PS3 Media Server

This mite be a daft question but can someone tell me how i get this to be a start up application. I cant see any otions for that.

Thanks

Matthew

You can either just drop it into the Startup folder for windows, or there is an option to have it run as a process instead in the background on startup.

Isn't it just PS3 Media Server > General Configuration > Install as a Windows Service. I'm not sure but installing it as a Windows Service would mean it starts up with windows? ( Need someone to confirm )

Haven't done it myself but I believe you're correct (Y)

I've been reading this thread and this app seems to be pretty awesome.

TVersity has a pretty clunky interface and it's lack of "real time" dir update bugs me from time to time. this app is very welcome into my life :-)

oh.. and we can even add custom covers... that's just the icing on the cake :-D

I just installed and man... I'm already loving this.

the fact that it can handle ISO's is pretty amazing, and I love that it can actually use all 4 of my cores when transcoding (TVersity seemed to just stick to one)

oh, btw - is it possible to stream to other devices that support UPnP aside from the PS3?

Unfortunately not with this :(

Developer seems to be building it around everything the PS3 can do which is surprisingly a fair bit (audio/video codec wise). Maybe in the future he'll branch out, but right now there's still a bit of work needed with the program. The conversion from DTS to PCM is still borked, which is why I use MKV2VOB still (it converts to PCM correctly).

Plus, well, it's called "Playstation" Media Server :p

has anyone gotten folder-level thumbnails to work?

I've been reading PMS's forum about this issue... but I still can't get it to work. supposedly you put a file called "folder.jpg" and PMS will use that as the folder's icon, correct?

haha, yeah - I was just curious

They are working on enabling Xbox 360 support but due to some uPnP signature and Microsoft way of doing things there are some issues. But they are getting closer. I have no doubts that it will come. When that happens it will be pretty awesome as it will be one solution for everything.

I hope they name change it if they get 360 support, that would be confusing

I think Shagrath said all the 360 will end up getting is streaming though - It can't do PCM/5.1 audio/DTS [in video containers] and I think it struggles with some HD codecs.

at the end, streaming is all you will get ...

like I said in a previous mail, xbox 360

- does not support mpeg2

- does not support 1080p greater than 20Mbits

- only viable format that can be transcoded with seeking and such is WMV, and wmv encoders + open source, well ...

Some news about the xbox support, as I managed to get the damn machine. I added the following in rev 274:

pictures: JPEG seems OK, even Raws and RSS images feeds (but I think there's no support for PNG/GIF)

music: you have to enable the media library and scan your folders as the xbox does not allow to browse your music folders like

every good dlna client. just tested some mp3s (WAV files are not even supported, i guess i will have to convert in mp3...)

videos: ps3mediaserver's will transcode to the Xbox in WMV8/WMA2 (tested DVD isos and some mkvs). two downsides to this:

- no seeking/fast-fwd at all (but other servers are stuck on this too)

- 2.0 audio only

on a technical side, WMV is the only viable streaming format usable for streaming to an Xbox, as AVIs are not streamable at all

and MP4s are not really better I guess. (besides, I think there's a limit of 4GB in AVI/MP4 indexes, so HD videos would cut

before the end ?)

2.0 audio because there isn't any easy way to use a wmapro 5.1 encoder (and I don't think there will ever be)... a solution would

be to use an external WM9/VC1 + WMApro dedicated Windows encoder but last thing I want is working on that.

Good news is I tested with some 720p (even 1080p, with a bandwidth limit, xbox doesn't handle well very high bitrates) and video

quality is somewhat OK (I wouldn't mind watching some shows on it)

So I guess you have seen how crippled was this machine... then I'd like to keep this "xbox support" as unofficial. Please talk or

report issues about this here (or better, in the forum) * DON'T OPEN ISSUES about XBOX360 *

By the way, PS3 DTS support coming to PMS as well it seems :) [just the other day it was found out how to play DTS directly from the XMB without transcoding to PCM]

by shagrath ? Tue Feb 17, 2009 8:24 am>

well I done the coding yesterday (it was not so hard to figure it out with such hints:pp) and it seems to be ok (I have no dts so hard to tell):pp

I'm now working on the DTS-HD part, to extract just the core and use the same technique

E-AC3 is maybe a possibility too, but now I really need to buy a new receiver:pp

I think I will release a beta in a few days

From what I gather, the PS3 does not support folder icons over the network.

The folder.jpg will just give the same thumbnail to all the files in the folder.

Don't want to start any flame wars, but that's one of the reasons why I never ended up getting a 360 - because MS always make it hard for 3rd party! Always!

