The Official NDS Homebrew Thread

Wow. Cool to see it finally stickied. I'd also like to thank everyone who has contributed. Especially since I stopped updating it. It's really cool that you all have kept it going. I should really update the first post. It's pretty dated. Maybe I'll to that on my next day off.

Hey,

Ordered a DS Lite + R4, will DS Organize run on it?

Thanks.

I forgot to mention something. You should be aware of the fact that DS Organize (even the latest version) has a tendency to corrupt files and directories. Often requiring one to format their TF card. Use with caution and always have a current backup of your card on hand.

Anyone else using R4DS? I just got one for like ?20 and it works great! I'm looking for some decent skins... anyone know of any?

BTW, I haven't had time to mess around with it yet, but what is the last icon for on the main menu (I think this applies to both R4DS and M3 Simply devices aswell), I think it says Boot slot 2 or something? Is this for the GBA slot?

Most homebrew runs on the R4 to be honest, I haven't come across anything I use that needs a Slot-2 card yet, you just need to do something called a DLDI patch to the nds files sometimes. You do need a slot 2 for GBA games though if you're talking about backup images, I don't have a slot 2 though so someone else is best answering where to get one from.

I have an R4DS but what would be the best slot-2 device to run alongside my R4? And where could I buy one in the UK? I've heard good things about the M3 Lite... would that work with the R4DS? I'm not too knowledgeable about this DS homebrew business, but the R4DS works as a passme device?

I have an original DS btw.

The whole problem with the R4/M3 DS Simply was just temporary. Both cards came out at the end of 2006, and most of the homebrew hadn't been updated to this new DLDI system. Now most of them are updated, and the only one's that no longer function are the programs that were discontinued/no longer updated.

As for the limitations of Slot-1 solutions, the only real issues is a lack of GBA rom support. Also, discontinued GBA homebrew obviously wouldn't work with a DS card.

Well... thanks. I hope the author will fix it soon. It looks promising :)

I don't know what cart you are using, but someone posted a version of 0.3e over at GBAtemp. It worked on my R4 after I DLDI patched it.

    • Yeah, this is absolutely nothing new and EA have done it before. Burnout Paradise, released in 2008, had dynamic advertising billboards that were updated via the internet and targeted people based on location and what EA knew about them from their profile. It was particularly notable for the fact that the Obama presidential campaign ran ads in the game, in an attempt to reach a younger audience who didn't watch broadcast TV any more. It was by no means the first though. Battlefield 2142 from 2006 had the same thing. In fact, Neowin wrote a story about it back then. https://www.neowin.net/news/ba...-in-game-ads-clarification/
    • This is obviously aimed at the education where Apple has lost so much ground to Chromebooks in the last few years, but unless they come up with a comparable management system for education why would anyone switch back?
    • Here's how we arrived at that claim: Note that this is just Play Store downloads. The app is also available on the Galaxy App Store
    • Google Play states the app had more than 50 million downloads. What other metric do you suggest should be used?
    • MSN defined our generation in some ways, kind of like Snapchat and TikTok have done for future generations. I have great memories of the MSN era in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the UK everyone seemed to come home from School and go on MSN for the evening. We didn't really have mobile phones then, so other than going and knocking on your friends door it was a totally new way of interacting with people. I also loved how I could talk to people I’d met playing online games from around the world. Inviting people to NetMeeting and messing about with the shared white board and webcams was pretty fun, even if webcams only ran at a couple of fps over dial-up. All the random things you could do with MsgPlus! were really fun - I suspect that made a few people jump with /shello randomly blasting Mr Hankey out their speakers! Maybe I’m just nostalgic, however I do feel the internet and computers were more fun back then.
