I have no idea what builds they are looking at (ok, I do have a guess but seriously doubt that they are getting access to those builds). I have only seen one icon, it was the trash can, and it was the exact same.

Wouldn't, and maybe it's just me, icons be the last thing they change?  One would think that this early (a tech preview in my mind is just a fancy way of saying alpha or beta 1 at best), they'd be busy getting the new features/changes to work right before they think about the final UI looks.  We would probably get those, if they do any, in the public preview, if they do one like the last few times.

i hope I'm terribly wrong, hey I would like a refresh look as much as you guys, but from a consistent GUI perspective Windows is a mess and I don't believe in it being ever fixed no more.

 

They have awesome Developers for code, but for GUI it seems no one there cares ...

The bold part is exactly why Microsoft is in this mess. They just don't get it. (Probably they will never get it and keep wondering why they are constantly falling in an endless ditch when it comes to public perception)

The developers who do the coding can NEVER have a say in UI design. Microsoft should create a separate department for maintaining consistency in looks of GUI.

It will be fixed at some point, the Modern UI part of the OS is already consistent, and I've got good hope that they will revamp the desktop completly.

 

Anyway, some fresh rumors came in from WZOR:

 

• RTM will be signed off by the end of 2014.
• The Windows Technical Preview will be signed off somewhere in the first half of september, leak after September 15th is likely
• Windows TP builds will be given out to partners in early September

I know people say the icons are not all that important, but when you pin let's say, the registry editor to the Start Screen it looks hideous.

I'm curious, is Threshold just a way to push out build updates to Windows easier? Like once you get Threshold, your system will continuously upgrade to new Threshold builds, and around May the Threshold builds will become Windows 9 stable builds? Perhaps opt into a technical channel to upgrade to pre-release builds similar to Windows Phone?

CTPs, or TPs (Consumer technical previews/tech previews) are nothing new, I don't remember for Vista but maybe back then they still went with the old beta 1/2/3 tags, but with Windows 7 they started calling them previews.   Windows 7 had a early CTP, then a PP (public preview) and then it finally RTMd iirc.   The same with Windows 8 unless my memory is faulty.  Now this sounds the same with threshold to me, a tech preview, mostly for OEMs and developers comes first, then later the public will get it's preview then 2-3 months later they'll go RTM.

That's not what I didn't understand. Supposedly Threshold might not be Windows 9. I'm inquiring if Threshold comes this year, will it be just an upgradable build to build OS leading into Windows 9 builds eventually? In case the rumor that the two aren't the same.

We'll have to wait and see what they release, if anything, on September 30th.  The upgrade from build to build feature sounds interesting but even without that, if you got a technology preview of this, it should be upgradable to a newer build later on without the need to reinstall the whole thing.  I believe that's going to be the norm going forward, while in the past some times you've had to uninstall a preview and then install the final RTM version since they weren't upgradable. 

 

I still think threshold is going to turn out to be Windows 9 (for desktop/laptop x86 hardware).  What I'm not sure about is what they do when they have Windows Phone and "Windows" for tablets without a desktop which could/should be the same OS actually.  The Windows RT name is dead now, so they'll have to find something else and I doubt very highly that they'll just call it "Windows".   Heck we have Windows Phone for the Phone so maybe Windows Tablet or Touch for tablet/touch first devices?  Who knows what they're thinking at this point.

New Metro rumors for Threshold: :D  :D  :D

 

WinBeta.org, using unnamed sources, repeats previous rumors that desktop users of Threshold, which may or may not be released with the name Windows 9, will get a version of the Start menu that could be turned into something that looks like Windows 8's Start screen if the owner wants that experience. However, WinBeta claims that the desktop will be going away completely for certain devices that won't need it, such as touchscreen tablets that might demand a full Modern UI experience. If this is accurate, it will be interesting to see what the reaction will be from long time Windows users.

 

The same report also claims that the Modern UI in Threshold will have interactive live tiles, which is something that Microsoft Research was working on just a few months ago. WinBeta.org's story does say that the interactivity in Threshold won't be as "feature rich" as the one seen in the Microsoft Research effort.

 

A notification center and live folders may also be put into Threshold, according to the story, and it adds there will be more customization features for the Start screen.

ok, I'm liking the start button and as a result generally Windows 9. As I've mentioned before, they can build something for everyone to love. call me old fashioned but I like the way I work on the desktop.

Just to clarify, is this upcoming release an alpha build, like Windows 8 started out as? If yes, these features might come later.

- AFAIK, these are wp features and not planned for win client.

- You would know when MS talks officially on win9, else you could read about Project Threshold in corpnet(if your friend would show you). :)

It's a M2, from what I heard TP is not for public release, there would be a DP(probably with a different name), :)

I'm betting they're a good bit into the 983x builds, should be newer ones than 9830 already but then I don't know how much time they're going to take on the tech preview build to make sure it doesn't have any big bugs in it before they release it on the 30th.   Is it going to be  1 week before? 2 weeks?  Guess we'll have to wait and see what build we finally get.