PS3 Media Server v1.09 BETA

- Changes / Features : Windows/Linux

Streaming support for DTS / DTS-HD core (DVD ISOs not supported yet)

New Option: unification of Mencoder/tsMuxer engines, including:

. Automatic choice between H264 muxing or transcoding, based on AVC Level / ref frames support by ps3

. Remux on the fly any H264 content from MOV, MP4, and AVI containers (ex: Apple HD Trailers)

. Can be disabled via the #Video Settings# virtual menu if anything goes wrong

- Changes / Features : All Platforms

XBox 360 unofficial support (Pictures/Music/Videos : WMV8/WMA2 transcoding)

Automatic album art download from amazon or discogs

New option for browsing directory by date

Alternate cover art folder and <video>.jpg additional support (along existing <video>.<ext>.cover.jpg)

New translations: Romanian (thanks to Marinescu Alexandru Cezar), Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese (thanks to KK Tong)

Updated translations: Finnish, Greek, Icelandic, Portuguese, Swedish

- Fixes

Reworked RSS parsing (youtube playlists)

Wrong font detection on some systems: subtitles weren't loaded

Fixed tsMuxer crash at the end of file

Modified UPNP discovery [work in progress]

http://mogoo.free.fr/files/pms-setup-windows-1.09beta.exe

I'm skipping some revisions number and heading to the 1.10 cause I think there's some major changes:

a. First the DTS output. I'd be happy to have quick feedbacks because I coded this blindly

b. Then the possibility with the Mencoder engine to have an automatic choice between muxing and transcoding for the same video on XMB, based on AVC specs...

the option is enabled by default, but video will be transcoded nonetheless if there are external subtitles. However, if you want to force internal subtitles, you have to go into the #transcoded# folder (maybe this behavior will change, dunno)

c. I'm also quite happy with the MOV remuxer, even if some H264 streams are not supported by tsMuxer (Those from my own Sanyo camcorder for example, and the Canon 5D Mark II 1080p samples, who are rather impressive, but needs a Quad for transcoding them)

At least the Big Bunny movie and Apple trailers are playing fine ;)

Oh, and I included a new mencoder MT from yesterday's SVN...

so you have many things to test, feedbacks more than welcome :)

PS: Web support (rss feeds, web videos, etc.) is maybe broken with this version

[Warning: DTS + Full Video transcode is not stable right now]

Updated BETA for tonight

New beta rolling in tonight.

1.09 is perfect though - Automatically muxes/transcodes files itself now when you select them. Plus DTS support [works perfect when muxing, as stated above it's only with transcoded files there's apparent issues].

Do I want to select "Keep DTS audio in stream" or "DTS/FLAC -> LPCM Remux" ? DTS in stream moves it down to 2Ch audio while the latter gives me 5.1. Have the PS3 connected to a 7.1 Onkyo receiver. Whatever gives me the best sound :)

"Keep DTS audio in stream"

The only reason it says "2Ch LPCM" on the PS3 is it's a workaround to getting DTS to work. As it stands DTS is NOT supported from the PS3 XMB, only on disc. What PS3MS/MKV2VOB does is patch the DTS in the MKV with PCM headings - This tricks the PS3 into thinking the audio is PCM so it passes it directly to your receiver without trying to decode it itself. Your receiver on the other hand isn't stupid, and knows it's DTS. So you should of been aware of your DTS light going on on your receiver. No transcoding or anything else is involved, it's untouched DTS playing back and it can be done over optical or HDMI, something the second option can't.

DTS to LPCM is transcoding, so it's not recommended any more. It was before the above method was discovered as it was the closest result to getting DTS.

Ah ok. I was only home for a moment last night when I saw that you posted about the update and I basically test ran it really quick. I'll take a look at it when I get home to make sure it worked correctly (with the newer beta).

For those who are using the terrific PS3MS. I made a cover template for the HD ripped movies here: PSD for PS3MS cover

You should have no problem adding your thumbnail images into the framework and exporting as PNG. Your final image should look like this:

3260929543_23e02c05d1_o.png

or you can have it looking like this:

bdcoversample.png

This is how it looks like on PS3:

ps3customart.jpg

awsome! this is great! can we do this without the PS3Media Server? or it can only be done via PS3Media Server! Thanks

In the process of updating my guide to use PS3MS for streaming, and MKV2VOB for if you want playback off an external hard drive, or the internal hard drive of the PS3.

Three quick images just now just to help everyone make sure they have PS3MS setup best with some basic settings.

quick-0.jpg

If you want to use thumbnail generation, tick "Use Mplayer for Video Thumbnails", it's more efficient then the default option.

Also to tidy things up a little, you can tick "Hide transcoding engine names", as with these latest versions there's an option explained later that automatically remuxes/transcoded for you, no need to know names of the engines any more.

Lastly, you can also tick "Hide #Video Settings# Folder" to tidy things up. There's some useful options in it, but if you setup everything on the PC end first, and are just looking for some basic video file playback, you won't need it.

1quick.jpg

If you have a receiver capable of DTS, make sure to tick "Keep DTS audio in stream". It will show up as PCM 2.0 1.5Mbps on your PS3 info bar, but that's just a trick to get DTS playing, you'll see your DTS light on your receiver lit up.

Secondly tick "Remux when audio track is AC3". This will pass through all AC3 audio untouched as the PS3 supports it natively. Even if your video has to be transcoded, if the audio is AC3, it won't be.

Lastly if you don't plan on using subtitles, tick "Definitely disable subtitles". It will make sure nothing gets accidentally transcoded when it only needs remuxed due to embedded subs in your video file container.

2quick.jpg

Tick "Enhanced multicore support for H264 HD content" if you have a dual/quad core - This will speed things up.

Also tick "Switch to tsMuxer when H264 video is PS3 compatible", this is a great option, it basically means everything that doesn't need transcoded won't be, and anything that does will be. It's all done automatically, you just need to select your video file on the XMB.
