounts, or any personal information. Everything is encrypted end-to-end using modern protocols like QUIC and TLS 1.3, ensuring both strong security and low-latency performance. Transfers are verified with BLAKE3 for data integrity, and interrupted downloads automatically resume, making the experience reliable even on unstable connections. You can transfer anything—images, videos, documents, and more. Integrity checks are performed on both ends, so your files are automatically verified for correctness during both sending and receiving. AltSendme works seamlessly across local networks or long-distance links, capable of saturating multi-gigabit connections for extremely fast delivery. With built-in NAT traversal and encrypted relay fallback, it connects devices almost anywhere. The app integrates with the Sendme CLI and will soon support mobile and web platforms. Fully free and open-source, AltSendme offers a lightweight, privacy-first alternative to traditional cloud-based services, removing size limits, upload costs, and unnecessary data exposure. AltSendme 0.4.1 changelog: Release Highlights Self-hosted relays: Run your own iroh relay so transfers don't rely on public infrastructure. Includes a full deployment template in deploy/relay/ with Docker Compose for a VPS and configuration examples for production use. Fly.io support: One-click deploy template for Fly.io, including a quick-start config (fly.dev.toml) for testing without a custom domain, plus production setup with Let's Encrypt and your own hostname. Relay settings UI: New Settings → Network panel to choose how AltSendme connects: automatic public relays, custom self-hosted URLs (with optional auth token), or disabled. Test connections, verify latency, and see live relay status in the footer. Disable relays: Turn off relay servers entirely when you only need same-network transfers (e.g. LAN). Direct connections only. No relay hop required when devices can reach each other. Android graduates from beta: Android is now part of the regular release cycle alongside desktop. APKs ship with each version (universal, arm64, and armv7). • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
    • OK so SearXNG is a meta search engine that you can install locally or use via a public instance. It scrapes other search engines which you choose and then sorts the results. Not as complicated as multiple relays
