Halo Infinite multiplayer may be free-to-play and support 120FPS on the Xbox Series X [UPDATE: Confirmed]

Although 343 Industries finally showed off the Halo Infinite campaign recently during the Xbox Games Showcase, details regarding the multiplayer have been scarce. Before any official details come through though, a leak may have revealed a large aspect of the head to head portion, where it could arrive as a free-to-play experience, a first for the series.

The leak arrives from Smyths Toys' Xbox Series X pre-order registrations page, with the Irish toys and entertainment products seller describing Halo Infinite - which will launch alongside the console - as having "a groundbreaking free-to-play multiplayer experience." Check out the screenshot below in case the wording is altered in the future.

If the multiplayer does arrive without a price tag, it's unclear if Xbox Live Gold will be required to join in on the action, much like current generation free-to-play titles. However, there are some signs that suggest Xbox Live Gold is also heading out the door, or is being changed in some form. Halo Infinite is described as being a platform that will last the next 10 years, and a free-to-play multiplayer experience could certainly help with that.

The description also mentions the game offering up to 120 FPS gameplay on the Xbox Series X. So far, 343 Industries has said it is targeting 4K 60FPS for the campaign portion, so this could be a feature that's only available on the multiplayer side, perhaps with a lowered resolution target.

Halo Infinite multiplayer is probably what 343 Industries is planning to show off next, so take this leak with a pinch of salt until some official announcements shed light on the matter. Moreover, the studio said today that it is listening to feedback regarding the recent Halo Infinite campaign demo's graphics shortcomings.

UPDATE: Microsoft has now confirmed that Halo Infinite multiplayer will be free-to-play, and that the Xbox Series X will support running the experience at 120FPS. Unfortunately, other than confirming the leaked information, nothing else regarding the highly-anticipated multiplayer portion was shared, with 343 Industries only promising more details for later.
